Chapter 13
Chapter 13 — Summer On The Terrace
The truncated podcast episode appeared in the morning. The poster took the sentence Ms. Mai said about vegetable money, combined it with a paragraph where My said "we need money", and then titled it "Students apply for funding with the story of the poor". Ms. Mai called My and told her not to distribute any more books.
My listened silently, then said: "I'm sorry for showing the file."
Vy asked: "Do you want to remove the original?"
"No. I want to keep my rights, but I don't want anyone to hear Miss Mai's voice if she doesn't agree."
Hanh instructed to send a request to remove the collage and make a record. My called each interviewee and explained what had happened. Some people requested permanent deletion. My do, even though I know the original data may be needed for the record.
Quan said: "Keep it in a legal safe, don't give it out."
My nodded. “I understand that rights are not on/off buttons.”
Long was called to explain by the student union because his account used to download files. He showed his email history, admitting he had forwarded the preview to the media department without asking. The guild suspended your access for two weeks.
“Should I leave the group?” Long asked.
Vy replied: "If you leave, the data still has to be processed. If you stay, you have to accept someone else checking it."
Long chose to stay with limited powers. He made a public table of what he sent, sent a recall notice to the company, and apologized to each person.
Ms. Nhan called Vy and said the company did not create the collage, but could remove it if the group signed a data contract. Vy refused.
“Removing infringing content is a responsibility, not a gift in exchange for rights.”
“You don't understand how businesses operate.”
"We are learning. But the rights of the person being recorded cannot be a negotiated cost."
Mrs. Nhan was silent, then said she would consider it.
My open meeting took place in a small hall. More than a hundred students came, some out of curiosity, some because of the collage. My does not play podcasts. She read the interview process, pointed out the cut file and apologized for sending the preview.
“I don't ask people to believe me,” My said. “I ask everyone to read how we save data.”
Vy presented the value of the garden, but did not call it a place to save people. Quan presented the roof risk and the items the group had fixed. Ha said the kitchen wouldn't have enough vegetables if the garden was removed, but she also couldn't rely on it completely.
A student asked why he didn't accept money from the company to make things go faster. Ha replied: "Because the kitchen needs vegetables, there is no need to become an advertisement."
Another asked if the group was occupying the rooftop. Vy said they agreed to create shared regulations and the council would have representatives from people who are not part of the group.
Quan added: "If the regulations do not maintain a way out, I will protest even if the signer is my friend."
After the meeting, many students signed up for irrigation and testing shifts. Another group asked to use the rooftop for teaching. Ha suggested having a joint schedule.
However, an anonymous account posted a photo of Vy's preliminary drawing, saying the group had violated the school's document use regulations. Vy was panicked because the drawing signed by Ms. Huong was not complete.
Quan said: "Don't answer with emotions. Send the withdrawal and ask Ms. Huong to confirm."
Vy followed suit. Ms. Huong confirmed that the drawing is a draft that has been allowed to be used within the scope of research, not a construction design. She also asked the group not to send drafts to outsiders anymore.
Vy apologized to Ms. Huong. She did not blame the company, even though the company used the copy. She clearly stated the part I sent it wrong.
That night, Quan brought a scanned copy of the torn maintenance book page, found from the old digitized archive. The page recording the advertising frame was proposed six years ago, but was rejected because of wind load and drainage. The person signing the approval at that time was the current administration department.
“They know the risks,” Quan said.
“Not sure if they know the new version is the same as the old version.”
“Then ask.”
Vy looked at the collage post on her phone, then looked at the notebook page. The story is being pushed about students asking for money, while the problem is a design that was rejected and is now back.
My said: "I will not do an expose episode. I will do an episode explaining how rights and data are cut off."
Vy nodded. “Slow down.”
Outside the hall door, company workers built a temporary fence around the stairs. The notice said "preparing for test dismantling — tomorrow".
My didn't release an expose, she released an episode about how the data was cut. She read the guidelines, telling listeners how a file could lose its context. She clearly stated that she once sent a preview to Long and did not check the permissions enough.
