Chapter 10 — Unfinished Music

Updated 22/08/2026 8 min read

After that afternoon, something between the two of them calmed down, became more certain, as if Gia Bảo letting Tường Vy witness both the moment he broke down and the moment he stood up again had built an invisible bridge that both of them had previously hesitated to cross. The next training sessions went by much more smoothly, not because the fear had completely disappeared, but because now both of them knew how to face it together every time it suddenly returned.

That last Wednesday afternoon of Part II, it wasn't raining, it wasn't hot, it was just a rare gentle autumn afternoon, the wind gently blew through the curtains, bringing with it the first cold air of the season. Gia Bảo arrived at the music room on time as usual, but this time, when he entered, he felt something different in the air - Tường Vy had drawn the curtains tighter than usual, leaving only the small table lamp on the piano lid lit, and on the music stand in front of her was a brown leather-covered notebook already open, not on the page with the familiar chorus they had been practicing, but on another page, near the end of the notebook.

"Today I want to show you something," Tường Vy said, her voice a bit unusual, both nervous and serious, making Gia Bảo immediately feel the importance of this moment even though he didn't fully understand the reason. "This is the last part of the song, the part I've never let anyone hear, including you."

Gia Bảo sat down next to her, looking at the page. Unlike the previous paragraphs, which still had a few lines crossed out and edited over and over again, this paragraph was written quite neatly, as if Tường Vy thought for a long time before putting pen to paper.

"This part," she explained, gently pointing to the music, "is the part where the two voices blend together, no longer responding back and forth, but singing at the same time, with the same words. I wrote this part with the thought that, if one day this song is truly completed, this will be its most important moment — the moment two people, despite going through different paths, finally find each other on the same note."

Gia Bảo remained silent, feeling the weight of every word she said. He looked at the musical notes on the page, then looked at Tường Vy's face, seeing in her eyes a fragile expectation that she was trying to hide behind her usual calm expression.

"I won't force you to sing this part," she added, quickly as if afraid he would misunderstand. "If you're not ready, I completely understand. I just wanted to show it to you, because I think you deserve to know what all the music is that you've been practicing with me for so long."

Gia Bảo looked down at his hand on his knee, feeling his heart beat a little faster, but this time, he realized, it wasn't quite the familiar fear anymore. It was mixed with something else — a vague desire, a desire to try, to know that he could do what he had been convinced for the past three years was impossible.

"I want to try," he said, his voice slow but steady. "Not because you expect me to. But because... I think I want to see for myself whether I can sing a whole verse, without stopping, without fear, or not."

Tường Vy looked at him for a long time, then nodded slightly, without saying any more empty words of encouragement, simply placing her hands on the keys and preparing.

"This part is not difficult in terms of melody," she said, her voice gently instructing. "It's slow, with few high notes, I intentionally wrote it like that. You just need to let your voice flow with your hands, don't think about singing with the right technique at all."

She played the intro, the slow, peaceful notes rang out in the quiet room, the soft yellow light cast a warm halo on both of their faces. Gia Bảo closed his eyes, letting his mind flow with each note, trying to let go of all thoughts about what he was doing, leaving only the melody and his breath.

Then he started singing.

"If one day, I lose my own voice, please don't give up too quickly, because somewhere there is still someone, quietly waiting for me to speak..." - the song has followed him for many weeks.

His voice echoed in the small room, deep and warm, trembling in some places but not broken at all, each word was uttered completely and clearly. Tường Vy continued to accompany the piano, not singing along, letting him had complete freedom with his own voice. Her eyes followed him, both focused and emotional, not daring to breathe loudly for fear of interrupting this fragile moment.

At the transition, Gia Bảo's voice slowed down a bit, an old fear flashed through his heart, but this time, he didn't let it swallow him up. He took a deep breath, as he had practiced for weeks, and continued.

"Even though the road ahead is sometimes dark and without a way, I'm still here, a small light that has never gone out..."

The song rang out completely, not once interrupted, not once out of tune. It was not a perfect voice by vocal-technical standards; it was still a bit shaky and unstable, but it was genuine and alive, carrying within it all three long years of silence that had just been released into sound.

