Chapter 3
Chapter 3 — My Arch-Nemesis Cried at My Wedding
Lu Yan Chen, be clear about this: what I did was intended to destroy you, not to be kind to you.
I know.
Then why don't you want to destroy anyone else? It only proves that in your heart, I am special.
What kind of twisted logic is that?
Niem Niem, give me a chance.
His voice suddenly softened, losing all the sharp, ruthless edge he was known for in the cutthroat world of business.
If you divorce him, the dowry I will give you will be unrivaled in this entire city.
My interest was piqued. What kind of dowry?
The Western District development project.
And what else?
Two additional procurement contracts for the new district.
What else?
He cleared his throat and began to list more. Inside, I was ecstatic; the reward fund was skyrocketing.
Six luxury properties under my name, three hundred million in cash savings, and fifteen percent of the Lu family corporate shares currently in my possession.
I nearly fell off my bed. Lu Yan Chen, have you been drinking?
I have not.
Then you have truly gone insane.
I am perfectly rational.
There was a trace of almost imperceptible pleading in his tone, yet he remained slow, steady, and entirely serious as he negotiated with me. Niem Niem, divorce him—will you?
I fell silent for a long moment, then uttered the most provocative words of my life.
I will, but you must offer more. This is not enough.
The person on the other end of the line seemed to exhale a heavy burden of relief. I heard the distinct sound of him opening his laptop. Very well, I will draft the agreement immediately.
The next morning, I received a barrage of electronic contracts. Lu Yan Chen was genuinely attempting to transfer his entire net worth to me. I stared at the screen for ten minutes before finally dialing Zhang Dian.
Dian, let me tell you something.
What is it?
Lu Yan Chen thinks I got married yesterday.
There was silence for five seconds, followed by a roar of laughter that sounded like a squealing pig. Hahahaha! He thinks you married me?
Yes, since we both carry the surname Zhang, he must have misheard. He asked me if I could get a divorce. Last night, I assumed he was drunk, so I demanded a fortune from him. When I woke up this morning, he had sent me a mountain of gift agreements—essentially his entire estate.
I paused, and she broke into laughter again.
Wait, doesn't this mean you have hit the jackpot overnight? You have swindled Lu Yan Chen magnificently; this is deeply satisfying.
I haven't signed them yet.
Sign them! Why wouldn't you?
Zhang Dian sounded as excited as if she had found gold on the street. How many projects has that man snatched away from you over the years? This time, make him cough it all up! Treasure, this is rightfully yours to begin with!
I mused for three seconds before signing every single document. After all, I was not actually married; I would just play along with his delusional version of a divorce. By the time he realizes the truth, there will be nothing he can do. He offered it voluntarily, and it was a perfectly legal transaction. Once the money is in my pocket, it is mine. There is no chance I am giving it back.
Over the next three days, Lu Yan Chen fulfilled every procedure for the Western District project and the two new procurement contracts with startling speed. The efficiency was so high I suspected he had prepared the paperwork long ago.
He sent me a message: Have you received the dowry?
I replied: I have.
He wrote: So, when will you finalize the divorce?
I typed: What is the rush? I need to think about it. I just got married; divorcing during my honeymoon is bad luck. I might be struck by lightning.
He sent: ...
He wrote: Zhang Niem Niem, what if you are lying to me?
I replied: If I am lying, I will bark like a dog.
He wrote: You said that once before, and you lied to me anyway.
I replied: That was merely professional competition. All is fair in war.
He sent: ...
He wrote: I will wait for you. And you must video call me before you go to sleep. You are not allowed to sleep with your husband; otherwise, I will not be at ease.
I could not care less whether he was at ease or not. The money was mine now. Even if I used his funds to hire ten male models to cater to my every whim tonight, he wouldn't be able to do a thing about it. It is legally mine, understood?
