Chapter 24 — The Summer Contract of Western Beauty and Beasts

Updated 06/09/2026 7 min read

Three months later, on a clear summer morning, the field in front of Suong Hill farm was brightly decorated with strings of wildflowers forming arcs, long wooden tables covered with white cloths lined up in rows under the shade of ancient tea trees. This is the big day that the whole family has been preparing for many weeks - the real wedding of Nhieu Bach Son and Duong Nha Khanh.

Different from the simple, hasty marriage registration ceremony more than a year ago, this time, everything was carefully and warmly prepared, bearing the mark of the highland region where they built a perfect home together. Uncle Sau Lanh, as a family member, was busy directing the construction of the theater and arranging banquet tables from early morning, unable to hide the radiant smile on his wrinkled face.

Mr. Duong Khai Phong and a few close relatives came up the night before, unable to hide their emotions when they saw with their own eyes where his daughter had found true happiness. Ha Bich Tram was also present early, busy helping Nha Khanh prepare her makeup, constantly admiring her best friend's radiant beauty in a simple wedding dress made from white silk fabric, with delicate hand-embroidered floral motifs, completely different from the sophistication and luxury of the wedding dress she had prepared for her wedding with Viet Cuong last year.

Mr. and Mrs. Do Quang Vinh and Do Ngoc Lan were also present, sitting in the solemn front row. Mrs. Ngoc Lan's eyes followed every move of her grandchild with all love, without any suspicion like in the early days. Doctor Tu Ngoc Diem, lawyer Vuong Dinh Khai and many people in Doi Suong village were also present, creating a rare warm and harmonious atmosphere.

When it was time for the ceremony, Bach Son stood under a flower canopy made from wildflowers picked right in his home's fields, in an elegant gray suit, his face beaming with a happiness that was hard to hide. When Nha Khanh appeared, walking side by side with her father along the aisle full of flower petals, the whole space seemed to be silent for a moment before the pure, radiant beauty of the bride.

Mr. Duong Khai Phong gave his daughter's hand to Bach Son, his voice choked. "Please take care of and love my daughter well."

"I promise to do that, for the rest of my life," Bach Son replied, his eyes firmly looking straight at him, then turned to look at Nha Khanh, a gentle smile on his lips.

The ceremony was simple but full of emotions, without elaborate or lavish rituals, only the most sincere vows were written by both of them, read out amidst applause, laughter and even tears of happiness from their loved ones witnessing.

"I'm not a person good at saying beautiful words," Bach Son said, his voice trembling slightly with rare emotion. "I just know, from the day you appeared at my gate on a fateful rainy night, the lives of my father and I have completely changed. You have taught me to trust again, taught An to open his heart to the world. I promise, I will use the rest of my life to love and cherish you, as you have loved this family."

Nha Khanh held his hand tightly, her voice was equally choked. "I used to think that after everything I've been through, I would never dare to trust or love anyone again. But you, and An, have shown me that true happiness does not lie in flashiness or luxury, but in the simplest things - a warm home, someone who is always ready to protect, and a child who teaches you how to love unconditionally. I promise to be with you and An, forever, in every situation."

When the two shared their first kiss as real husband and wife, the sound of applause and cheers of congratulations echoed throughout the field, mixed with the chirping of birds in the ancient tea trees, creating the most complete harmony of happiness that both of them had ever experienced in their lives.

Standing next to her, Tue An, in a pretty little white dress hand-selected by Nha Khanh, watched the entire ceremony with unusually attentive eyes. After the ring exchange ceremony ended, amidst the bustling applause of everyone, the baby suddenly left his familiar place next to Uncle Sau, ran quickly towards Nha Khanh, proactively put his two small hands around her legs, raised his small face to look at her, his clear eyes full of trust and love.

"Mom," the baby called out, clearer and more decisive than ever before, no longer hesitant or just whispering in private moments like before, but a public call, full of pride among so many witnesses.

The whole space seemed silent for a sacred moment. Nha Khanh knelt down immediately, hugged Tue An, tears of happiness flowed uncontrollably, no longer tears of suffering and fear like the old days, but bursting tears of the most complete and complete happiness she had ever experienced in her entire life.

"I'm here, I'll always be here with you," she whispered in her ear, her voice breaking into a soft sob, hugging her little girl tightly as if she didn't want to leave for even a second.

Bach Son stood looking at that scene, unable to hide the tears of happiness rolling down the face of the man who was always strong and resilient. He walked over, knelt down and hugged both of the most important women in his life, amidst the applause and choked tears of emotion from all his loved ones who were witnessing this beautiful, sacred moment.

The highland summer sun spreads gold across the fields of Doi Suong farm, the gentle breeze carries the scent of tea and wildflowers throughout the space, fully witnessing the moment a family is truly formed - not from a pragmatic marriage agreement of the day, but from sincere love that has been nurtured through every arduous day of overcoming storms together. The flower that once languished amidst the lurking dangers of the city, finally found the most fertile ground to take root, sprout and bloom brilliantly, in the middle of a once desolate farm, now filled with laughter and perfect love.

The wedding party lasted until late afternoon, people in the village took turns singing rustic folk songs. Uncle Sau Lanh drank so much that his face turned red, constantly retelling the story of that fateful rainy night to anyone willing to sit and listen. His voice was full of pride as if he was the one who made love for the young couple. Mr. Duong Khai Phong sat next to Mr. and Mrs. Do Quang Vinh. The two families quickly became close, reviewing stories about their children and grandchildren, and about hopeful future plans.

When the sunset began to fall, dyeing the entire tea field in a warm orange color, Bach Son held Nha Khanh's hand, the two of them carried Tue An around the farm, past the cow barn where the calves were playing, past the small vegetable garden that Uncle Sau still took care of every day, past the same wooden gate where Nha Khanh once collapsed in the fateful rain more than a year and a half ago.

Standing in front of that gate, Nha Khanh stopped and looked at it for a long time, her heart filled with an emotion that was hard to put into words. "If I hadn't gotten lost here that night, perhaps my life would have turned in a completely different direction," she said softly, her voice filled with emotion.

"But you got lost here," Bach Son gently squeezed her hand, his eyes filled with love. "And I believe, it was not an accident, but fate arranged to bring you to the right place where you belong."

Tue An, held in her father's arms, also looked at the old wooden gate, then turned to look at Nha Khanh, smiling slightly, a smile as clear and innocent as the last sunlight spreading across the fields of Doi Suong farm.

Three small shadows side by side, printed long on the red basalt ground under the brilliant sunset, walking towards the warm little house waiting ahead - where a love story that began with a pragmatic contract marriage, has fully blossomed into a true family home, lasting forever over the years, in the heart of the deep green plateau, where the flower that has lost its way every year has finally found the most peaceful resting place of its life.

Behind them, the joyful music from the wedding party still echoed, mixed with the bustling laughter of the neighbors, and the sound of wild birds calling their flocks back to their nests in the pine trees far away. Mist Hill Farm, from a place where there was only loneliness and wounds silently gnawing at Bach Son father and son, had now truly become a place of complete peace, where sincere love had conquered all dangers, all calculations, all prejudices, to write a real fairy tale in everyday life, for those who thought they had lost all faith in happiness.
