I instructed him to weigh the box once more and retrieve the electronic receipt detailing the exact weight recorded by the repair shop at the time of dispatch. The initial weight at the point of origin was precisely one thousand and forty-two grams. The current weight, inclusive of all packaging materials, stood at a meager six hundred and thirty-one grams. Meanwhile, the official factory weight of the camera lens alone was four hundred and five grams.

The third victim was an elderly woman whose daughter had mailed her a precious gold necklace. Upon collecting the parcel from the designated pickup point, she brought it back to her new residence before finally opening it. Inside the box, she found nothing save for a solitary strip of yellow plastic binding. The courier company argued that since the external packaging had arrived completely intact, it was impossible to determine who might have pilfered the contents. The elderly woman possessed no video recording of the unboxing process, yet she had prudently retained the outer packaging. I urged her to photograph the sealed edges closely. When the images arrived, I zoomed in on the details, discovering a faint, black thread trapped right between the overlapping layers of transparent adhesive tape—an exact match for the stray fiber found on my own carton.

By that very evening, the number of victims who had reached out to me had grown to nine. Not every case could conclusively prove that the theft occurred within the transit network. Some individuals had discovered the discrepancy days after opening their parcels; others had carelessly discarded the packaging; and a few had no recollection whatsoever of the initial shipment weight. I set those inconclusive cases aside, narrowing my focus to five instances supported by relatively comprehensive evidence. All five parcels shared identical characteristics: valuable contents, inadequate insurance coverage, passage through the very same logistical route, and abnormal weight fluctuations occurring specifically upon arrival at the western city branch. Furthermore, every single outer package had been resealed with transparent tape, while the internal logs detailing these weight discrepancies had all been conveniently categorized away as mere equipment measurement errors.

I constructed a chronological timeline. The first anomalous incident had taken place exactly a month prior, after which the frequency escalated sharply. During the most recent week, such incidents were occurring at an average rate of one every two days. If the issue were truly nothing more than malfunctioning scales, the recorded weights should fluctuate randomly, sometimes increasing and sometimes decreasing. Yet all seventeen parcels had registered solely as lighter. If it were merely systemic error, the anomalies would hardly concentrate exclusively on mobile phones, gold ornaments, and camera lenses.

The following morning, I received a phone call from the customer service hotline at national headquarters. The representative informed me that a special investigation team had already been established.

“We have preliminarily determined that your parcel indeed experienced abnormal weight fluctuations during the transit process.”

“As a gesture of goodwill under our standard service policy, we are prepared to offer you an advance compensation of one thousand yuan.”

“Should the missing contents be recovered at a later date, we will handle that matter separately.”

“Why precisely one thousand yuan?”

“Because you did not purchase additional insurance coverage.”

“Please provide me with the formal regulatory basis for this compensation limit.”

The customer service agent fell silent for a moment.

“You may review the specific terms and conditions directly on our platform.”

“When I placed the order, did the platform display a distinct, dedicated prompt clearly warning me that if thirty-eight thousand yuan worth of gold jewelry were lost without extra insurance, I would receive only a thousand yuan in return?”

“Users are required to agree to our electronic terms of service prior to placing any order.”

“How many pages does that agreement contain in total?”

“That is to say…”

“Were the liability limitation clauses displayed prominently, printed in bold, or made subject to a mandatory separate confirmation?”

She offered no reply. I pressed onward.

“I explicitly stated in the parcel remarks that the contents were a gold ring and clearly noted its actual market value.”

“The intake clerk completed the standard physical inspection.”

“He was fully aware of the item's high value yet accepted it for transport anyway, without reminding me to purchase insurance or refusing the shipment.”

“Now, the branch office has even gone so far as to falsify genuine weight anomalies, passing them off as mere equipment errors.”

“This can hardly be classified as an ordinary transit risk.”

“I must insist that you investigate these deliberate human interventions first.”

The hotline representative replied that she needed to consult her superiors and call me back. By afternoon, investigators from the headquarters team arrived at the local branch. The four other victims and I gathered there as well. Manager Luo was nowhere to be seen; the staff claimed he was feeling unwell and had taken sick leave. The lead investigator, a woman surnamed Xu, did not rush to discuss compensation. Instead, she meticulously inspected the evidence for every single parcel: shipping videos, purchase and repair receipts, initial weights, packaging photographs, and unboxing recordings.

She cautioned us repeatedly: “A weight anomaly merely proves that the physical state of the cargo changed during transit. It cannot, by itself, conclusively prove who took the items.”

I nodded in agreement. “That is precisely why I request the extraction of all security camera footage and system operation logs.”

Manager Xu glanced at me. “We are already in the process of doing so.”

The technical specialists from headquarters successfully recovered the modification history stored within the system. When my parcel had entered the local branch, the automatically recorded scale weight was precisely two hundred and eighty-one grams. The system had triggered a prominent red alert: 【The weight variance from the previous checkpoint exceeds the acceptable threshold; manual inspection is required.】 The on-duty staff member had taken a snapshot for re-evaluation. In that photograph, the tamper-evident seal across the opening of the carton had already vanished. Six full minutes later, Manager Luo logged in using his personal credentials, manually altered the status to read: 【Scale equipment malfunction】, and authorized the parcel to proceed for delivery. Among the sixteen remaining problematic parcels, twelve had likewise been handled through his account, while the final four were manipulated via the login of another supervisory staff member.

Manager Xu turned her gaze to the branch employees. “Was there actually something wrong with the weighing equipment?”

The warehouse manager shook his head. “Not at all. It was officially inspected and certified just last month.”
