Chapter 30
Chapter 30 — Fire Behind the Line
One year after the wedding, Thien Ly and Trong Khiem's lives have settled into a new rhythm, blending busy work and simple family happiness. They moved to a small house not far from the fire station, close enough that Thien Ly could walk to work every morning, and close enough that her mother could stop by to visit her future grandchild whenever she wanted.
That morning, as usual, Thien Ly arrived at the station earlier than the official working time, carrying a bag of hot dumplings bought at a familiar store near her home, to share with her teammates at the briefing at the beginning of the day. Fire Brigade No. 3 now has a few new members, young faces full of enthusiasm, including a female rookie who has just completed the training course, making Thien Ly unable to help but remember herself six years ago.
"Miss Ly, can I ask you something about your profession?" The young rookie, named Le Dieu Ky, timidly asked when she saw Thien Ly checking the equipment before the shift.
"Okay, feel free to ask." Thien Ly smiled, remembering her first days of confusion when entering the profession, when she had to prove herself in front of skeptical eyes because she was one of the few women on the team.
Trinh Nhat Tan, now a much more experienced firefighter than the timid young man, took on the role of guiding new recruits, following the example that Thien Ly had left for him all these years. "Miss Dieu Ky, Ms. Ly is the best on the team, not just because of her skills, but because she always puts the lives of others first, even if it means sacrificing her own safety."
Thien Ly smiled and patted the young rookie's head the way Uncle Dinh often did to her years ago. "Don't make me shy, Tan. Anyone who enters this profession will learn it, it just takes time."
Captain Dinh, whose hair was now almost white but still maintained his familiar clarity and severity, entered the meeting room, his eyes beaming when he saw the entire squad gathered together. "Today we have a special meeting before starting our shift."
He held up a large envelope and opened a new certificate of merit. "Our team was just awarded the title of Outstanding Unit by the city this year, recognizing its contributions not only in regular firefighting work, but also in helping to break up the crime ring that has caused so much suffering to this city."
The entire platoon clapped loudly, everyone filled with pride for what they had gone through and achieved together.
Ngo Bang Tam, now promoted to the position of deputy squad leader, stood next to Thien Ly, gently nudging his best friend's shoulder. "Do you remember the first day you and I entered the station? At that time, everyone thought we wouldn't last more than a year in this job."
"Remember?" Thien Ly smiled, her eyes nostalgic. "And yet it's been six years, and I still don't regret my choice for a moment."
"Me too." Bang Tam nodded, looking around the meeting room, where familiar faces and new faces were sharing common joy. "We have built a real family here, Thien Ly."
Ho Manh Cuong, who is now married with a teacher in the neighborhood, also contributed to the fun with a few humorous stories about the early days when he was still skeptical of Thien Ly, making the whole meeting room burst with laughter. "Who would have thought that the girl I once thought was overthinking was actually the one who turned over a case that seemed to have been buried forever."
That afternoon, after her shift, Thien Ly stopped by to visit her mother at the fabric stall, which has now become a familiar place, not only for customers buying fabric, but also for people in the neighborhood who often stop by to chat and review memories of a difficult past time.
"I have good news to tell mom." Thien Ly said, holding her mother's hand, her eyes sparkling with happiness.
"What news?" Mrs. Van Khanh asked, a mother's premonition made her guess somewhat.
"I'm pregnant, mom." Thien Ly said, her voice shaking with emotion.
Mrs. Van Khanh hugged her daughter, tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks. "Oh my god, I'm about to become a grandmother! Your father would definitely be very happy if he were still here."
"I believe Dad is smiling somewhere, Mom." Thien Ly replied, feeling a warmth filling her heart at the thought of a new life continuing, a cycle of love and hope overcoming the pain of the past.
In the afternoon, when Trong Khiem came to pick her up after work, Thien Ly told him the good news, watching his face light up with happiness that couldn't be expressed in words. He hugged her tightly, gently placing his hand on her belly, as if welcoming the little life about to be born.
"We are about to become parents, Thien Ly." He whispered, his voice filled with emotion. "I can't believe how lucky I am, to have you and now our whole little family."
That evening, the two walked together to the memorial park where Vinh Thinh warehouse used to be, standing in front of the stone stele engraved with Thien Ly's father's name under the sunset that dyed the sky yellow.
"Dad, I'm about to become a mother." Thien Ly said, placing her hand on the stone stele, her voice filled with emotion. "I promise to tell my child about his grandfather, about his courage and integrity, so that he will always be proud of his roots."
Trong Khiem stood next to her, put his arm around his wife's shoulders, and looked towards the memorial sparkling in the late sunlight. "Our children will grow up knowing that their grandfather was a true hero, who sacrificed his life for justice, and knowing that his mother is also a hero, who never gave up her belief in justice."
On the way back to the fire station to prepare for the evening shift, Thien Ly looked towards the familiar building that had been associated with her whole life - where she learned the meaning of courage from her deceased father, where she found true love amid days full of danger, and where she will continue to contribute and continue to protect those who need to be protected, just like the oath she engraved in her heart from the first day she entered the profession.
The light from the fire station shines into the yard, warm and steady like a lighthouse in the heart of Hoa Trach city. The red fire truck still stands there, ready for any emergency call, symbolizing the never-back-down spirit of those who have chosen this career as a lifelong mission.
Thien Ly entered the station, put on her familiar uniform, fully feeling the meaning of the family she had found here - not only a blood family with her mother, with Cuong, and with her soon-to-be born child, but also a family chosen, bonded by camaraderie, by courage, and by a common belief in protecting lives and the most precious values of life.
Before starting her shift, she stopped for a moment by the dressing room door, where she had kept her old notebook in her personal locker for the past six years. She opened the drawer and looked at the worn leather notebook one last time before closing it, not to continue recording her doubts and suffering like before, but to keep it as a precious testament to a journey that had come to a complete end.
She thought of the child growing in her womb, of the stories she would tell him about her grandfather, about her journey to find the truth, about the love that blossomed amid dangers, and about a city that stood together against darkness to protect its best values. She understands that, although the next generation may never have to go through what she did, the spirit of courage, integrity, and belief in justice that her father passed down will forever be the flame that lights the way for every generation of her family.
The fire of the past, the fire that took away her father eight years ago, is now fully understood, has crossed the line of pain and injustice to become the fire of memory, of gratitude, and of passing on an indomitable spirit to the next generations. And a new fire, the fire of love, of hope, of a family being built, is now burning brightly in Thien Ly's heart, illuminating the way for a beautiful future waiting ahead, at the very place where all her journeys began - Fire Brigade No. 3, Hoa Trach city.
