Chapter 25
Chapter 25 — A Diary, A Fallen City
My branches... gradually cover every street corner in this city. I became busier, but also fuller and more alive than ever. I no longer need to rely on anyone. With my own hands... I built a career and a life that belongs to me. Lawyer Phuong became a legal advisor for the company. Old Hac is in charge of all security. We became friends… then true companions. Occasionally, three people would gather, drink a few drinks, and chat idly. Recalling the past... it feels like something from another life.
"Honestly, Mr. Hua," Mr. Hac took a sip of wine, shook his head and smiled, "I've been doing this job for many years... I've never seen anyone as 'evil' as you."
I smiled slightly. No objections. If “cruelty”… is the only way to protect myself— then I am willing… to be cruel to the end. Truong Chan Quoc has retired. But he still often visits my shop. Didn't buy flowers, just ordered a cup of tea, sat and watched me busy... all afternoon. He said, looking at me... was like seeing my father in the past. That temperament of not giving up. One day, a man wearing a suit entered the main store. He looks polite and courteous. He said he was the publisher's editor, my book was about to be republished, and wanted to discuss more about the new preface. I looked at him... it felt familiar.
“We… met somewhere before, right?”
He smiled, gently pushing his glasses.
“Your memory is really good.”
“A year ago… on the outskirts of the provincial capital, in that farm house.”
“I was the one who… drove you that day.”
I was stunned. Turns out it was you. The driver was silent... but he was the one who stepped on the accelerator right when I needed it most.
“Are you… also a police officer?”
“Before.” he smiled lightly, "now... consider it as captain Truong's assistant."
“I am Co Vien.”
He held out his hand. I took it. Warm… and steady. That afternoon, we talked a lot. About the book. Back to the flower shop. About the charity fund. And his past. He used to be an excellent economic police officer, but after a mission he was injured... switched to logistics. We realized… we had a lot in common. Having seen the deepest darkness—so appreciate the present light even more. From that day on, he became a regular customer of the shop. Every afternoon, he brings a book with him. Sitting in a small corner, reading quietly, waiting for me to close the door. Then we went to eat a bowl of hot noodles. Or walk by the river... slowly and peacefully. No one said it. But we both understood— something… was quietly sprouting between us. Another beautiful sunny afternoon. I'm pruning newly imported roses. Co Vien walked in. I didn't bring a book today. In his hand... was a small velvet box. He walked in front of me. Get down on one knee. Inside was a ring—simple, yet elegant.
“Hua Tinh,”
He looked at me, his eyes gentle but steady,
“I'm not good at saying beautiful words.”
“Your past, I didn't have time to participate.”
“But your future…”
“I want… to be with you until the end.”
I looked at him. Look at the light in his eyes. I don't need to fight anymore. I can let go of all my defenses—my true happiness. I smiled. Hold out your hand. Under the sunlight, the ring sat neatly on the ring finger, sparkling. Just like my life. Going through the storm— finally seeing the rainbow. The future... is still very long. But this time— I was no longer alone. I will be with the person I love, using my own hands, each brilliant day belongs to us. 🌿 (Full text)
