Chapter 24
Chapter 24 — From Collapse to Brilliance: I Don't Need You
One year after Diệu Kỳ woke up in her second life, she stood in front of her old dorm room - where everything began - for the last time before moving to a small apartment near the Dawn Institute, marking a completely new chapter in her life. She looked around the empty room, the neatly packed cardboard boxes, and smiled as she remembered that panicked morning, when she woke up with the memory of a life that had ended unfairly.
The butterfly-shaped rainwater stain on the ceiling was still there, just like the day she first saw it. Diệu Kỳ stood silently looking at it for a long time, a deep peace spread in his heart. She had come a long way since that morning — from a confused girl, scared by the painful memories of her past, to a confident, steadfast woman who had written a completely different story for her life.
She carried the last box out of the room, closed the door, and walked down the dormitory stairs one last time. Outside, Bách Sơn was waiting by the car, leaning against the door, his eyes gently watching her approach.
"Are you done yet?" he asked, taking the box from her hand.
"Done," Diệu Kỳ replied, looking back at the dormitory building one last time before turning away. "I think, it's time to start a new chapter for real."
On the way to the new apartment, the two passed by a small park near the school campus, where rows of phoenix trees were in full bloom, dyeing the whole sky red. Bách Sơn suggested stopping for a moment, saying that he had something important to tell her.
They sat down on a stone bench under the shade of a phoenix tree. The afternoon sunlight filtered through the leaves, scattering shimmering spots of light on the ground. Bách Sơn was silent for a moment, seemingly considering each word, completely different from his usual calmness.
"Diệu Kỳ," he began, his voice holding a rare tremor. "From the first day I met you during the transfer interview, I felt something special about you — not just academic ability, but a depth of soul, a resilience that I had never seen in anyone else." Diệu Kỳ looked at him, her heart beating faster, feeling that something important was about to be said.
"Over the past year, you have accompanied me through many challenges — from the first doubts about the data, to a dangerous plot that almost destroyed both my career and my reputation," Bách Sơn continued. "And through all of that, I realized, my feelings for you have gone beyond the boundaries of a colleague, a mentor. I love you, Diệu Kỳ. Not because you need to be protected, but because of who you are — strong, intelligent, and compassionate, even to those who have hurt you."
Diệu Kỳ felt tears suddenly welling up in the corners of her eyes. This was the moment that she, even though she had a premonition for a long time, still couldn't help but feel extremely emotional when she actually heard those words. She thought about her past life, about a life that ended in loneliness and injustice, with no one by her side when she took her last breath. And now, in this second life, she is sitting here, under the red phoenix tree, listening to a man sincerely express his love for her.
"Bách Sơn," she said, her voice shaking with emotion, "I've also felt this feeling for a long time. I just don't dare to believe that I deserve it, after everything that has happened."
"You deserve more than anyone else," Bách Sơn said, holding her hand, his eyes filled with sincerity. "You proved that, not only through the way you faced adversity, but through the way you chose to forgive, chose to rebuild trust, instead of letting resentment rule your life."
Diệu Kỳ squeezed his hand, tears rolling down her cheeks, but they were tears of happiness, completely different from the tears of pain she had shed in her previous life. "I accept," she said, her voice choked but firm. "I want to build a future with you, a future that is no longer encumbered by any ghosts of the past."
Bách Sơn smiled, pulling her into a warm, gentle hug. The two sat there, under the canopy of the phoenix tree, in the bright afternoon sunlight, enjoying the moment of peace that they both had to go through so many challenges to reach.
Sitting in his arms, Diệu Kỳ looked up at the clear blue sky above the foliage, filled with a deep feeling of gratitude. She thought about the long journey she had gone through — from the panicked morning of waking up amidst the memories of an unjust death, to the bold decision to give up everything to start over, to the months of silently observing, collecting evidence, preparing for a confrontation that she knew would definitely come. She thought about the friends who had betrayed her and then awakened, about the enemies who had been defeated not by force or luck, but by her own wisdom and determination. And she thought about the man holding her in his arms right now, the man who believed in her even when all the initial evidence was against her, the man who stood by her through every storm.
She realized that true happiness is not about going back and perfectly correcting all the mistakes of the past, nor is it about taking revenge on those who have hurt you. True happiness comes from the courage to dare to change, dare to leave what is familiar but toxic, dare to rebuild your life from broken pieces, with your own hands and heart.
"Thank you," she whispered, resting her head on Bách Sơn's shoulder, "for showing me that, sometimes, collapse is not the end, but just the beginning of something more brilliant."
Bách Sơn gently kissed her hair, his voice was warm. "And I thank you, for teaching me that true strength does not lie in never falling, but in always knowing how to stand up, stronger after each fall."
Sunset gradually falls, dyeing the sky a brilliant orange color, reflecting on the crimson poinciana petals falling in the wind. Diệu Kỳ and Bách Sơn sat together, without any more words, simply enjoying each other's presence, amidst an open, bright future waiting ahead.
A few months later, on a crisp autumn morning, Diệu Kỳ stood in front of a new sign hung on the door of her private laboratory at the Dawn Institute — a small research group she was assigned to be in charge of after her outstanding contributions to a biotherapy project. The sign reads simply: "Scientific Ethics and Data Management Research Department — In charge: Tôn Diệu Kỳ." She looked at that sign for a long time, a feeling of pride welling up in her heart.
Nhật Lam, now an official member of her research team, stood beside her, smiling. "Do you remember the first day you told me about taking careful notes? At that time, I didn't expect it to be this important."
"I didn't expect it either," Diệu Kỳ replied, smiling slightly. "But I think, sometimes the smallest habits, if maintained persistently enough, can become the strongest foundation for big things later."
That afternoon, when the gentle autumn sunlight spread across the campus of Dawn Institute, Diệu Kỳ stood leaning against the hallway railing, looking down at the schoolyard where new students were busy getting used to their first learning environment. She thought about the journey she had gone through, about the painful but valuable lessons that both lives had taught her, and about an open future ahead, where she no longer had to live in fear or caution, but was free to build what she truly wanted.
From collapse to brilliance — that is exactly the journey Tôn Diệu Kỳ went through, not thanks to miracles or fate, but thanks to her own courageous choice, from the first moment she decided not to let history repeat itself. And now, standing in the middle of that brilliant sunset, hand in hand with the person she loves, she knows one thing for sure: even without anyone's recognition, even without the need to return to what she lost, she is always good, still worthy of a happy life - because she, and no one else, wrote it herself.
The autumn wind gently shook the left on the trees in the yard, bringing with it the fresh breath of a new beginning. Diệu Kỳ closed the work notebook in her hand, looked up at the wide sky ahead, her heart was at peace as if she had never experienced any storms. She knew that there were still many challenges ahead, like every other journey in life. But this time, she walked not in the fear of someone who had been betrayed, but in the steadfast confidence of someone who had learned to love, trust, and forgive at the right time, in the right place — and most of all, had learned to love herself enough to never let anyone, or anything, ever defeat her again.
