Chapter 30
Chapter 30 — Summer Rescuer
At the end of September, when the early autumn winds began to blow coolly across Duong Xanh town, the summer tourist season officially ended with the annual closing ceremony at Bai Duong - a tradition that has been around for many years, but this year has a more special meaning than ever for everyone who has experienced this tumultuous summer.
The beach that afternoon was much more deserted than on peak days, with only a few late-season tourists enjoying the last warm sunny days before autumn. The Bai Duong rescue team, now increased to twelve members with new faces joining, gathered in front of the spaciously upgraded lifeguard station, preparing for the season-ending flag lowering ceremony — a simple but solemn ceremony, marking the end of summer and recognizing the team's efforts throughout the season.
Thao Nhi, in the role of permanent Deputy Captain, stood in front of the line of troops, looking around at the faces that had become as familiar as family over the past summer. Trong Nghi stood next to her, holding the rescue team flag that had faded from the sun and wind for many years, preparing to lower it according to traditional rituals.
"This summer," Trong Nghi said, his voice ringing solemnly but also full of pride, "was the most difficult summer, but also the most meaningful summer in my thirty-year career. We faced unprecedented danger, witnessed the truth that had been buried for eight years finally exposed, and together protected countless lives, despite all pressures and threats. I am proud of each and every one of you."
He gave Thao Nhi the honor of lowering the flag for the last time of the summer, a gesture with deep symbolic meaning that the whole team understood. Thao Nhi stepped up, her hands shaking slightly as she grabbed the rope, pulling the flag slowly down into the falling sunset, while the whole team stood solemnly and saluted according to protocol.
When the flag was neatly folded, Thao Nhi turned to look at the whole team - Trong Nghi with gray hair after a turbulent summer but eyes still shining with pride; Mr. Kiet, now one of her closest teammates, no longer had any trace of the skepticism from the first day; Mr. Thi, her close friend who has always been by her side through all the ups and downs; Nhat Quynh, has become much more mature after a challenging summer; Do Gia Lam, still quiet but always trustworthy; and new faces, rescue workers have just joined, bringing with them the enthusiastic spirit of a new beginning.
A little further away, Bach Duong stood with her family - Ms. Hoa, Mr. Dat - and Nghiem Bao Long and Duong Viet Ha also attended this special ceremony, all applauding when the flag lowering ceremony was completed.
"This summer has taught me a lot of things," Thao Nhi said, when invited to say a few words to the team and special guests. "It taught me that the truth, no matter how long it is buried, will eventually find its way to the light, if there are enough courageous people who constantly search for it. It taught me that pain, no matter how deep, can be transformed into strength to protect others, instead of engulfing us in darkness. And it taught me that I never have to be alone in my fight, as long as I have people like you by my side."
She looked towards her mother, who had stood strong for eight long years despite carrying pain and unresolved doubts; Looking towards Mr. Dat, the teacher who guided her from the first days of learning how to make peace with the sea; and finally, looking towards Bach Duong, who came from a strange place but chose to stay, choosing to become an indispensable part of her life.
"My dad once told me that the sea is not evil, the sea just doesn't care, and we have to be the ones to care for the sea," she continued, her voice ringing with emotion but also filled with determination. "This summer, I think I fully understood the meaning of that statement. We cannot control the sea, we cannot stop every storm, every fierce wave. But we can choose to care, we can choose to act, we can choose to stand for the truth and the safety of those around us, no matter how difficult it is."
Duong Viet Ha, standing next to Nghiem Bao Long, recorded the last few lines for the article that closed the series of reports that had followed her all summer. "I think this will be the most beautiful ending to my series," she told Mr. Long, her eyes following Thao Nhi standing in the middle of the rescue team. "Not a verdict, not a statistic, but an image of a community that has stood together to defend the truth and protect each other."
"You're right," Nghiem Bao Long replied, nodding in agreement. "I have been a police officer in this town for nearly twenty years, witnessed many ups and downs, but have never seen anything that makes me as proud of Duong Xanh as what happened this summer."
The ceremony ended in a warm atmosphere, everyone gathered together, sharing stories and memories of the past summer, laughter mixed with the steady sound of waves lapping the shore. Little Tom, brought by his mother to attend, ran and jumped on the sand, with absolutely no trace of the nightmare that almost took his life in the middle of summer.
As the ceremony gradually ended, Thao Nhi and Bach Duong separated from the crowd and walked along the water's edge, where the last waves of summer were gently lapping the sandy shore, incredibly gentle and quiet compared to the fierce storms that had passed.
"Do you remember," Bach Duong asked, holding her hand tightly, "at the beginning of the summer, you told me that you were afraid this summer would not be peaceful?"
"I remember," Thao Nhi replied, smiling and looking out at the calm sea under the last sunset of summer. "And you were right — this summer was not peaceful, in every sense of the word. But in the end, it led us to a peace that was much deeper than I could have imagined when the summer began."
They stopped at the water's edge, looking out at the horizon where the sun was slowly setting, painting both sky and sea in a beautiful mix of orange, pink, and purple. Cape Sa Den, now with a new warning system and an embankment structure that is being redesigned to be safer, is no longer a symbol of fear and loss, but becomes part of the story of healing, of justice served, of love found amid turbulence.
Thao Nhi closed her eyes, took a deep breath, feeling the familiar smell of sea salt mixed with the cool breeze of the approaching autumn. In that moment, she no longer felt any pain or resentment creeping into her heart, only a complete, profound peace remained, as if eight years of waiting had finally found a worthy end.
"I did it, dad," she whispered, too soft for Bach Duong to hear, but enough for her to feel that, somewhere, her father was smiling at her, proud of the journey she had gone through.
The sea in front of them was calm, quiet and peaceful under the late summer sunset, as if it itself was breathing a sigh of relief after a stormy summer, ready to welcome a new autumn, a new chapter, where the truth had been found, justice had been served, and love had blossomed amidst the uncertain waves, then condensed into a calm, peaceful, and safe sea for all who still believed in stepping into that deep blue water.
In the distance, little Tom's laughter still echoed on the sand, mixed with the warm voices of the rescue team cleaning up the last items of the ceremony. Trong Nghi stood looking at the sea for a long time, the flag folded in his hand, his face carrying the peaceful look of a person who has fully completed the responsibilities assigned to him by life. He thought of his old friend, his teammate who had passed away eight years ago, and silently thought that, even if it was too late, Mr. Loc's honor had finally been fully restored, and his legacy would live on forever in each successive generation of rescuers at Bai Duong.
Thao Nhi and Bach Duong stood there, hand in hand, watching the sun slowly disappear behind the horizon, leaving behind a clear night sky, dotted with the first stars of the beginning of autumn. Their turbulent summer of rescue has ended, but their story, the story of courage, of truth, and of love that blossoms amid danger, will continue to write new chapters, as calm and steady as the sea itself, quietly embracing the town of Duong Xanh in its gentle embrace, night after night, season after season, forever after.
