Chapter 2
Chapter 2 — Bought the wrong Bac Canh Vuong
The landlady was sitting in front of the door picking vegetables. Seeing the beastman behind me, her eyes immediately widened.
“Where did you pick it up?”
“Black market.”
The vegetable leaves in her hand fell back into the pot.
"Are you crazy? I can't even pay my rent, yet you buy an orc?"
I'm a bit confused:
“I will pay on time.”
Obviously the landlady didn't believe it. She looked at me, then looked at the tall, gloomy beast behind her, lowered her voice and asked:
“He won't destroy my house in the middle of the night, right?”
Before I could answer, a very soft noise rang out from behind. The beastman's claws left three scratches on the wall. Me: “…” Landlady: “…” It seemed that even he did not expect this wall to be so weak, his movements immediately stiffened. A moment later, he calmly withdrew his hand, but his tail was quietly hidden behind his back. I quickly covered up the scratches.
“No, he's very good.”
The landlady's eyes looked at me like she was looking at a fool. Fortunately, her mouth is tough but her heart is soft. After talking for a while, she just told me to remember to fix the wall, but didn't actually chase us away. My room is on the second floor. As soon as I opened the door, the entire room appeared before my eyes. The bed is against the wall, under the window is an old table. A corner of the room is divided into a very small kitchen, next to the stove are piled a few bowls that haven't been washed yet. Suddenly I was a little embarrassed.
“The house is a bit messy.”
The beastman stood outside the door, not entering. It seemed he wasn't used to a door that wasn't chain-locked. His eyes swept around the room, finally stopping at the window. That window is very small. But the sky can be seen outside. I opened the door wider and moved aside.
“You can leave at any time.”
“Even though the contract is in my hands, I won't stop you.”
The system immediately reminded: 【He is the person you spent all your savings to buy.】 【You should at least make him work to repay it.】 I said silently in my heart:
“He is injured, how can he work?”
The system is silent. The beastman did not hear the system's words. He looked at the open door for a long time, then finally walked in and sat down on the floor closest to the door. I looked in the closet for a thin blanket. As soon as he saw me approaching, his shoulders immediately tensed. I had to put the blanket where he could reach it.
"It's cold at night, cover it up."
You don't pay attention to me. I went through the medicine box again. Inside there was only half a bottle of antiseptic, a roll of gauze and two packets of fever-reducing medicine. That's the medicine left over after I got sick last month. I squatted not far from him and pointed at his tail:
“The wound must be bandaged, otherwise it will become inflamed.”
He hid his tail behind his back.
“Is it painful?”
He still didn't speak. Since leaving the black market until now, I have never heard him say a single word. I'm not sure if he doesn't want to open his mouth, or doesn't know human language. Thinking for a moment, I rolled up my sleeve and showed him the old wound on my arm. It was a cut caused by a broken bowl when I was washing dishes at a restaurant a few days ago. The wound wasn't deep, but because I was afraid of wasting money, I didn't go to the clinic and just randomly wrapped myself in two rounds of cloth.
“You see, I'm injured too.”
“Let's change the medicine together?”
Finally he raised his eyes. I took off the fabric on my arm and poured some antiseptic. The wound is irritated The pain was burning, I couldn't help but take a breath. The beastman's ears moved slightly. My eyes hurt so much that they turned red, but I still tried to look relieved:
“It actually doesn't hurt that much.”
He looked at me for a few seconds then stuck out his tail. The dirty ice fell to the ground. The wound on the tail was more serious than I thought. A patch of hair was burned off, the wound kept cracking, showing signs of infection. The bridge of my nose stings. Afraid he would misunderstand, I quickly bowed my head to treat the wound.
“It might be a bit painful, please bear with it a little.”
He didn't struggle. Only when the antiseptic touched the wound did his tail suddenly curl up and wrap around my wrist. The force is not strong. It's like it hurts so much, I can only hold on to something. I slowed down and gently blew on his wound.
“Almost done.”
