Chapter 9
Chapter 9 — The Dowry Without a Name
The small porcelain bowl was uncovered, releasing a delicate wisp of steam that curled into the air. I lifted a spoonful of the bird's nest soup to my lips; the sweetness was faint, barely a suggestion, yet it was perfectly balanced. Thanh Hoa, standing nearby, broke the quiet with a soft inquiry: "Will the embroidery house be sending over the ledger books for review this afternoon?"
"They will," I replied.
"Then should I prepare the ink and brushes for you?"
I finished the final drop of the soup, setting the silver spoon down against the fine china with a faint, crystalline chime.
"That will not be necessary."
I leaned back into the plush cushions of my chair, closing my eyes to let the warmth of the afternoon sun wash over my face. The stillness of the room was comforting, a rare respite from the burdens of my station.
"We shall look through them tomorrow," I murmured, my voice drifting off into the golden haze of the day.
Thanh Hoa offered a quiet, respectful acknowledgement and gathered the scattered scrolls and ledgers, her movements rhythmic and hushed. As her footsteps receded, leaving me alone in the gentle glow of the chamber, the small bowl on the table sat abandoned and hollow, its contents long since consumed.
