Chapter 2 — There Is Light At The End Of The Road

I took off my high heels and walked barefoot on the burning asphalt under the noon sun. A taxi stopped in front of me. The driver stuck his head out.

"Girl, where are you going?"

I opened the car door, sat in the back seat and read the address of Kieu Na's house, my best friend.

"Please run quickly for me."

The car slowly rolled. I took out my phone from my bag. On the screen were dozens of missed calls and more than a hundred unread messages. All came from Luc Triet and his family. I coldly looked at the name Luc Triet. The world immediately became quiet. I leaned my head against the glass door, watching the scene outside the window flash backwards, my mind going back to an hour ago. The hotel's most luxurious powder room. The makeup artist is helping me complete my final makeup.

"Miss Tham, you are truly the most beautiful bride I have ever met."

I looked at myself in the mirror. Pure white wedding dress. Perfect makeup. Happy smile... So beautiful that it's fake. At that time, I truly believed I was the happiest woman in the world. At that moment, a knock on the door rang out. A hotel employee walked in and handed me a bag of documents.

"Miss Tham, this is your inner-city express delivery parcel. The recipient is Mr. Luc Triet, his phone number is also his, but we couldn't call. Seeing that the address was this room, we brought it up to help."

I frowned slightly.

"What's so urgent?"

"I don't know. The sender said... Civil Affairs Department."

My heart stopped. An ominous premonition was like cold water, and in the blink of an eye, it engulfed the whole body. I asked the makeup artist and hotel staff to go out first. The large room left me alone. Fingertips tremble slightly. I slowly tore off the seal of the file bag. Two red notebooks printed with the golden national emblem slid out of the bag. Falling down the pure white wedding dress. That red color is so dazzling it hurts. I bent down to pick it up. Husband: Luc Triet. Wife: To Van. In the photo, Luc Triet smiles gently and enchantingly. To Van obediently leaned her head on his shoulder. Registration date... Exactly three days ago. I stared at those two smiling faces for a long time. Little by little... The blood in my body seemed to freeze. While I happily tried on wedding dresses, carefully confirmed the guest list, and eagerly looked forward to our future... My fiance... Became legally husband and wife with another woman. A few days ago, he said he had to go away on business to sign an extremely important contract. That means going with Bach Nguyet Quang to the Civil Affairs Department to register their marriage. Immortal vows. The gentleness and care. The love he has for me... It's all just a carefully staged play. I don't cry. Not even a single tear could fall. I just feel... Three years of youth. Three years of sincerity. It's nothing more than a giant joke. I calmly put the two marriage certificates in my bag. Then I took out my phone and texted my maid of honor, also my best friend, Kieu Na.

"The plan has changed. Look at my face later and cooperate. Remember to help me stop the Luc family."

Done it all. I walked out of the makeup room. Still kept a dignified smile on his lips. Calmly accept each blessing from you everybody. Until the MC on stage called my name. The phone vibrated, pulling me back to reality. It's a text message from an unknown number.

"Sister Tham Du, I'm To Van. Can we talk? Things are not like you think."

After reading it, I burst into cold laughter. Not what I thought? So what is it? Am I forcing you two to register your marriage? Without hesitation, I blocked that phone number. The taxi stopped in front of Kieu Na's apartment. I paid and opened the door and walked down. Kieu Na was already waiting downstairs. As soon as she saw me, she immediately ran to hug me.

"Du Du! You scared me to death! Are you okay?"

"What could happen to me?"

I patted her back.

"It's just that the wedding dress is a bit heavy, so tight that I can't breathe."

Kieu Na helped me go upstairs. As I walked, I was so angry that I gritted my teeth.

"Luc Triet is such a bastard! And To Van too! What a pair of bitches! I just want to tear them apart!"

"Don't be angry."

I gently comforted.

"It's not worth it to harm your health because of them."

Come home. Kieu Na helped me take off the heavy wedding dress. I changed into her pajamas and lay down on the sofa. Only now... I really feel like I'm alive again. Kieu Na poured me a cup of hot water.

"What are you going to do next?"

I held a glass of water in my hand and quietly looked out the window.

"About my house and him."

"Things that belong to me..."

"One item at a time..."

"I'll take it all back."
