Chapter 30 — Forest Keeper

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

The day to release Brown back into the forest was set on an early autumn morning, when the persistent rains of summer had completely stopped, giving way to gentle golden sunny days, the sky of Thousand Clouds was incredibly clear, not a single cloud covering the rolling mountain peaks.

The whole Ngan May station eagerly prepared for this important event from early morning. Nguyen and Khue had spent the previous several days choosing the most suitable release location — not right near the station, but in the core forest area where the largest population of white-rumped langurs often lived, an area they had observed during a patrol together long ago, when they first started learning about each other.

"This is the herd that we hope Nau will integrate into," Nguyen said, as the group — Khue, Nguyen, May, along with Mrs. Hoa and Kien who had just come from Sai village to attend this special event — stood in the chosen area, preparing the special transport cage containing Nau.

The baby langur — now no longer a baby, but an almost fully grown individual, its jet-black fur with its characteristic white fringe shining in the morning sunlight — appeared restless in the transport cage, as if sensing something important was about to happen, its dark eyes looking out with a mixture of curiosity and excitement.

Khue knelt down next to the cage, looking at those familiar eyes one last time before the moment of farewell, her heart was filled with a complex emotion - both happiness for completing the rescue mission and nostalgia for a creature who had accompanied her through many ups and downs of life over the past year.

"Hey Brown," she whispered, her voice choked but warm, "today is the day you truly return home. I taught you everything I know, protected you through the most difficult journeys. Now is the time for you to walk with your own feet, your own hands, among the trees where you belong."

She signaled Nguyen, and together they gently opened the cage door. For a moment, Nau stood still, hesitantly looking out at the vast space in front of him - the ancient trees rising high, the sunlight filtering through the leaves creating countless shimmering spots of light, the sound of birds singing, the sound of leaves rustling in the wind, all the familiar sounds and images that his deep instincts had always longed to return to.

Then, in just a moment, Brown jumped out of the cage. The first jumps were a bit hesitant but quickly turned into decisive, confident branch passes, bringing him higher and higher into the trees, immersing himself in the very forest that gave birth to him, the forest that had lost its mother but was now welcoming it back with open arms.

"It did it," May exclaimed, her voice choked with emotion, holding Khue's hand tightly.

From above, the characteristic cry of the langur rang out, not only from Nau but also from afar, in response — perhaps from the same group of langurs he was about to join, as a welcome, a recognition from his own kind. Brown stopped on a high tree branch, turned his head to look down at the group of people standing below for a moment, like a last goodbye, then continued to pass the branch, moving deeper into the forest, gradually disappearing behind the dark green foliage.

Khue stood still, tears rolling down her cheeks, but her lips showed the brightest, happiest smile she had ever had. Nguyen wrapped his arms around her from behind, both looked in the direction where Brown had just disappeared, without saying a word, just letting that sacred moment settle in their hearts.

"We did it," Nguyen whispered in her ear. "From an orphan shivering in the hollow of tree roots, it can now freely fly and jump in its own forest."

"It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," Khue replied, her voice shaking with emotion. "And I think, this is also the most beautiful image to close everything - not with a trial, not with a certificate of merit, but with the very moment a living being returns to freedom, to where it belongs."

Mrs. Hoa, standing next to her, gently wiped her tears, looking at her daughter with proud eyes. "Your father must be smiling somewhere, my child. This is exactly what he has always wanted for this forest — continued life, revival, without end."

The group stood still for a while longer, listening to the rustling sounds of the forest, the singing of birds, the howling of gibbons echoing in the distance, the sounds of a living, breathing forest, continuing its endless cycle of survival, regardless of what humans had done to it, despite the losses and pain that had happened on this land.

Kien, standing next to his mother, held up his phone to record the entire moment, his voice equally emotional. "I will keep this video forever. This is one of the most beautiful moments I have ever witnessed."

"In the future, when telling Nau's story to children in conservation propaganda sessions, this video will be very meaningful," May said, her eyes were still red but the smile on her lips was brighter than ever. "A living proof that with enough patience and enough love, we can bring miracles to these little creatures."

Mr. Chinh, who was also present at the release that day although his steps were much slower than his youth, stood silently looking towards the forest where Nau had just disappeared, his face filled with a serenity that Khue had never seen since the day she started returning with questions about the past. "Looking at this scene, I can truly feel the full meaning of ranger work," he said, his voice warm. "It's not just about preventing evil, it's also about nurturing and protecting life, so it has a chance to continue."

Loc, also present in the group that day, nodded in agreement, his eyes looking far away towards Pu Cai peak. "This is what Mr. Thai always believes in and always pursues. Today, witnessing this scene, I think we have truly fulfilled his will."

On the way back to the station, Khue held Nguyen's hand tightly, walking along the familiar path that she had passed countless times throughout her life - the path her father used to walk, the path she grew up with, the path that had witnessed so many ups and downs, suffering and even her new happiness.

She looked up at the distant peak of Pu Cai, now no longer carrying the ghost of her sad past, but becoming part of a more complete story - the story of a father who sacrificed himself for his love of the forest, of a daughter who continued that path, found the truth, protected what was most important, and now, is building a new future, full of hope, right where it all began.

The afternoon wind blows through the valley of Thousand Clouds, carrying with it the scent of forest soil, leaves, and life that is constantly growing and flourishing. Far away, in the tall trees, Khue thought she could catch a glimpse of the familiar figure of Nau, now completely immersed in the new group of langurs, freely moving between the dark green foliage, an image symbolizing the endless revival of this forest, and of her own life.

Forest keeper, she thought, was not just the title of a profession, but a vow, a mission passed down from generation to generation, from the father who had fallen for it, to the daughter who had stood up to continue, and perhaps, one day, to the next generations as well, as long as the Thousand Cloud Forest, with all its wild beauty and intense life, still existed, still needed people willing to devote their lives to preserving it. keep, protect, and love.

A few weeks later, Khue and Nguyen's simple wedding was held right at the Ngan May station yard, just as they had promised on the grass hill that day. There are no lavish rituals, no lavish parties, just family, friends, and colleagues gathering together under the shade of green bamboo rows, amidst the chirping of birds and the cool breeze blowing from the mountains. Mrs. Hoa, in a simple ao dai, stood next to her daughter, her eyes shining with happiness mixed with pride, her hand cradling a small photo frame of Mr. Nong Van Thai placed solemnly on the family altar temporarily set up in the corner of the yard, as a way for the deceased father to still be present, witnessing his daughter's important moment.

When the two exchanged vows under the witness of everyone, far away, from the forest, the howling of gibbons echoed, mingling with the song of birds, like a blessing from the very forest that had witnessed their entire journey - from the early days full of doubt and suffering, through many hardships and challenges, until today, the day of love, of reunion, and of a new future opening wide ahead.

Standing in the arms of her loved ones, under the endless blue sky of Thousand Clouds, Khue knew that, although the journey ahead still had many unknowns, she was ready to embrace it, with full love, courage, and faith in the values her father had passed down - love for the forest, for life, and for justice, values that will forever be a beacon guiding the way for her, for Nguyen, and for all those who choose to become forest keepers on the land. Thousand Clouds.
