Chapter 30
Chapter 30 — The Heiress and Her Scholarship Friend
Six years later...
Anh Duong School welcomed a fresh autumn morning, when the opening ceremony of the annual scholarship program called "Nurturing Anh Duong" was officially held in the large hall - the place that witnessed many ups and downs of students Minh Dang and Khanh Vy many years ago.
Minh Dang, who has now graduated with honors in Environmental Engineering from a prestigious university after completing a scholarship program to study abroad, stood on the podium, his eyes filled with the maturity and bravery of a person who has grown through many challenges. He has just officially taken over the position of CEO of sustainable development of Tran Gia Group, while still maintaining a close business cooperation relationship with Do Gia in renewable energy projects.
"Six years ago, I was a poor student who entered this school with a single scholarship, carrying many fears and low self-esteem," Minh Dang said to the students who were anxiously waiting for this year's scholarship results. "But it was here that I learned that a person's value does not lie in his background or assets, but in his strength to overcome difficulties and his sincerity in treating those around him."
Sitting in the front row, Khanh Vy — now Deputy General Director in charge of development strategy at Do Gia after graduating with a degree in Business Administration — smiled proudly as she watched her husband-to-be give an inspiring speech to the crowd. The engagement ring sparkled on her finger, a gift that Minh Dang gave her six months ago, on a romantic evening by the beach, marking the next step after the simple promise the two exchanged under the old poinciana tree on their graduation day.
The "Nurturing Sunshine" scholarship program that the two founded together three years ago, funded by the shared charity fund of both Tran Gia and Do Gia, has helped more than fifty students in difficult circumstances across the city have the opportunity to study at high-quality schools, closing the meaningful circle that their love story began with a single scholarship last year.
After the ceremony, when Minh Dang stepped down from the podium, a tenth-grade girl, with a timid appearance but energetic eyes, approached him.
"I also come from a difficult family like you did in the past," the girl said, her voice still shaking slightly from nervousness. "I... I don't know if I'm good enough to deserve this scholarship."
Minh Dang smiled, knelt down to the girl's eye level, his eyes filled with deep understanding. "I believe, you don't have to prove you're 'worthy' of anyone," he said, his voice warm. "You just need to believe in yourself, do your best within your abilities, and never let your background define your limits. That's exactly what a special friend taught me, right here at school, many years ago."
The girl nodded, her eyes lit up with new hope, bowed in thanks before running off to join the crowd of friends her age.
Khanh Vy walked up to Minh Dang, took his arm, and they both looked out at the schoolyard filled with laughter and chatter from the new generation of students. "You know," she said, her voice filled with nostalgic emotion, "sometimes I still can't believe our journey has come so far, from a chance encounter in the school hallway."
"Me too," Minh Dang replied, squeezing her hand. "But I believe, it's not a complete coincidence. Perhaps, fate has arranged for two people from two completely different worlds to meet each other, to prove together that sincere love and perseverance can overcome all barriers, whether it is the gap between rich and poor or seemingly insurmountable secrets."
While the two were talking, a familiar car stopped in front of the school gate. Bao Tram and Gia Huy - now an official couple after many years together - got out, waving and calling from afar.
"Are you two standing here talking without waiting for us?" Bao Tram asked, her voice still as mischievous as ever, running to hug Khanh Vy. "I just got here from the hospital. The morning shift was incredibly long, but I definitely had to stop by to congratulate this year's scholarship program."
Bao Tram, now a dedicated pediatrician at the city's largest hospital, while Gia Huy took over the family's auditing company, both still maintain close friendships with Khanh Vy and Minh Dang throughout their years apart in college, often gathering whenever they have the opportunity.
"What about Vu Khang? Is he coming?" Gia Huy asked, looking around searching.
"He texted to apologize because he was busy in court defending a labor rights case," Khanh Vy replied, smiling slightly and proudly. "He is now a young lawyer quite famous in the field of protecting the vulnerable, often accepting free cases for families who cannot afford to pay."
"Who would have thought that the man who caused so much trouble all those years ago would now become a lawyer full of passion for justice," Bao Tram commented, shaking her head in admiration at that spectacular change.
The whole group entered the school campus together, where Mr. Bao Quoc, Mrs. Hanh, Mr. Thanh Nam and grandmother Do Gia were sitting and chatting intimately in the area reserved for guests of honor, a vivid testament to an inter-family relationship built on the foundation of mutual respect and trust, completely different from the self-serving calculations of the past.
"Seeing my children grow up like that," Mrs. Hanh said to Mr. Bao Quoc, her eyes filled with happy tears, "I no longer have any regrets about the difficult years that have passed. It was all worth it, when I saw Minh Dang happy and successful like today."
"Me too," Grandma Do Gia replied, smiling kindly — a smile completely different from the stern, cold look she used to show many years ago. "Sometimes, the most valuable lessons in life come from the young people we thought we needed to protect and teach."
That afternoon, when the autumn sunlight gradually faded on the Anh Duong schoolyard, Minh Dang and Khanh Vy stood alone under the familiar old poinciana tree, looking at the new students who were eager to explore the school that would be with them in their upcoming youth years.
"Our wedding day is only three months away," Khanh Vy said softly, leaning her head on Minh Dang's shoulder, her voice full of anticipation.
"I can't wait any longer," Minh Dang replied, gently kissing her hair. "After all we have been through together, I believe, there is no challenge ahead that we cannot overcome together."
They stood there, under the shade of the old poinciana tree that still bloomed with bright red petals every summer, looking at the delicately curved iron gate of Anh Duong school - the place that had witnessed the entire journey from the first days of strangers, through all the turbulence of arranged marriage and the secret of their lives, until today's moment of perfect happiness - knowing that, even though their story had passed the most important chapter, there were still many new promising pages waiting to be written, with their own hands and hearts. of two people who have learned to love each other in the most sincere way, overcoming all prejudices of the world around them.
In the pocket of Minh Dang's blazer, a small, discolored piece of paper has been carefully preserved by him for the past six years - the first letter Khanh Vy wrote to him during the most difficult days, when they both had to hide their feelings under the pressure of marriage and family. He never told her, he always carried it with him, as a reminder of the arduous but also extremely meaningful journey that the two of them had overcome together to have the happiness they have today.
"What are you thinking?" Khanh Vy asked, noticing his distant, nostalgic eyes.
"I'm thinking about the poor student who timidly stood in the middle of the school hallway six years ago," Minh Dang replied, smiling slightly, "who never dared to dream that one day, he would stand here, at this very school, preparing to marry the girl he loved most in the world."
Khanh Vy smiled, squeezed his hand, both of them turned their eyes to the distant horizon, where the sunset dyed the autumn sky bright orange, closing a beautiful journey but also opening up many new and promising chapters of their lives, together, forever.
