Chapter 29 — Reef Keeper

Updated 22/08/2026 6 min read

Six months after the fateful stormy night, right on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of Khue's return to Hon Vong Ngu, the research institute organized a survey to comprehensively evaluate the recovery status of Da Bac reef, to summarize the results achieved after a year of turmoil but also full of achievements. Khue, as head of the research station, personally led the survey team, along with Nguyen, Thao, and a group of experts from the institute.

That morning, the sea was as calm as a mirror, the sky was blue without a single cloud, as if nature itself was celebrating this important milestone. Khue stood on the boat, looking down at the clear water where she could see the seabed from above. An indescribable feeling of excitement rose in her heart - a feeling similar to the first morning she dived here, a year ago, when she discovered the first traces of destruction.

"Ready?" Nguyen asked, already wearing a diving suit and holding specialized measuring equipment in hand.

"Ready." Khue replied, smiled, checked the belt and oxygen tank one last time according to the careful habit that had been ingrained in her blood since the first days of learning to dive with her father, then with Nguyen and Thao tumbled into the clear blue water.

The underwater world appeared before Khue's eyes, and this time, it was no longer the tragic image of white coral patches and jagged explosion holes like a year ago. Instead, there is a vibrant, breathtaking scene — hundreds of coral nurseries have now blended into the natural landscape, new coral branches have grown large enough that it is no longer possible to distinguish between transplanted corals and naturally grown corals.

Sunlight penetrates the water, forming shimmering columns of light, dancing on the colorful coral background, just like the picture Khue once imagined when reading her father's passionate descriptions in an old diary. She swam slowly, letting all her senses be fully immersed in this scene - the gentle sound of fish splashing in the water, the distinctive salty smell of seaweed, the feeling of warm water passing over her skin, all blending into a symphony of life surging violently.

Thao swam in front, holding an underwater camera, constantly capturing every moment, occasionally turning to Khue to signal excitement when she discovered a rare fish or a particularly beautiful coral block. She has matured a lot compared to the timid young girl she once was, and now confidently controls every move underwater like a true professional diver, worthy of the position of deputy research station that Khue just promoted to her.

Khue slowly swam through the area that used to be the first explosion hole she discovered, which was now covered with blocks of coral and brain coral in all colors from turquoise, light purple, to brilliant orange. Schools of butterfly fish, parrotfish, and damselfish swim everywhere, some even crawling into coral holes to hide, just like what she had read in her father's diary about the pristine beauty of Da Bac reef many decades ago.

She took out her waterproof notebook and began recording the indicators: live coral coverage had increased from a red alert level to more than sixty percent, a number that far exceeded any of the most optimistic predictions in the project's original plan. Fish species diversity has also skyrocketed, with the return of many species that have disappeared from the area for many years, including schools of young snapper and grouper that are coming to reside and reproduce.

Nguyen swam closer, signaling her to pay attention to something special - right in the central area of "Pho Van Dam Coral Garden", a group of small sea turtles, three young turtles, were swimming leisurely among the coral branches, a rare and extremely precious sign that the ecosystem had recovered to the point of being able to attract even the most environmentally sensitive creatures.

Khue felt her tears welling up right under the diving goggles, mixing with the salty sea water around her. This was the vision she had been dreaming of for an arduous year — not just the restoration of an ecosystem, but a living testament to how love, perseverance, and solidarity can heal even the deepest wounds.

When the whole group rose to the surface after the survey, everyone could not hide their emotions and pride at the results beyond expectations.

"This is one of the most successful cases of coral reef restoration I have seen in my research career." An elderly expert from the institute, who had more than thirty years of experience in the field of marine ecology, spoke to Khue, his voice filled with admiration. "Not only because of the speed of recovery, but because of the way you have combined science with real community participation. This will be a model that is researched and learned in many other places."

Khue smiled, but in her heart she clearly understood that this success did not belong to her alone, but was the crystallization of a collective journey - from the volunteer watch nights of Vu and the young men in the neighborhood, from Uncle Suu's silent but steadfast atonement, from Mrs. Bay Xuyen's boundless love, from Bao Duy's brave pen, and above all, from the love that her father had cultivated since the days he was alive.

"We are also planning to open a small scholarship program for children of fishermen in the area who want to study marine ecology or oceanography." Khue shared more with the expert, her eyes lit up with enthusiasm. "We believe that it is the children who grow up from this sea, who understand it best, who will protect it best in the future, continuing what we have started."

The expert nodded approvingly and took careful notes in his notebook. "This is what makes the model you build here different — not just restoring ecosystems in the short term, but also seeding a generation of sustainable ocean protectors in the long term."

In the afternoon, after completing the survey work, Khue and Nguyen stayed a while longer on the boat, the sea had returned to its original richness. Khue took out her father's diary, which she now always carries with her as an indispensable companion, and opened it to the last page she had written many months ago.

"I did it, dad." She spoke, her voice soft but filled with pride, looking out at the sea sparkling in the afternoon sunlight. "The coral reef has revived, just as I wished. You have kept your promise."

Nguyen sat next to her, put his arm around her shoulder, and looked out to sea in meaningful silence. Without any more words, both of them understood that this moment - the moment of witnessing life strongly revived from the very place that had suffered the deepest hurt - was the most precious reward for all the sacrifices, losses, and tireless efforts they had gone through together throughout a tumultuous year.

From afar, the familiar sound of a ship's engine rang out, signaling that Vu's boat crew and the young men in the volunteer patrol team were returning from the morning watch shift. They waved to Khue and Nguyen as they passed by. Their tanned faces smiled brightly, leaving no trace of the suspicion and reticence that had dominated the first days when Khue first returned to the island. It's a simple image but makes Khue emotional every time she sees it - a community that has learned how to work together to protect what they cherish most.

"What do you think your father would say, if he could see all this?" Nguyen asked, his voice was gentle, his eyes followed Khue's gaze out to the coral nurseries sparkling in the late afternoon sunlight.

Khue thought for a moment, then smiled, her eyes shining with deep belief. "I think he would say, the sea has forgiven us, and now it's our turn to learn to live worthy of that forgiveness, forever after."

The boat slowly turned toward the wharf, leaving behind a sparkling sea in the afternoon sun, where hundreds of young coral branches were still silently stretching every day, without noise, without fanfare, just like the way human love and perseverance had silently healed an entire community during the past tumultuous year. Khue looked back one last time, fully feeling the peace spreading throughout her soul, before turning to smile at Nguyen, ready for a new chapter of her life, written right where all her stories began.
