Chapter 20 — The Switched Heiress: The Battle for Wealth

Three days after the extraordinary general meeting of shareholders, the investigation agency officially stepped in after receiving a denunciation from the lawyer representing Chuong Phat Group, along with all the evidence files that had been carefully prepared by Trac Minh Thu over the past many months. Ton Hoai Nam was summoned to work and had to face a series of questions surrounding the act of colluding to swap babies, along with accusations related to financial fraud and stock market manipulation through the secret purchase of shares through intermediary accounts.

In the early days, Hoai Nam still firmly denied all accusations, hired a team of top lawyers to defend him, and tried every way to question the legitimacy of each piece of evidence presented. But Diem Thu's detailed and consistent testimony, combined with irrefutable documentary evidence from backup hard drove and financial records, along with the testimony of Ms. Bui Ngoc Thu, created a chain of evidence so solid that even the best team of lawyers would find it difficult to find loopholes in the defense.

One afternoon, Bich Van returned home after work and saw Hoai Nam packing some personal belongings into large suitcases placed in the middle of the bedroom - according to a temporary agreement between the two lawyers, he would move to a separate apartment while the case was investigated, to avoid causing unnecessary stress for Khanh Thi.

She stood in the doorframe, looking at the man she had called her husband for nearly twenty years, now quietly folding each set of clothes, his face no longer maintaining the perfect composure as before, but clearly revealing the fatigue and bitterness of someone who had just witnessed the entire plan that had been built for eighteen years fall apart.

Hoai Nam did not raise his head to look at his wife, but still quickly folded each shirt into the suitcase. "Did you come to see if I was stealing anything?" His voice was tinged with sarcasm.

Bich Van stood straight in the door frame, her voice strangely calm. "I came because this is still my home. But I also want to ask you something, before everything comes to an official end. Why, Hoai Nam? Why could you do such a cruel thing, not only to me, but to your own daughter?"

Hoai Nam stopped, stood up straight, turned to look at his wife, his eyes for the first time during the conversation no longer hid anything. "Do you want to know the truth? Fine. For nearly twenty years, I worked hard, dedicating myself to this corporation, contributing no less than anyone in the Chuong family. But I will always be just a 'son-in-law', an outsider in the very house I worked hard to build. The bloodline clause in your father's will is a constant reminder that, no matter what I do, no matter how much I contribute, I will never truly belong. this place."

"So you chose to betray me, betray your own daughter, to get what you consider worthy?" Bich Van asked, her voice shaking with pent-up anger over the past several weeks.

"I don't think it's betrayal," Hoai Nam replied, his voice chillingly cold. "I'm just creating another path to achieve what I deserve. Khanh Thi has always been loved and cared for by me like my own daughter for the past eighteen years, that has not changed. My plan was never to harm her, but simply to take advantage of a legal loophole to gain the position I believe I deserve."

"You call using your daughter as a pawn, destroying the lives of two families for eighteen years, just 'taking advantage of a legal loophole'?" Bich Van stepped closer, her voice could no longer be suppressed. "Do you know what Khanh Thi had to go through, when she discovered that her entire life had been turned into part of a cold financial conspiracy by the father she trusted the most? Do you know what Han Nghi had to endure, when she realized that her mother was being used by him, then mercilessly thrown away as soon as she lost her usefulness?"

"The night I gave birth to Khanh Thi," Bich Van continued, her voice suddenly lowered, taking on a completely different tone — no longer an outburst of anger, but a question she had been waiting to ask directly for eighteen years. "You left the hospital room just a few hours after she was born, saying that there was an urgent matter with your partner. Was that the first time you met Diem Thu to discuss plans?"

Hoai Nam looked at his wife for a long time, as if considering whether there was any reason to continue denying such a small detail, when the bigger details had nothing left to hide. Finally, he nodded slightly, his voice almost a whisper. "That's right. I arranged to meet her that night, at a cafe near the hospital, to make my final proposal before she gave birth. I didn't think you would notice such a small detail after all these years."

