Chapter 14
Chapter 14 — 26 Days My Husband Lived In The Attic
“On what basis should I trust you?”
Wei Thao took out another USB from his pocket.
“This is my piece of evidence.”
"Cash flow records Bui Chinh Tac used to bribe people at the inspection center."
He put the USB in my hand.
“If I really have a problem…”
“You just take this to the police.”
“I die as usual.”
I tightened my grip on the USB.
“Have you contacted Giang Han?”
“Contacted since this morning.”
Wei Thao nodded.
“I also gave him the financial evidence.”
“Two lines of evidence combined into one complete investigation.”
“Your reporter friend is very professional.”
“Two hours ago he found the families of the two participants in the fatal trial to cross-reference.”
“He didn't tell me.”
“I told you not to contact me for now.”
“Avoid attracting attention.”
Tran Dien looked at Wei Thao for a long time. Eyes are extremely complicated.
“You talk so much…”
“How do I know which statements are true?”
"I do not know."
Wei Thao answered so frankly that it made people choke.
“But the data is backed up.”
“Your wife keeps my evidence.”
“The reporter also has the complete article in hand.”
“Even if I disappear now…”
“…this can't be stopped anymore.”
He raised his head to look at Tran Dien.
“So now…”
“I can no longer fool you.”
That's the most believable sentence so far. That night, we moved to a very ordinary commercial hotel on the west side of the city. Wei Thao opened the room under his own name.
“If there is investigation…”
He leaned against the reception desk, his voice light.
“The first person to be found will be me.”
“So you two have more time.”
His room is right next to ours. Before leaving, he left a sentence:
“Tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock.”
“The article will be published.”
“Before that…”
“Don't go out.”
The room door closed. Tran Dien carried Tieu Du to take a bath. Then put your baby to sleep on the big bed in the hotel room. Having finished everything, he went to the window, gently pulled the curtain and looked down.
“What are you looking at?”
“See if anyone is there.”
“I locked the door chain.”
Tran Dien let down the curtain, slowly leaned his back against the wall and squatted on the floor.
“I didn't think it would turn out like this.”
“What do you think it will be like?”
“I think I should just quietly disappear.”
“Silently waiting for the data to be made public.”
“And then quietly returned.”
He laughed very softly.
“It's like nothing ever happened.”
“You don't even need to know.”
I looked at him.
“Are you going to hide it from me for the rest of your life?”
“I plan to hide it until I don't need to hide it anymore.”
“So what if something happens?”
I clenched my fists.
“If Wei Tao is really Bui Chinh Tac's man…”
“If you die in the attic…”
“I thought about it.”
Tran Dien's voice is very light.
“There is a letter in the attic.”
“I hid it at the bottom of a pile of old clothes.”
“If one day you disappear…”
“You'll find it when you pack up.”
“What's written in there?”
He bowed his head.
“Where is the data?”
“What happened?”
“Who is behind?”
His voice choked.
“… words left to you and Tieu Du.”
I said nothing. Tran Dien raised his head and looked at me.
“Khuong Mac.”
“Thank you…”
“… for not considering me crazy.”
I laughed softly.
“You almost did.”
“Hiding in the attic for almost a month…”
“That's not what I mean.”
He shook his head.
“I want to thank you…”
“Because already believe Tieu Du.”
“A three and a half year old child said his father was hiding in the attic…”
“Most people will think it's nonsense.”
“At first I thought so too.”
“But I still installed the camera.”
“Because the cookies are missing.”
Tran Dien paused and then burst out laughing. After all this… He still managed to smile.
“Strawberry cake.”
I looked at him.
“Strawberry cake.”
The next afternoon. Two hours and forty minutes. We sat in the hotel room. There are still twenty minutes until Giang Han's article will be published. Nguy Thao sent a message to:
“Everything is normal.”
“There is no movement yet.”
“Be prepared.”
Two hours and fifty-five minutes. I opened the news app where Giang Han worked. Three o'clock exactly. I refresh again. The news at the top of the page has changed.
“Exclusive investigation: Si Nuoc Khang's drug GR-17 is suspected of falsifying large-scale trial data, concealing fatal side effects.”
Author: Giang Han. I clicked on the article. The investigation is very long. Divided into four parts. First part — Research background of GR-17 and the huge commercial value behind it. Part two — Compare details between original data and data submitted to the inspection agency. Including all six cases of severe adverse reactions eliminated… And two deaths.
