Chapter 5
Chapter 5 — Rain Stops, Heaven Clears
I took out my phone and prepared to call.
“Right now I will ask lawyer Vuong to sue you for misappropriation of property while holding office.”
“Can you guess... how many years in prison will the court sentence you to?”
Tran Hao's psychological defense line... Completely collapsed. He looked at me. Only fear remained in his eyes.
“No… don't…”
He grabbed the pen from the table. My hands were shaking so much I couldn't hold them steady. Finally, I still signed my name on the divorce agreement. To Nhu screamed loudly.
“You can't sign!”
Luu Van also rushed forward to stop. It's too late. I put the agreement away. Then gave it to Tieu Truong standing next to it.
“Profile.”
I looked at the three desperate faces before me.
“Now... can you guys get the hell out of my office?”
The three of them seemed to have lost their souls and quietly left. The office also became quiet again. I kept thinking... This is the end. Two days later. I got a call from the police again.
“May I ask... are you Ms. To Tinh?”
“We received a report.”
“Miss To Nhu... has been missing since three days ago.”
“The person who reported... is her mother, Ms. Liu Yun.”
The call from the police station was very formal. They asked me if I knew To Nhu. When was the last time you saw her? Have there ever been any conflicts between us? I answered truthfully. The tone is calm as if reporting work.
"Miss To, we understand your feelings. But the person who reported it, Ms. Luu Van, is very agitated right now."
The police officer on the other end of the line spoke in an objective voice.
"She accused you of threatening her daughter, Ms. To Nhu, because of a family dispute."
"At the same time, I suspect that Ms. To Nhu's disappearance has something to do with you."
I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass door in the office. Quietly looking at the busy traffic on the street.
“I threatened her?”
"That's right."
"Ms. Luu said that at the wedding, she said she would send Ms. To Nhu to jail."
“I did.”
I admit it very frankly.
“Because she stole the relics my mother left behind, worth millions of yuan.”
“Could it be that for theft... she doesn't deserve to go to jail?”
The other end of the line was silent for a few seconds.
“Okay, Miss To.”
“We have grasped the situation.”
“If we need more information in the future, we will contact you again.”
I hung up. Then call lawyer Vuong.
“To Nhu is missing.”
“Luu Van reported to the police, saying it was me who did it.”
Lawyer Vuong's eyebrows didn't even move. He only asked one question.
“What do you need me for?”
“Take over all communications with the police.”
I calmly replied.
“I don't want to receive any more calls from them.”
"Besides."
“Go investigate the money flow and recent contact history of Luu Van and Tran Hao.”
“I want to know... what tricks they're playing.”
Lawyer Vuong nodded then turned and left. Professional work... Let the professionals handle it. I won't let those trivial things disrupt my life. They are even more limitless than I thought. Afternoon. An unknown phone number sent me a photo. To Nhu was tied tightly to a chair. Mouth sealed with black tape. Hair is messy. There were tear streaks on his face. His eyes were filled with fear. On her body... Still wearing her wedding dress. Behind is an old, dilapidated warehouse. Beside Below the photo is a line of text.
“If you want it to live, prepare 50,000,000 yuan.”
“Do not report to the police.”
“Wait for the next news.”
I looked at the photo for a long time. Forward it to lawyer Vuong. Accompanied by exactly two words. Lawyer Vuong's phone call immediately came.
“General Manager To.”
“How are you so sure?”
“From her eyes.”
I replied very calmly.
“I know what it's like when she's really scared.”
She once broke my father's most beloved antique vase. My father didn't have time to speak yet. She was shaking all over. The cut surface no longer had any drops of blood. I can't even speak. It's a fear that comes from the very marrow of your bones. Not just a look of panic on the surface like in this photo. It's too much.
“One more point.”
I enlarged the photo.
“The rope tied to her hands is a living knot.”
“Even elementary school students who have studied scouting can take it off by themselves.”
“Most important…”
My voice gradually cooled down.
“Why did the kidnappers let her wear a wedding dress?”
“Wearing like that is both difficult to move around and too prominent.”
“Unless…”
“The audience for this play is only me.”
“They want me to believe that To Nhu was kidnapped right at the wedding.”
“And I…”
“It is the one behind everything because love turns to hate.”
