Chapter 23 — Passionate About A Twisted Love

Three months after the kidney transplant surgery, Ms. Vu Thi Anh Tuyet returned to the hospital for the most important routine follow-up examination, a comprehensive check to see if her body had fully adapted to the new kidney. Nha Dan and Thien Lam were present early in the morning, sitting quietly outside the clinic, hand in hand waiting for the results with the same nervousness as on the surgery day last year.

After nearly an hour of careful examination, the head doctor came out, his face beaming with a smile. "Congratulations, your kidney function indicators are at a very good level, completely stable. You can return to normal activities, just need to maintain a healthy diet and have regular check-ups every six months."

Nha Dan hugged her mother, tears of joy rolling down her cheeks, her shoulders shaking with each gasp as if she had just relieved a heavy burden from a long journey filled with anxiety and worry. "Mom's fine, she's really fine again."

Mrs. Anh Tuyet stroked her daughter's hair, her eyes filled with love. "It's all thanks to you, Nha Dan. Without your sacrifice and resilience, I wouldn't have been able to get here today."

Thien Lam stood next to him, smiled at the mother and daughter, then made a suggestion. "Auntie, after you have completely recovered, I would like to invite you to move to live near Thao Dien villa, so that it will be easier to take care of you and visit you more often. I have found a lovely small house not far away, a quiet space, suitable for you to recuperate."

Mrs. Anh Tuyet was touched by the thoughtfulness of her future son-in-law and nodded in agreement after refusing for a while because she was afraid of causing trouble. Just two weeks later, Nha Dan's small family officially moved to a new house, ending the long years of living in a cramped, deprived room, closing a chapter full of hardship in the lives of mother and daughter to open a new, more complete and peaceful page.

During this time, Nha Dan's graphic design career also began to flourish significantly. No longer struggling to worry about money, her mind was much more at ease. She received many bigger projects, including a contract to design a brand identity for a chain of newly opened art galleries in the city center. Thien Lam always fully supports her work, even personally remodeling a private room in the villa into a studio full of natural light, where she can unleash her creativity without being constrained.

"You don't have to do that much." Nha Dan said that when she first entered the renovated room, her eyes were surprised by the easels, color boxes, and a large board filled with her old sketches that he had silently collected from the old room before it was returned to the homeowner.

"I want you to have a place that's truly yours, to pursue your passion without having to worry about anything else." Thien Lam replied, his eyes gently looking at her passionately admiring every little corner of the new room. "The dream of little girl Dan in the past was to become an artist. I want to contribute a small part to help her reach it."

Also during this time, Quynh Chi's investigative series on the Cao Nguyen Thinh case was awarded the most prestigious journalism award of the year, recognizing her courage and dedication in pursuing the truth to the end. During the award ceremony, Quynh Chi gave special thanks to Nha Dan, her close friend who trusted her to share her family's heartbreaking story, contributing to bringing an unjust case lasting more than a decade to justice.

To mark the complete reconciliation between the two families, Thien Lam organized an intimate party at Thao Dien villa, inviting all important members of both sides: Ms. Anh Tuyet, Cao Tuyet Mai, Cao Viet Hung, and several other close relatives. This is the first time in twelve years that two families who once fought each other fiercely could sit at the same banquet table in a cozy, harmonious atmosphere.

Cao Tuyet Mai, at the party, stood up, raised her glass of wine, her emotional voice was completely different from the sharp, cold look of the day. "I want to take this opportunity to once again apologize to Ms. Anh Tuyet and Nha Dan for all my thoughtless words and actions during the past time. I let hatred cloud my reason, causing a lot of hurt to her. From today, I hope we can truly become a family, working together to foster the happiness of Thien Lam and Nha Dan."

Ms. Anh Tuyet stood up, raised her glass in response, her voice was also full of emotion. "About the past, I think we should let it rest in peace. The most important thing now is to look to the future, the happiness of our children. I'm very happy to see that Nha Dan found a good man, a family that loves and cares for her."

The whole banquet table echoed with the sound of clinking glasses, sincere smiles completely replaced the tension and anticipation that had covered every meeting between the two families before, a scene that twelve years ago, none of those present dared to believe that they would one day witness. Nha Dan sat between her mother and Thien Lam, looking around the banquet table, her heart was filled with a feeling of complete happiness that she had never dared to dream of since the day her father passed away.

After the party, Cao Viet Hung pulled Nha Dan to a private corner and gave her a small wooden box. "These are some of Mr. Nghi's mementos that I still keep, including a few letters he wrote to your father but could not send before he passed away, expressing his regret and desire to apologize for misunderstanding his friend. I think you should keep them, as a belated apology from Mr. Nghi himself."

Nha Dan received the box, her hands shaking with emotion. That evening, when she was alone, she opened those letters to read. Each line of Mr. Cao Dinh Nghi's words was filled with regret and the deep friendship that the events of the past had cruelly separated. In an unfinished letter, he recounted the beautiful memories of his youth with Mr. Bao, the business trips away from home, the nights the two of them stayed up discussing plans to build a company from the days when they had nothing, and the endless torment when realizing that he had trusted the wrong person, indirectly pushing his best friend into a cycle of unfair labor. She understood that, although it was late, these sincere apologies helped her completely let go of the last resentment left in her heart.

A few days later, Nha Dan and Thien Lam brought those letters to Mr. Vu Dinh Bao's grave, reading each word aloud to him as a sacred reconciliation ritual between two souls who were once close friends, separated by the evil plot of a third person. They also stopped by Mr. Cao Dinh Nghi's grave, placed a bouquet of white chrysanthemums on it, and lit incense respectfully as a belated thank you for the sincere friendship he had given Nha Dan's father twenty years before the incident. The afternoon wind gently blew through, bringing with it a feeling of serenity, as if both men in the nine streams were also smiling as they witnessed their children and grandchildren finding happiness, completely resolving the enmity that had lasted for more than a decade.

In the evening, returning to the villa, Nha Dan stood on the balcony, looking out at the garden that was being renovated according to the original purple bougainvillea garden of the past. The newly planted shoots were gradually taking root, promising a brilliant flower season to come. Thien Lam walked over, put his arm around her shoulder from behind, and they both quietly looked at the garden in the sunset that dyed the sky purple.

"In just a few weeks, the bougainvillea will bloom in time for our wedding." Thien Lam spoke softly, his voice filled with anticipation.

"I can't wait any longer." Nha Dan smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder, her heart was filled with happiness and peace, a feeling of completeness that after many years of suffering injustice and suffering, she had finally found it again.

She looked down at the sparkling engagement ring on her finger, then looked at the old sandalwood bracelet that was always worn on her other wrist, two mementos of the same man, fourteen years apart but with the same sincere heart that had never changed. She thought to herself, perhaps fate had always prepared a detour full of thorns for her and Thien Lam, but in the end, that road still led them back to each other, more complete and stronger than ever.