When the last verse of that verse ended, Tường Vy's hand just let go of the keyboard, leaving a long silence in the space, the last echoes of the notes still lingering somewhere in the air before completely disappearing.

Gia Bảo opened his eyes and gasped slightly, not because of panic, but because of the feeling that he had just experienced something too great, too profound to be able to express in words right away. He turned to look at Tường Vy, saw her staring at him, her eyes were sparkling, filled with tears but not yet falling, her lips parted as if she wanted to say something but couldn't find the words.

"I..." Gia Bảo started, his voice still shaking, "I just finished singing, right?"

"Yes," Tường Vy replied, her voice choked, a tear finally rolled down her cheek, but it was a tear of joy, not sadness. "You just finished singing, completely, without stopping once."

Gia Bảo sat quietly, letting that feeling penetrate deep into every cell in his body. Three years. For three years, he did not allow himself to sing anything completely in front of anyone. Even when he was alone in his room, he only dared to hum softly and discreetly. Yet now, in this small, dimly lit music room, in front of Tường Vy alone, he did what he thought he would never dare to do again.

"How does it feel?" Tường Vy asked softly, her voice still a little choked, her hand gently wiping away the tears on her cheek with the back of her hand.

Gia Bảo thought for a moment, trying to find the right words to describe the whirlwind of emotions swirling in his heart. "I feel... relieved. But not the kind of relief that comes from escaping something scary. It's like... like I just found a part of myself that I lost a long time ago."

"I'm very proud of you," Tường Vy said, her voice trembling but so sincere that it made Gia Bảo's chest once again swell with an indescribable warm feeling. "Not because you sing well, even though you sing really well, but because you dared to try, dared to face your own fears, even when no one forced you to do so."

They sat in silence together for a long time afterward, no one was in a hurry to break the moment with words. The table lamp still shone a familiar warm yellow halo, the window curtain was still closed, blocking all the noisy sounds of the outside world, leaving only the two of them, and the echo of a piece of music that had just been revived a little in this small room.

Gia Bảo glanced at Tường Vy, saw that she was also glancing back at him, and this time, neither of them was in a hurry to look away. Their eyes met, remaining the same for a longer period of time than ever before, carrying something unnamed, an invisible string that was silently tightening between their two hearts, not a string of fear or pressure, but a string of a deep understanding, a trust that had been built through each quiet Wednesday afternoon like this.

"You know," Tường Vy said softly, breaking the silence with a voice so gentle that it was almost a whisper, "when I wrote this piece of music, I never thought that one day I would hear it play out exactly as I imagined. I thought it would forever be just notes lying dormant in this notebook."

"So now it's no longer an 'unfinished song'," Gia Bảo said, a gentle, genuine smile on his lips, different from the usual hesitant, defensive expression over the past few months.

"Not really," Tường Vy smiled, her eyes sparkling under the soft yellow light. "It's still very unfinished, there are many parts missing, there are many things that need to be edited. But at least today, it's no longer unfinished in a way that makes me sad. It's unfinished in a way... that makes me look forward to seeing what it will become next."

Gia Bảo nodded, feeling the deep meaning in that sentence, not only about the music, but perhaps, about what was silently blooming between the two of them, unfinished, unnamed, but no longer making either of them feel afraid.

Outside the window, sunset had begun to fall, dyeing the sky a gentle orange-purple color through the small gap in the curtain that had not been fully closed. Gia Bảo looked at that halo of light, then looked back at Tường Vy's smiling face in the warm table lamp light, and he suddenly realized that this was the image he wanted to keep in his heart forever - not the harsh spotlight of fear from years past, but this gentle, warm light, the light that silently led him to find his own singing, step by step, without haste.

"Thank you," he said, his voice more sincere than ever, "for not giving up on me."

"I thank you too," Tường Vy replied, "for trusting me enough to try."

They didn't say anything more, just sat there, side by side, in the warm yellow light of the music room, listening to the sweet silence that enveloped them both, a silence that no longer had the shadow of fear or embarrassment, but only a feeling of complete peace, as if, after three long years of being out of tune, a certain note in Gia Bảo's heart had finally found its right pitch again, right here, right now, next to the person who had patiently waited through your long journey.