Xi did not name the company in the title. Hanh checked the wording and asked to remove the sentence "they stole" because there was no conclusion. My changed to "file used outside the agreed scope".
Vy felt uncomfortable because the new sentence was light, but understood that the records needed to be accurate.
During the open meeting, a student asked why the group did not sue. Hanh replied that the group is collecting evidence and does not want to turn user rights into a media competition.
Long discussed with the student association, asking for legal support. He did not hold a central position, only created a table of rights.
Quan returned from his hometown with his father's medical examination. He was tired, but immediately looked at the exit diagram. Vy told him to rest first, he agreed after handing over.
“You don't have to prove your credibility by not stopping,” Vy said.
Quan looked at her. “I know.”
“You talk too fast.”
“I'm practicing.”
The team checks the advertising frame. A red mark placed near the old tank can concentrate the load. They sent a request to an independent engineer to look at it and not come to their own conclusions.
Ms. Nhan called, saying the red seal was only an internal plan. Vy asked why it appeared in the group's profile. She didn't know, so she asked to check the contractor.
“We need a record of who created the copy,” Quan said.
“I will ask.”
Ha reported that some users wanted to remove their names from the board. My update, not convinced to keep. Rules for changing code names, only administrators know.
Uncle Loi, the security guard, agreed to speak during the meeting but did not record it. My wrote down the content in text and sent it to you to read again. He changed the sentence "I need the garden" to "I need a place to rest when changing shifts".
Vy said: "Each correction makes the sentence more real."
My smiled: “And longer.”
In the afternoon, the collage post was removed but many copies remained. The group does not ask people to share the correction, only provides a public document link. Some people read it, others still believe the old article.
Quan said: "The reader cannot be controlled."
“Just control how you speak.”
In the group mailbox, an account sent a scanned copy of a torn maintenance book page. Sender unknown. Tung from the student union checked the metadata and saw that the file was created from the admin room computer.
Hanh requested not to publish the source and sent it to the board of directors to ask. They replied that it might be an old backup and needed to be verified.
The day of the council meeting approaches. Vy practiced presenting, removing the sentences about "dreams" but keeping one sentence about the user. Quan practices the loading part, not using the word "sure".
My asked if What if the listener only remembers the cut song?
“I still want to make the right version,” she said.
At the end of the session, the temporary fence around the stairs was opened. On the terrace, there is a new measurement mark of the company, extending to the exact location of the old tank.
That morning, the student council asked the group to present their plan in ten minutes, no more. Vy cut out the long introduction, keeping three pictures: the bangs before making, the bangs after making and the bangs if advertising frames are placed. Quan writes below each picture a sentence about data limits. Ha chose a photo of a hand pulling vegetables, but after asking the person in the photo. My did not include the emotional recording in the opening.
Long discovered that some people in the group wanted to focus on finding out who sent in the torn maintenance book. He understood that it was important, but if he turned the meeting into a manhunt, the problem of loading the roof would be forgotten. He suggested separating into two profiles: security profile and access permission profile. Hanh agreed and added a separate person in charge of each file.
Ms. Huong took them down to the archives again. In a file box containing last year's minutes, it clearly states that the old tank must be inspected after each rainy season. No completed signature. Uncle Sau remembers reporting that, but the management department changed people at that time. Vy did not use this detail to accuse anyone; She put it in the category "transfer unfinished".
Quan checked the new measurement mark. The company's chalk mark overlaps the group's mark, but there is an additional arrow pointing toward the railing. He took a photo with a scale, then deleted the close-up photo of the technician's face appearing in the corner. Duy, the company's technician, thanked him for not using photos to pressure him. He said he would ask his team to mark the area with a different color to avoid confusion.
At the end of the meeting, the council asked the first question: if advertising stops, where will the group get money for maintenance; If this continues, who will be responsible when the roof is damaged? If relocated, who will take care of the trees? Three questions without beautiful answers. Vy gave each person a sentence, asking to pay with figures and the name of the person responsible, not with a promise. That night, they sat by the vegetable tub until the hallway light turned off by itself, then used a flashlight to check each connection.
