Chapter 29 — Fire Behind the Line

Two months after the trial of Tang Huu Phat was officially sentenced with the harshest penalty according to the law, the lives of Thien Ly and Trong Khiem gradually entered a new rhythm, more stable but also full of happy moments that neither of them dared to think about in the previous dangerous days.

Trong Khiem was promoted to the position of Head of the Fire and Explosion Cause Investigation Department of the entire province, recognizing his outstanding contributions in breaking up an organized crime ring that had existed for eight years. Even though his new job requires more responsibility, he still tries to arrange time to be with Thien Ly whenever possible, even though they are both busy with their own work.

One weekend evening, when the two walked together along the riverbank near Dong Kieu old town - a place that had witnessed many ups and downs in their journey - Trong Khiem suddenly stopped, took Thien Ly's hand, his eyes took on an unusually serious look.

"You say it." She looked at him, sensing something important was about to be revealed.

"From the first day I met you at the scene of Ms. Loan's grocery store fire, I was impressed by your courage and determination." He said, his voice sincere. "But the more I accompanied you on your recent journey, the more I realized that what I felt was more than just admiration for a talented colleague. I fell in love with you, Thien Ly, loved both your strength and the deep hurts you carried, loved the way you never gave up your belief in justice no matter how much suffering it cost."

Thien Ly felt her heart beat faster, tears began to flow from the corners of her eyes because of emotion. "Trhong Khiem..."

"I know we have been through too much danger and upheaval to get to this point." He continued, got down on one knee, and took out a small box from his pocket. "But because we went through all of that together, I am more certain than ever about what I feel for you. Thien Ly, do you agree to be my wife?"

Thien Ly stood silently for a moment, her emotions so overwhelming that she couldn't speak immediately. She looked into the sincere eyes of the man who had accompanied her through every fire, every danger, every moment of pain and happiness during her journey to find the truth for her father.

"Have." She spoke, her voice shaking with emotion, tears rolling down her cheeks but they were tears of the most complete happiness she had ever felt. "Yes, I agree, Trong Khiem."

He stood up, put the ring on her finger, then hugged her, spinning in a happy circle in the middle of a deserted riverside road, under the warm yellow streetlights and the gentle sound of waves from the nearby river.

"I love you, Thien Ly." He whispered in her ear. "And I promise to always be with you, in every fire of life, whether it is the fire of danger or the fire of love."

"I love you too." She replied, resting her head on his chest, listening to his heart beat steadily and strongly, like a solid promise for the future ahead.

When news of the engagement spread, the entire Fire Brigade No. 3 was extremely happy, holding a small celebration party right at the station, with the participation of all close teammates. Ngo Bang Tam hugged Thien Ly, unable to hide her happiness for her best friend. "I knew right from the night you returned to the station soaking wet after the fire in the boarding house. Your eyes lit up every time you mentioned Mr. Khiem. This day has finally come."

Ho Manh Cuong, who has now become one of Thien Ly's closest friends after everything they've been through together, toasts with a radiant smile. "Congratulations to you two. And Mr. Khiem, you have to treat her well, otherwise our whole team won't leave it alone."

Trong Khiem smiled and put his arm around Thien Ly's shoulder, his eyes filled with happiness. "I promise to cherish her for the rest of my life, you guys can rest assured."

Mrs. Van Khanh, when she heard the news of her daughter's engagement, could not hold back her tears of happiness and hugged Thien Ly tightly. "I'm very happy for you, Ly. Your father will definitely be happy to see you find such a good man."

Viet Cuong, although initially somewhat cautious about anyone entering his sister's life, now completely trusts and loves Trong Khiem, even joking that he has another brother to learn life experiences from. "Mr. Khiem, when I become a lawyer in the future, you must accept me as your personal legal advisor for your investigation department."

Uncle Cao Van Thien and Mr. Tam Rang were also present at the small engagement party at the fire station. The wedding was held simply but cozy on an autumn afternoon, at the yard of Fire Brigade Station No. 3, the place that has been associated with Thien Ly's entire life and career. She wore a simple wedding dress, but her eyes were brighter than ever, as she walked down the aisle decorated with simple white flowers, under the witness of her family, teammates, and everyone who had gone through the difficult journey with her.

Captain Dinh, who had considered Thien Ly as his own daughter for many years, had the honor of giving her to Trong Khiem during the ceremony. His voice trembled with emotion as he spoke. "Nguyen Khai Binh once told me that what he wanted most was to see his daughter happy. Today, I believe that wish has come true."

He held Thien Ly's hand and led her through the flower-strewn walkway between two rows of comrades wearing neat uniforms standing solemnly on both sides, each holding a fire hose high to form a special honor dome dedicated to the wedding day of the comrade they always loved and respected. It was an unprecedented ritual at the station, but the whole platoon performed it unanimously, as a tribute to the arduous journey that Thien Ly went through to bring justice to her family and peace to the entire neighborhood.

The station's familiar fire truck was decorated with white ribbons and fresh flowers, parked right in the middle of the yard as a special witness to this important day - the car that had accompanied Thien Ly through countless fires, now became part of the happiest scene in her life.

When the ceremony ended, the guests gradually left, leaving only close family and teammates to clean up together. Thien Ly stood alone for a while in the deserted station yard, looking up at the starry night sky. She pulled out a small photo of her father from her wedding dress pocket, which she had always carried with her since the day the investigation began.

"Dad, I'm married." She whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks but they were tears of complete happiness. "I wish you could be here, walking me down the aisle, seeing me as happy as today. But I know, somewhere, you are always watching and proud of me."

Trong Khiem walked over, put his arm around her shoulders, and looked up at the night sky with her. "I believe your father is smiling down at us right now, Thien Ly. And I promise, I will spend the rest of my life taking care of and loving you, just like what he wanted for his daughter."

When Thien Ly and Trong Khiem exchanged vows under the golden sunset that dyed the whole station yard, she felt an unprecedented fulfillment in her heart - not just the happiness of a bride on her wedding day, but the completion of a long journey, where the pain of the past was finally transformed into the strength to build a brighter future, a future that they would continue to write together, hand in hand, with no fear to separate them anymore.
