Chapter 4
Chapter 4 — My Wet Jackfruit Mermaid
10
My job is quite special, it's easy to offend others. Finally, they couldn't stand it anymore and sent someone to assassinate me. When the assassin climbed in from the window, I was sitting on the sofa, with a cup of cold coffee on the tea table. Seeing him, I am not afraid:
“This uninvited guest, I hope you come to pay the protection fee.”
The assassin laughed coldly:
“Does our upright and fair prosecutor also receive a protection fee?
“What, do I look like someone carrying money?”
I smiled softly.
“All humans have desires, no one cannot be bribed.”
I leaned against the back of the sofa and crossed my legs.
“Either you didn't give enough, or the things you gave weren't right.”
My eyes slid from his chest to his waist. Being evaluated by me without hiding it, he finally understood what "protection fee" meant, and became embarrassed and angry:
“Hey!”
At this moment, the friction sound of the fish's tail gliding across the floor rang out. On Lan swam to my side. He stopped next to my feet, then slowly bent down, obediently resting his head on my thigh. Silver hair falls over my knees, tassels of broken diamonds swaying. My fingers naturally fell into his hair, gently combing it. The assassin froze.
“Mermaid? Why do you have a mermaid?
“Aren't you pushing the Deep Blue Act?”
I raised my eyes, my fingers continued to run through On Lan's hair.
“Are you guys really worried about the Deep Blue Act?
“Once implemented, buying and selling mermaids will be banned. That means mermaids will become even more scarce.”
I let On Lan sit on my lap, his face pressed against my collarbone. I reached out and gently lifted his chin. His eyelashes trembled, his expression a bit dreamy. I keep saying:
“You think those people want mermaids?
“No, what they want is scarcity.
“Only when the object is rare enough are they willing to pay, and the price is unimaginable.
“Looking a little further, we can see clearly who our real target customer group is.”
I looked towards the assassin.
“Sooner or later someone will do the promotion of the Deep Green Act.
“Only by quickly arranging people to take this position can we prevent people and organizations that truly have that mindset from appearing.
“It's very clear, I am that person.”
He didn't answer, perhaps it was difficult for him to digest this information.
“I don't know who sent you, but that person probably hasn't entered the core layer yet, just wanted to please their superiors, almost messing up their arrangements.”
The tip of On Lan's nose rubbed the hollow of my neck. He raised his head and gently bit my chin, looking like he couldn't wait any longer. I reached out and hugged the mermaid's waist:
“If you don't intend to join, please leave.
“We will be very busy next.”

The assassin hesitated for a moment, but ultimately chose to leave. The next second, gunshots rang out. He turned around in disbelief, only to see my hand pressing the mermaid into his lap. The other hand is holding a white smoking gun. I walked up to him and casually kicked his gun away. Then I searched for his phone and grabbed his hair to recognize his face.
“You… lied?” His eyes disappeared, but he still stared at me, "You clearly know what is most beneficial, why..."
I flipped through my phone, not even giving him a look.
“I just said it.
“If I don't, this position will arranged for your people.
“So I am forced to stand here.”
Turning to the orderly, I put the phone on the ground.
“Don't worry, your big brother will come see you sooner or later.”
If you want to be a good person, you have to be more cruel than a bad person, otherwise you won't be able to do it. After he completely stopped moving, I picked up the phone to call.
“Tham Thanh, come one day, my family has a courier that needs to be handled.”
Tham Thanh's voice was vague and unclear:
“Do you know what time it is?”
I raised my hand to look at the clock:
“Fourteen past two in the morning.”
She scolded me and then hung up. As soon as I put down the phone, I turned around and saw On Lan standing behind me. He lifted a piece of fish scale and handed it over. I hesitantly accepted it. The scales were cool, shining with a pearly sheen.
“What's wrong?” I asked.
He bowed his head, not looking into my eyes. Seeing that I had taken it, the mermaid turned around and ran away, jumping into the lake. I lowered my head to look at the scale, wondering in my heart: What does that mean? The afterglow swept over the unfinished body on the ground, and I laughed to myself. What else could it mean? Of course it's fear. I just killed someone right in front of him. It's not fear, maybe it's shame?

I'm about to move house, to a place with a more complete security system. After Tham Thanh found out, he scolded me.
“If I knew you wanted to move home, I wouldn't have handled it so cleanly.”
Each piece of furniture is wrapped in protective film and then shipped outside. At first, On Lan wanted to stop him. I told him these were for moving, he started harassing me. Sometimes he used his tail to wrap around the table lamp, sometimes he lay on the sofa that was about to be moved. The worker looked at me awkwardly.
“On Lan, please go aside, don't sit on the furniture that has to be moved.”
He looked at me with pity, slid off the sofa, and moved to the tea table. But the tea table also had to be moved, and he was kicked out again. By afternoon, the house was basically empty. When I was checking to see if I had missed anything, I saw On Lan lying right in the middle of the living room. He lay flat, his tail straight, even his tail fin deliberately spread out. The whole living room was empty, he was lying there, standing out unusually. Like he was afraid I'd forget to bring him along. I went over and wanted to ask him what was wrong.
“Bump thump thump.”
The sound of a tail slapping on the floor rang out. I stopped walking, and his tail also stopped. I took another step, my tail started flapping again.
“Stop playing, Wen Lan.” I squatted next to him.
