Chapter 13 — I Return From The Deep

Updated 10/08/2026 3 min read

The chemical bottle label——the record of the person in charge on it can prove that Tong Uyen Nghi frequently went in and out of the laboratory during that time, completely contradicting her statement of "knowing nothing".

“When will she destroy it?”

“Someone will come clean tomorrow morning.”

“Can you take some pictures and send them to me?”

"I took a photo... but I don't dare send it to you directly. In case she checks her phone——"

"Do you have WeChat? I will ask someone to make friends. A person named Lawyer Chau, you can send him a photo. He is a professional and will protect your personal information."

She hesitated for two seconds. "Okay. I'll make friends."

“Trinh Vu Dong.” I called her back, “Thank you.”

“Don't thank me.” Her voice became even quieter, "I... I just feel that Ms. Trieu is a very good person. Even though she was no longer there when I enrolled, the upperclassmen in the lab all said she was the best instructor. I don't want to see her things destroyed by that woman."

Hang up the phone. I immediately texted Lawyer Chau and informed him of the situation. Then call Luc Tham again.

"There was a student who agreed to provide internal evidence. But tomorrow morning Tong Uyen Nghi will clean up the remaining documents."

Luc Tham stopped for a moment. “What do you want to do?”

“Can the council be asked to add the sealing scope today?”

“Today?” He checked the time, "It's already 4pm, the administrative block ends at 5pm."

“What about Lawyer Chau?”

“Let me ask him.”

Five minutes later, Luc Tham called back.

"Lawyer Chau said there was no time to follow the official procedure. But tonight he can send an urgent letter to the chairman of the board, attaching evidence photos of Trinh Vu Dong, requesting additional sealing immediately tomorrow morning."

"Is it on time? What time will the movers arrive?"

“This depends on what time Tong Uyen Nghi arranges.”

Bet again. It's a bet again.

“There is another way,” Luc Tham said.

“What way?”

"Don't go on official routes. Report directly to the police."

I was stunned. “For what crime?”

"Destroying evidence. Criminally. The board's review process has established records, the laboratory is in the area related to the case. Intentionally destroying relevant documents during the review process, constitutes the crime of obstructing the performance of official duties or destroying evidence."

I closed my eyes. Report to the police. Four years ago, Tong Uyen Nghi used the method of reporting to the police and had me thrown in jail. Four years later, I could also have called the police to pin her to death on the spot.

“Call?” Luc Tham asked.

“Call.”

That evening, Lawyer Chau submitted reporting documents to the Lam Hai City Police Department on my behalf. At the same time, Wen Ruoc Duong, as a member of the academic review expert panel, sent a dispatch requesting investigation support to the university's security department. Both sides act at the same time. It's two in the morning, I still haven't slept. Not insomnia. It's a severe cough. The bathroom light was bright, I squatted next to the toilet, coughing mouthful after mouthful. The mouth smells like rust. Spit out, dark red lumps. No more blood stains. It's a blood clot. I grabbed the sink and stood up, looking at my face in the mirror. Pale white, haggard. What the doctor said two months before diagnosing sprains ringing in my ears——”6 months at most.” It's been almost 2 months. 4 months left. Fuck? I do not know. Flush the blood in the toilet and wash your hands. Return to bed and lie down. Staring at the ceiling. Miss Trieu, please wait a little longer. Almost done. The next morning, at 8 o'clock. The police arrived before the movers. Luc Tham transmitted the news from the scene——three police officers were present in room 407 at 7:40 a.m., presented papers to solve the case, and sealed the entire laboratory for the second time.
