Chapter 3 — The 'Poor' Girl Who Got Expelled
Streaming the daily life of an autistic girl twenty-four hours a day. If I can just release this exclusive footage, the advertising revenue and bonuses will surely be so massive I won't even be able to count them! Even if her mother pays double, so what? It was her signature on the paper—this private room is officially mine!
Those inner thoughts made my eardrums throb with a dull ache. Seeing my silence, the academic advisor retrieved the spare key, sliding it across the table toward Xu Nguyen.
The process is entirely legal and in accordance with regulations, the advisor stated. Xu Nguyen, you may move your luggage in now. Remember what you promised: you must take excellent care of your fellow student.
The student council members began clearing the desk, the struggle for the private room seemingly coming to an end. Xu Nguyen’s eyes were filled with a predatory greed. Her hand trembled as she reached for the key. Just as her fingers were about to brush against it, I slammed my hand down firmly on the application form. The conference room fell into an immediate, heavy silence. I leaned forward, staring directly into Xu Nguyen’s face.
Xu Nguyen, are you prepared to take full responsibility for every word you just uttered in this room?
Xu Nguyen recoiled, but bolstered by the advisor’s support, she grit her teeth and swore. Auntie, I have already told you, Nien Nien gave this to me herself! If I have lied about even a single word today, I will immediately write a letter of confession to the entire university and withdraw from my studies voluntarily!
The academic advisor wore a look of triumphant disdain. Seeing her vehement oath, I could not help but clap my hands slowly. Very well. Then you should start preparing to withdraw from the university in front of everyone here.
After I spoke, the small room became deathly quiet. Xu Nguyen shrank back, but quickly masked her panic with a cold sneer. She assumed I was merely bluffing. After all, the signature was something she had spent two days meticulously practicing after comparing the handwriting, and the red fingerprint was obtained by bumping into Nien Nien in the crowded cafeteria. With bloodshot eyes, Xu Nguyen straightened her back. Auntie, even if you do not want me to move in, there is no need to threaten me with expulsion! The signature is right here; everyone has eyes to see!
That is right, Mrs. Lam, this behavior of yours is truly excessive! The advisor slammed his hand on the table as he stood up. I remained unmoved, calmly unzipping my handbag and withdrawing a neatly folded piece of A4 paper. I slammed the document down next to the form bearing the red fingerprint.
If you all have eyes, then look very closely at this.
It was an orthopedic diagnosis report, stamped with the official red seal of the university hospital. I pointed to the date on the report, offering a cold smile. My daughter’s right wrist suffered a severe injury, and her ligaments were torn. Three days ago, her hand was placed in a splint.
I took a step forward, glaring at Xu Nguyen’s rapidly paling face. The doctor’s notes are very clear: for the next week, the injured area must not be subjected to any strain whatsoever. She cannot even hold a stainless steel spoon! I would like to ask you, student Xu Nguyen, did my daughter sign this paper using telekinesis, or did she perhaps use her toes?
The expressions of the student council members shifted instantly. Two male students stepped forward, carefully verifying the date, the patient’s name, and the hospital’s seal. It really was issued three days ago. Nien Nien has been wearing a cast; how could she have possibly written this? Oh my god, this is terrifying. Was the signature forged after all? She just swore a solemn oath that if she lied, she would withdraw from the university. She lied without even blinking!
The murmurs rippling through the room forced Xu Nguyen to lower her head. The fact that she had forged the signature to steal the private room was now irrefutably proven by the medical report. Xu Nguyen, who had been so arrogant moments ago, was now deathly pale, trembling so hard that her back hit the wall. No… that is not… Sir, please listen to my explanation…
Seeing the truth exposed, the academic advisor turned ashen, cold sweat beading on his forehead. He understood all too well the gravity of forging documents to misappropriate university resources. If this reached the disciplinary committee, his career would be over. He scrambled to reach for the papers on the table, but I had already anticipated his move, snatching them away and clutching them tightly to my chest.
What is wrong? Does the advisor feel that paper evidence is easy to destroy? I looked at him steadily. Or perhaps I should call the police now and let them take both the forged documents and the recording of this meeting? Are you an accomplice to this fraud, or are you merely aiding and abetting? Do you need me to help you reserve a bed in the detention center?
The advisor’s hand froze in mid-air, his entire body shaking. Desperate to save his own job, he immediately turned on Xu Nguyen, pointing his finger and shouting. How dare you, Xu Nguyen! You are a person blinded by greed and filled with nothing but lies! How dare you use forged documents to deceive me and the entire student council! I must have been blind to ever think you were a decent student!