"I pay attention to everything," Bich Van replied, her voice tight. "For the past eighteen years, I have never stopped paying attention, not even for a day."

Hoai Nam was silent for a long time, there was no answer to those questions, only his eyes wavered slightly, as if for the first time in eighteen years, he was truly facing the weight of what he had caused, not from the perspective of a strategic plan, but from the perspective of real people, real injuries.

"I don't expect your forgiveness," he finally said, his voice quieter, with less of his initial arrogance. "I know I've gone too far. But you also have to understand, eighteen years of living in the shadow of a clause that considers me forever an outsider, is not easy."

"If you feel unfair, you can completely talk frankly with me, with my father while he is still alive," Bich Van replied, her voice had now regained composure, although her eyes were still filled with pain. "Instead, you chose to secretly sabotage, take advantage of a desperate woman, exchange two innocent children, and wait for eighteen years just to carry out a cruel plot. That is not an injustice you must suffer, Hoai Nam. It is your own choice, and now, you are responsible for that choice."

She turned around and walked out of the bedroom, leaving Hoai Nam standing there alone among the unfinished suitcases, amidst the ashes of a plan that he once believed absolutely would bring him everything he desired, but in the end only brought about complete collapse - loss of position, loss of power, loss of the entire family that, despite dark motives, he had been a part of for nearly twenty years.

A few weeks later, the investigation agency officially prosecuted Ton Hoai Nam for crimes related to fraud, collusion to commit acts that violate children's rights, and stock market manipulation. He was banned from leaving the country, his personal assets were frozen to facilitate the investigation, and all shares he held, whether directly or indirectly through intermediary accounts, had his voting rights suspended until a final decision from the court.

News of the prosecution quickly spread throughout the newspapers, once again pushing Bich Van's family into the center of public attention, but this time, the public's attitude was completely different. If at the birthday party, many people were skeptical and even criticized Bich Van for remaining silent for eighteen years, now, when Hoai Nam's entire cruel plot was exposed in detail in the media, most public opinion had turned to expressing deep sympathy for her, praising the patience and bravery of a mother who had silently protected her child for nearly two decades.

Khanh Thi, upon hearing that her father was officially prosecuted, locked herself in her room all evening, refusing to see anyone, including her mother. It wasn't until late at night that she opened the door, her face was red and swollen from crying, but her eyes were somewhat calmer than the first days of panic.

"I don't know how to feel, mom," Khanh Thi said, sitting down next to Bich Van on the living room sofa. "A part of me still loves dad, still remembers the moments when he took care of me when I was little, taught me, took me out. But another part of me hates dad so much, because of what he did to mom, to aunt Thu, and even to Han Nghi."

Bich Van hugged her daughter, gently caressing her hair, her voice gentle. "You don't have to choose between those two feelings right now, honey. Both are part of the truth, and you have the right to feel both at the same time. The most important thing is that you understand that, no matter what your father has done, it does not define you, it does not diminish your value in the eyes of me or anyone who truly loves you."

Khanh Thi put her head on her mother's shoulder, letting the last tears of a painful period fall, while Bich Van hugged her child tightly, clearly feeling that, although the road ahead still had many legal and emotional challenges to overcome, at least now, the truth was no longer buried, and she and her mother could face the future together without having to carry the burden of lies.

Outside the window, it was late at night, the city lit still sparkled as usual, but for Bich Van, this was the first time in eighteen years that she felt like she could breathe fully, no longer having to play any dramatic role, no longer having to consider every word to keep a heavy secret. The road ahead was still long — there's still the trial, there's the hurt that needed to be healed, and the two daughters need time to learn to trust the world around them again — but at least, the foundation of lies had crumbled, giving way to a new beginning that, while still difficult, was more real than anything she's had in nearly two decades.
