Chapter 25
Chapter 25 — The Inn at the End of the Pass
Two weeks after the event, the media effect far exceeded all initial expectations of Thao and the entire community of Back Deo hamlet. Articles and short videos about the story of Vuc Suong Pass, about the patchwork family tenaciously clinging to preserving the heritage, spread widely across social networking platforms, attracting the attention not only of the public but also of experts in tourism and cultural preservation.
This positive public pressure has produced a marked change in the attitude of the authorities. Just two weeks after the event, Thao received official notice of a special working session at the provincial committee headquarters, where the "heritage road" project would be presented directly to the approval board, including representatives of the Trans-Mountain Tunnel Project Management Board and relevant departments and agencies.
On the day of the meeting, Thao, Khai Dang, and representatives of Lung Deo hamlet - Mr. Bay Trinh and Ms. Sau Hong - were present early, bringing with them the entire project documents that had been carefully completed through many months of preparation, along with a list of consensus signatures from nearly all households in the hamlet.
The presentation took place in a solemn but no less tense atmosphere. Khai Dang, as an engineer directly participating in the project, presented in detail the technical feasibility of the plan to retain part of the old road, combined with upgrading it into an experiential tourist route, running parallel to the new tunnel serving main traffic. Thao continued, sharing about the cultural and historical values of the pass, about the stories people have been attached to for many generations, and about the sustainable development model that the community has built together.
"We are not against the development, we are not against the new tunnel." Thao spoke, her voice rang out with confidence before the review board. "We just hope to have an opportunity to prove that the old and the new can completely coexist and complement each other, instead of having to completely eliminate either one."
After nearly three hours of presentations and answering questions, the review board announced that it would need more time to consider, but the general atmosphere of the meeting, different from the bureaucratic coldness of previous meetings with La Duc Vinh, carried more positive signals than Thao dared to hope.
Exactly one week later, the official decision was sent back. Thao opened the envelope with trembling hands, the whole family gathered around, holding their breath, waiting.
"Agree to approve the plan to retain the old pass route with a length of about twelve kilometers through the area of Back Deo hamlet, converting its function into an experiential tourist route combined with preserving cultural heritage, operating in parallel with the main mountain tunnel route." Thao read each line aloud, her voice trembling with extreme emotion. "The State will support part of the funding to upgrade basic infrastructure, while creating conditions for households in the area to develop the community tourism model."
Cheers broke out in the inn's dining room. Nhat Minh jumped up and down with joy, Thuy Duong hugged her sister, tears of happiness rolling down. Gia Binh stood still for a moment, then couldn't help but smile brightly, embracing both Thao and Mrs. Ha in an emotional hug.
"I did it! I really did it!" Gia Binh shouted, his voice cracking with happiness and pride.
Mr. Bay Trinh, upon hearing the news, immediately ran to the inn, his eyes shining with the rare tears of a man who had gone through many ups and downs along this pass. "Chinh must be smiling brightly up there. He has done something that no one dared to think of."
The good news quickly spread throughout Back Deo village. Mrs. Sau Hong, even though she had intended to move away, rushed to the inn as soon as she heard the news, hugging Thao with tears in her eyes. "I will stay! I have decided, I will reopen the shop, switching to selling souvenirs and local specialties tourists. Thank you, thank you for not giving up."
Uncle Tam Nghi, who was passing by while carrying goods, heard the news via CB radio from other drivers and also pulled over to celebrate with everyone, his voice booming with excitement. "So you can still visit this restaurant for a long time! So happy, so happy!"
The entire Back Deo village, that evening, was immersed in an atmosphere of spontaneous celebration, each person informed the other, laughter and congratulations echoed throughout the houses along the pass, as a living testament to the power of solidarity, of the never-ending belief in the value of the land they all call home.
Khai Dang stood silently looking at that scene of happy reunion, his heart filled with indescribable happiness. He knows that his decision to transfer jobs will most likely be reconsidered after this success, but what makes him happiest is not the open career prospect, but being able to fully witness the moment when his family, whom he loved deeply, finally won a worthy victory after many unremitting efforts.
When everyone had gradually calmed down from their joy, Thao stepped out onto the porch and stood silently looking down at the Vuc Suong pass stretching under the sunset, which was now no longer just a fear of an erased future, but had become a promise of a new chapter full of hope.
Khai Dang walked out and stood next to her, both silently admiring the familiar scene but now it had a completely different meaning.
"We did it." He spoke softly, turning to look at her, his eyes filled with sincere feelings that had grown silently over the past months.
"It's not us, it's everyone." Thao replied, smiled, then looked up at him, her eyes sparkling in the sunset. "But thank you, for always being by my side, believing in something that everyone initially thought was unrealistic."
Khai Dang gently lifted her chin, the distance between the two gradually narrowed, no longer interrupted by any phone calls or unexpected events like before. The first kiss between the two took place gently and warmly, under the sunset that dyed the entire pass yellow, as an affirmation of everything they had gone through together, fought and won together.
"I love you, Thao." Khai Dang whispered after the kiss, his eyes filled with the most sincere feelings he had ever had for someone.
"I love you too." Thao replied, her voice trembling with happiness, leaning her head on his shoulder, looking towards the pass that was gradually sinking into darkness, but now, no longer carrying the fear of the old days, but filled with the light of a new future waiting ahead.
From inside the house, through the window, Thuy Duong accidentally caught that moment, quickly pulled Nhat Minh and Gia Binh's hands closer, all three held their breath and looked out, not daring to speak up to disrupt her sister's romantic moment.
"Finally, we kiss each other." Gia Binh whispered softly, his voice full of teasing but his eyes shone with sincere joy for her happiness.
"Shh, don't make noise, let Thao and Uncle Dang have some privacy." Thuy Duong squealed softly, even though she was smiling from ear to ear at that sweet scene.
Mrs. Ha stood behind the three children, smiling gently as she witnessed the warm scene of the whole family. Her heart was filled with a deep gratitude for the second chance that fate had given her - the chance to return, to witness her children, although not completely blood related, grow up into strong, loving and forgiving people.
That night, after everyone had fallen asleep, Thao sat alone at the wooden counter, took out her mother's recipe book, and wrote a new line on the last page, continuing her mother's old message: "I have kept my promise, mother. This house, this pass, has found a way for the people I love to stay." Closing the notebook, she looked out the window, where the moonlight was gently shining down on Vuc Suong pass, like a silent blessing for a new chapter full of hope about to open.
She looked back at the past - from the day her father passed away, her stepmother left, taking care of the entire family alone amid many doubts, to the stormy days due to rumors of a new tunnel, the arguments, the tears, and even the unexpectedly warm moments when a strange man entered her life in the middle of an ordinary foggy morning like any other morning. All of those pieces have now come together to create a complete picture, imperfect but real, warm and full of vitality, just like this Vuc Suong pass itself - winding, bumpy, but always leading people back to a place worthy of being called home.