Once the tail is done, you still have your legs. But he refused to let me touch him, just gave me his tail to bandage. I don't force it. When I finished, it was very late outside. I used the last bit of flour to cook two bowls of flour soup, then cut another half of the wilted cabbage. He stared at the bowl, not moving.
“Eat.”
Afraid he would worry, I tried a bite first. At this time, the beast man brought up the bowl. He ate very quietly, but at a surprisingly fast pace. I only ate half of it, his bowl was already empty. I touched my still hungry stomach and pushed the remaining half of the bowl over.
“I ate bread this afternoon, still not hungry.”
That's a lie. Half of that loaf of bread was given to me. But he was so seriously injured, he should have eaten a little more. The beastman did not accept it immediately. He lowered his head to look at my bowl, then looked back at me. Finally, he pushed the bowl back.
“Don't eat.”
His voice was hoarse. That was the first thing he said. I was stunned for a long time, almost unable to react in time. But he turned his back, hugging the thin blanket curled up next to the door. It's like the person who just spoke up wasn't you. I ate small pieces of the soup, finished washing the dishes, and brought the old pillow from the bed to him.
“My name is Tang Ninh, what is your name?”
He closed his eyes and did not answer. I waited a while, then climbed into bed myself. In the middle of the night, I was awakened by the sound of rain. Sure enough, the roof leaked again. Rainwater dripped down through the cracks, often falling next to the bed. I sleepily sat up and looked for a basin to catch water. As soon as his feet touched the ground, they touched a layer of soft fur. The thin blanket that was originally covering the beastman's body was placed next to my bed at some unknown time. He is sitting in the leaky roof. The tail hangs across the top of the old pot, helping me block splashes of water.
03
When I woke up the next morning, he was gone. The door opened a small crack. I sat on the bed stunned for a while, feeling a bit empty inside. But very quickly I thought clearly. He was originally a free person. It's good to go. Following me would only mean not being able to eat enough, and having to live in a leaky house. I folded the thin blanket he left behind and discovered on the table two small wrinkled fruits. Looks like it was picked from a wild tree recently. The shell is not very beautiful, but has been washed very clean. I held two fruits in my hand and looked at them for a long time, unable to help but laugh. At least before leaving, he left me breakfast. I have to quickly go to work at the bakery. As I passed downstairs, the landlady called me back:
“Where did you buy the beastman?”
“Gone.”
“Gone?”
She rolled her eyes:
“Spend all your money to buy it back, boy If you want to go, will you just let me go? Has your brain been soaked by rainwater?
I said in a low voice:
“He is not an object.”
The landlady scolded me and stuffed a baked potato into my hand.
“Take it. Yesterday you only ate half a loaf of bread all day, don't faint in the middle of the road, it's not good to come back and blame it on my house."
I hugged the hot potato and seriously thanked it. She hated leaving, waving her hand, urging me to leave quickly. Work at the bakery starts early in the morning. I am in charge of kneading the dough, washing the trays, and sorting out the unsold cakes that day. The intact ones will be kept and sold at a discount the next day. Only those that are distorted, burned, or fallen to the ground are allowed to be brought home by our helpers. The shop owner is in a bad mood today. She just received notice that taxes in the city have increased again, and the shop may have to have one less employee. The assistants were all very stressed. Me too. Of the three daily jobs, the salary at the bakery is the highest. If I lose this job, next month not only will I not be able to pay the rent, but even eating will be a problem. After being busy until noon, the owner called us back.
“The store can only hold two people.”
When she spoke, she looked at me. The other two helpers both have families to support. The child of one of them is still sick. I grabbed my apron, understanding in my heart. As expected, the landlady sighed.
"Tang Ninh, you're still young, you can still find another job."
I nodded.
“Okay.”
She was a bit stunned, seemingly not expecting me to agree so quickly. Actually, I'm also very sad. But crying can't make the store's business better. I took off my apron and took the initiative to only take half a day's pay today. The owner felt guilty and stuffed me a bag of cakes that were not shaped well.
“Bring it home to eat.”
I held a paper bag and walked out of the store. The sunlight outside is very beautiful. But I don't know where I should go. The restaurant didn't start working until late in the evening, and it took three days for the accounts to be paid.
