Chapter 29 — Old Street Corner Gold Shop

Updated 22/08/2026 6 min read

The ceremony to hand over the memorial pendant was held on a beautiful Sunday morning, right at Tan Phat gold shop - where forty-five years ago, the story of two families began in a chaotic night, and now, in this same place, that story will be completely closed in a warm, loving atmosphere.

The shop is decorated simply but solemnly, with vases of fresh lotus flowers placed everywhere, the morning sunlight filtering through the window, illuminating each piece of jewelry in the glass cabinet, creating a sparkling, warm scene. Vy, in a light yellow traditional ao dai, stood next to the workbench, where the wooden box containing the pendant was solemnly placed, waiting for the important moment.

There were many guests - Mr. Uong Chi Thanh and his small family that he had just brought back from abroad to witness this meaningful moment, Mr. Ky Thi Doan was personally brought by Khoi, sitting in the most solemn position, lawyer Su Dinh Khang was also present, no longer as a legal representative, but as a friend who has accompanied this story from the most stressful early days. Cam Thuy Duong also stopped by, camera in hand, capturing precious moments for an article that continues the story she told.

Mr. Thinh, in a simple but neat suit, stood next to his daughter, his eyes filled with pride. Thanh Tra, also present as an assistant, stood quietly in a corner, remembering each moment as a valuable lesson about the true meaning of the profession she is pursuing.

Even Pho Anh Dung was invited to come, standing humbly in the back, carrying a basket of flowers to congratulate. He is not the main character in the story, but his presence, representing Hao Kim's side, has its own symbolic meaning - showing that the boundary between tradition and modernity, between small shops and large corporations, does not have to be a front line of confrontation, but can coexist in mutual respect.

The ceremony began at exactly nine o'clock in the morning, when the sunlight was high enough to fully illuminate the shop space through the large glass window. Everyone sat in small rows of chairs temporarily set up in the shop space, their eyes directed towards the worker's table, where Vy was standing, her hands shaking slightly in anticipation of the important moment about to happen.

"Today is a special day," Vy began, her voice shaking slightly with emotion but still maintaining the necessary solemnity. "Not just because we are giving a piece of jewelry, but because we are closing a tumultuous chapter in history, to open a new one, where our two families are no longer strangers bound by a misunderstanding, but friends, close people bonded by understanding and gratitude."

She opened the wooden box, gently took out a sparkling pendant, a golden lotus flower with delicate golden bean lines shining brightly in the morning sunlight. She walked up to Mr. Chi Thanh, both hands embracing and giving.

"Sir, this is a gift that my family wants to send to you, in memory of Mr. Uong Khai Tuong and my grandfather, Khuong Tan Phat — two men whose fate bound them together on a fateful night, but now, through this gift, they will forever be remembered together, in reconciliation and mutual respect."

Mr. Chi Thanh received the pendant with trembling hands, his eyes filled with tears as he looked at every exquisite detail. "So beautiful," he whispered, his voice choked. "More beautiful than anything I could have imagined."

He turned to his family - his wife and two adult children, who witnessed this meaningful moment together - briefly introducing the story behind the gift, his voice filled with emotion as he recounted the journey. His wife, a calm woman, could not hide her emotional tears, holding her husband's hand tightly as a way of sharing happiness.

"I want to say a few words," Mr. Chi Thanh spoke up, turning to everyone present, his voice was steadier even though his emotions were still intact. "Forty-five years ago, my father and mother had to leave their homeland one night in panic, carrying with them the pain of loss and the torment of a debt that had never been resolved. I grew up with that story, carrying it with me as a part of my identity, sometimes turning into resentment without me even realizing it."

He stopped and took a deep breath before continuing. "But thanks to Ms. Vy's family, thanks to their persistent search for the truth, I learned a valuable lesson — that history is always more complicated than what we are told, and that understanding, forgiveness, is always much stronger than resentment. I am grateful to this family, not only for finding the truth, but for helping me find peace in my soul after many years of carrying an invisible burden."

The whole room was silent in deep emotion. Mr. Doan, sitting in the front row, could not hide his tears, gently nodded as if confirming every word Mr. Chi Thanh had just said.

"I want to say one more thing," Mr. Doan spoke up, his voice trembling with age but full of weight. "She lived through that difficult period, witnessed so many families being separated, so many unfinished stories that had no chance to be fully told. Today, witnessing one of those stories finally find a beautiful ending, she feels like part of her life's responsibility has been fulfilled."

Mr. Chi Thanh walked over, knelt down in front of Mr. Doan, held his thin hands, his voice full of respect. "Thank you, for everything. You are the one who has kept this precious memory forty-five years, so that today, the truth can be revealed." Mr. Doan emotionally gently stroked his hair, as if comforting a young grandchild, his gentle eyes filled with love.

The ceremony continued with warm moments, shared stories, laughter mixed with happy tears. Mr. Chi Thanh solemnly put the pendant around his neck, saying that he would keep it as a family heirloom, passing it on to his future descendants, along with the entire meaningful story behind it, as a lesson of forgiveness and understanding.

Before the ceremony ended, Mr. Chi Thanh announced another important decision - he will officially sponsor the jewelry training scholarship fund that Vy is cherishing, and at the same time connect Tan Phat gold shop with a number of overseas cultural organizations interested in preserving traditional Vietnamese crafts.

"This is not the end," he said, looking around at everyone with eyes full of hope, "but a new beginning, where the story of our two families will continue to be written, not with sad pages of history, but with new chapters full of meaning and hope." The sound of applause echoed throughout the small shop, mixed with the warm sunlight filling the space, like a sincere blessing for the open future ahead.

After the formal ceremony, the meeting atmosphere gradually became more intimate and cozy. Everyone gathered together, enjoyed the snacks that Vy and Thanh Tra had prepared early, talked together, and shared small stories about life and future plans. Mr. Chi Thanh's two children, even though they were born and raised abroad, were extremely interested when they heard about the traditional jewelry profession. They even asked Vy for permission to try out the carving tools and experience a little of the atmosphere of their great-grandfather's profession.

"I never thought the craft required such meticulousness," Mr. Chi Thanh's eldest son said, his eyes shining with excitement after trying to practice carving a simple line on a piece of waste copper under Vy's guidance. "I think, if I have the opportunity, I want to learn more about this profession, as a way to connect with my roots."

Those words made Mr. Chi Thanh unable to hide his emotions, looking at his son with proud eyes. Vy smiled, feeling that the story of the two families, now, not only stops at reconciling the past, but is also opening up new connections, new possibilities for the future of the next generation.

Vy stood looking at the warm scene before her eyes, her heart filled with an indescribable happiness. She looked at Khoi, who was standing next to her, his hand squeezing hers as a silent affirmation of the journey they had gone through together, and of the bright future that was waiting ahead.
