Chapter 1
Chapter 1 — One Good Day I Married Someone Else
At the company's mid-year party, my best friend invited her famous grandmother who is talented in reading hexagrams. Grandmother kindly looked at Dung Tham and me and agreed to read a hexagram for us. The atmosphere at the scene was immediately lively, everyone shouted at the same time:
“Look at the wedding date! Look at the wedding date!”
My heart also beat like a drum, smiling at the man next to me. But Dung Tham turned around and led the female assistant in front of her grandmother. His voice was gentle but firm:
"Then please help her see, when will her mother's health completely recover?"
The whole hall was stunned. The female assistant's cheeks immediately turned red. She raised her head to look at him, her eyes filled with surprise and emotion. My best friend leaned close to my ear and gritted his teeth in anger:
“What kind of attack is Dung Tham having?”
“My grandmother has only read one hexagram for ten years, but today she came specifically for you two.”
I tried to suppress the bitter feeling in my eyes, smiled and patted her hand. I took off the ancient bronze coin I had worn around my neck for ten years and knelt down in front of my grandmother.
“Grandma, you once agreed with me that this coin can be exchanged for one hexagram.”
“I want to see the wedding date.”
... Obviously Dung Tham was stunned for a moment, then immediately walked over quickly and bent down to help me stand up. On his face was still a gentle smile without any flaws, only his voice was slightly reproachful:
“Sam Sam, what are you doing?”
"Today is the company's annual party, grandma came to help cut the ribbon for good luck. Why are you openly asking about private matters in front of everyone?"
I looked over his shoulder, looking at the female assistant Trieu Tinh who was always hiding behind him with her head bowed. I curled my lips slightly.
"So assistant Trieu's mother's health is not a personal matter?"
Dung Tham shook his head, his expression surprisingly calm.
“Of course not.”
"Tieu Trieu is about to be transferred to Australia, preparing to establish a branch abroad with me."
"This project is extremely important to the company. Her mother's health is not good, she will not be able to devote herself to work. If something goes wrong, the company will suffer huge losses."
Or give a sentence for the company. Or for a calm and upright look. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. He didn't seem to notice my strangeness. He gently held my hand and smiled softly:
“Besides, grandma said before that she would only read one hexagram.”
"You keep insisting that grandma break the rules and read one more hexagram, aren't you making things difficult for her? Be good, don't make trouble."
"Dung Tham, you..." Long Tinh was so angry that he was about to get angry.
“It's okay.”
My grandmother, who had always been silent, suddenly raised her hand to stop my best friend. Her eyes were sharp as torches, the corners of her lips carried a meaningful smile.
“Don't make things difficult.”
“This hexagram, please show Sam Sam.”
Dung Tham frowned slightly, clearly a bit surprised, turned to look at his grandmother:
“Grandma, that's not according to the rules…”
“Dung Tham.” Grandma interrupted him, her voice calm but with dignity.
“There are three things you should not read when looking at the hexagram: don't read birth, old age, sickness and death, don't read forced cause and effect, don't read it, don't read it if you're not sincere and don't believe it.”
She pointed to Trieu Tinh and calmly said:
"If your body is not healthy, go see a doctor. Praying for fortune-telling is just an ordinary person causing trouble."
Trieu Tinh's face became even redder. She quickly raised her eyes to look at Dung Tham, His fingers grabbed the hem of his vest behind him and pulled gently.
“Boss.” Her voice was small and soft.
"It's okay, as long as you have such a heart, I'm already very touched. I'll go down first."
Dung Tham looked at her back, a complex, hard-to-recognize emotion flashed through his eyes. At this moment, my best friend breathed a sigh of relief and fiercely glared at Dung Tham. Grandma took my hand and put the still-warm old coin back on my neck.
"Little girl, that coin was worn by my grandmother since she was born. She said it could prevent a disaster in exchange for a wish."
“Just keep it, wait until you really encounter an insurmountable barrier, then take it down and find me.”
She raised her head, her eyes became serious.
"But you have to think carefully. Once the hexagram moves, the destiny will come true."
“As long as you show me the wedding date, I am obligated to get married on that date.”
“Are you sure you want to see it?”
Everyone's eyes were focused on me. Dung Tham pulled me back again. There was rarely a trace of panic in his voice.
“Sam Sam, stop making trouble, come down with me quickly.”
I pushed his hand away and said seriously:
“I'm sure.”
Grandma looked at me deeply. She put the coin into the turtle shell, clasped her hands, and recited the mantra.
“The sky is round and the earth is square, nine chapters of the law. Money asks for directions, good and evil manifest themselves.”
The coins fell onto the red wooden table, emitting a clear sound. Grandma looked at the hexagram, raised her eyebrows slightly, then relaxed.
“Que Can becomes Thien, turns into Thien Phong Cau.”
“Little girl, listen carefully.”
“Next month, on the sixteenth day of the lunar calendar, is the day Thien Duc meets, the Hong Loan star moves, extremely auspicious for weddings.”
"If you get married on this day, all past problems will be erased. For the rest of your life, husband and wife will be in harmony, with a hundred taboos."
The music in the banquet hall rang out again. Dung Tham led me back to my seat.
“The sixteenth day of the lunar calendar... eighteen days left.”
“Sam Sam, it seems that grandma is really anxious to marry you off.”
He tilted his head.
“But you also know, the branch preparations are at an important stage, there is basically no time to hold a wedding.”
"You also don't want to marry me lightly, right?"
I said:
“But grandma said…”
“Do you believe whatever grandma says?”
He smiled slightly, interrupting me.
"Reading hexagrams is just for luck. Sam Sam, we are all people who have received a good education."
I frowned, looking at him a bit incredulously. Even though she is my best friend's grandmother, to me she is no different from my biological grandmother, the elder who watched Long Tinh and I grow up. From the first time we met, Dung Tham showed great respect for her. Unexpectedly, his true thoughts were like that. After the annual party ended, Dung Tham went to get the car. Grandma pulled me aside and leaned in to give me a few words. I nodded and said:
“Don't worry, Grandma, I know what I'm doing.”
At this point, she happily patted me and turned to get into Long Tinh's car. Before leaving, Long Tinh lowered the window, stuck his head out and called me:
"Sam Sam! Call me tomorrow, I'll go choose a wedding dress with you!"
I smiled and waved:
“Okay!”
When I returned home it was midnight. As soon as he entered the door, Dung Tham went straight to the bathroom.
“Sam Sam, I'm so tired today, I'm going to take a shower before."
At the same time, the phone screen he conveniently tossed on the tea table suddenly lit up. The screen was still unlocked, a new message popped up on WeChat. The sender's account name is "Trieu Tieu My", in front of the nickname there is a yellow heart. My heart suddenly skipped a beat. Over the years, everyone in your contacts, including me, have been coldly saved as "departments with names". There have never been any special symbols. As if possessed by a ghost, I clicked to open the chat box. The new message sent is a photo.
