Chapter 25
Chapter 25 — Puppets Under the Lights
The remaining ten days before the factory was officially handed over to the new owner passed in a busy but meaningful cycle. Minh Long, with the help of Diem My, Tuan Anh, and several club members who volunteered to help on the weekend, completed the classification and packaging of all remaining puppets and tools in the workshop.
The selected puppets and tools to take home — including the first carp puppet Minh Long made himself, the newly completed dragon puppet, some of his most favorite carving tools, and a precious diary — were carefully arranged in a small corner of Minh Long's living room, where his father had added a simple but solemn wooden shelf for display.
The rest, about fifteen puppets and some basic tools, were carefully packed to bring to school, preparing for the official award ceremony that Mr. Phuc planned to organize, combined with the final practice session before the whole club entered the sprint stage to prepare for the district-level cultural festival.
The awarding ceremony took place on a Friday afternoon, at the school's lake area, where Minh Long's journey with the club began many months ago. Teacher Phuc stood in front of the entire club, along with the presence of Minh Long's parents, invited as honored guests.
"Today, we have a special moment," said Mr. Phuc, his voice filled with emotion. "Vu Minh Long's family decided to give the club a part of the valuable legacy of artist Vu Dinh Tai - the person who devoted his whole life to preserving and developing the art of water puppetry, and who laid the foundation for our club to exist today."
Minh Long walked up and stood next to the temporary display shelf set up for the ceremony, where the puppets were arranged neatly and beautifully. He looked out at the whole club, at the familiar faces that had accompanied him throughout his past journey, and felt an indescribable emotion welling up in his heart.
"This puppet," he said, holding up an old Uncle Teu puppet, the first version he made for the club many years ago, "is the first gift my grandfather gave to the club, when the club was just established, with almost nothing. He once said, no matter how small a club is, as long as it has real passion, it will always find a way to survive and develop."
He continued to introduce each puppet, telling the stories behind them, his voice full of pride but unable to hide his emotions. When he told the story of the newly completed dragon puppet — which was now brought home instead of being given away, because it was an item of great personal significance — many club members, especially those who had witnessed his journey from the beginning, could not hold back their tears.
"I want to thank everyone," Minh Long said, concluding his speech, "for giving me a reason to return to the art my grandfather loved most. These puppets will now continue to live, not only in the memories of my family, but in the hands and hearts of all of you, the next generations who will preserve and develop it."
The applause rang out loudly, many parents present could not hide their emotions at that touching story. Minh Long's mother stood in the front row, tears rolling down her eyes but her face beaming with a proud smile, and his father, although still keeping his usual quiet expression, could not hide his emotional eyes as he looked at his son standing there, much more confident and mature than the withdrawn, miserable boy of eight months ago.
After the ceremony, when everyone gradually dispersed, Diem My came to Minh Long and held his hand. “You just did something wonderful,” she said, her eyes filled with pride. "I think today, not only did the club receive a precious gift, but our whole school also heard an inspiring story about preserving heritage."
"I think, this is just the beginning," Minh Long replied, looking towards the display corner where his puppets now have a new home. "There's also the county festival, and I think, with everything we've been through, we're going to do something really special."
Teacher Phuc approached and patted Minh Long on the shoulder, his eyes full of respect. "I have to say, Long, your journey over the past few months has been one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed in my teaching career. From a withdrawn, miserable student, you have become a passionate young teacher, inspiring an entire generation of students. Mr. Tai would certainly be very proud."
Hearing those words, Minh Long felt a profound completeness spread throughout his heart. He looked out at the lake area, where the sunset was dyeing the calm water surface orange, the puppets were neatly arranged on the shore, and Diem My stood next to him, still holding his hand tightly. Part V of that journey of healing and growth, despite experiencing many challenges and pain, is now closing in peace and hope, paving the way for the final chapter, where the stage lights will once again light up, welcoming the biggest, most meaningful performance the whole club has ever had the opportunity to perform.
That evening, after sending Diem My home, Minh Long returned and saw his parents sitting in the living room, admiring the small display corner that had just been completely arranged. He sat down next to them, all three quietly looked at the puppets placed solemnly on the wooden shelf, the warm yellow light shining down, creating a peaceful scene different from the tension and gloom that had enveloped the house over the past few weeks.
"Thank you, Mom and Dad," Minh Long said, breaking the silence. "For listening, for agreeing with my proposal, even though I know it's not easy for you and me."
"It's us who should thank you," his father replied, his voice unusually warm. "If it weren't for you, we probably would have sold everything without thinking about keeping any meaningful part. You taught us a valuable lesson about how, sometimes, the true value of something lies not in how much it can be sold for, but in what it represents."
Minh Long's mother nodded, leaning her head on her husband's shoulder. Her eyes were still filled with tears but filled with peace. "He's definitely smiling down on us right now," she said softly. "He always believes that family is the most important thing, more important than the career he loves. Seeing our whole family overcome this together, finding solutions together, I think that's what he wants most."
The three sat together for a while longer in the living room, not saying much, just enjoying the rare peace after a turbulent period. Before going to the bedroom, Minh Long stopped in front of the display corner, gently touching the first small carp puppet he ever made, now placed in the most solemn position, right in the center of the entire corner shelf.
"Thank you," he whispered, "for giving me all of this — not just the technique, but the love, the way of looking at life. I promise to keep it, to pass it on, the way you taught me." He stood there for a moment longer, letting the warm memories settle in his heart, before going up to his room, preparing for a good night's sleep, full of hope for what lay ahead.
In the room, before turning off the lights, Minh Long took out his phone and reviewed the photos taken at this afternoon's award ceremony - the image of the whole club standing around the display corner, the image of Diem My smiling brightly while holding the uncle Teu puppet, the image of his mother with tears in her eyes with pride. He saved it all in a special memories folder, along with other photos he took throughout his journey, creating a living album documenting his entire healing and growth process.
He texted a short message to Diem My before going to sleep: "Thank you for today, and for all the days before that. I think I'm ready for the district festival." Just a few minutes later, she replied: "Me too. We will make things happen, I'm sure of that." Minh Long smiled, put down his phone, turned off the light, fell asleep with a relieved and hopeful heart, ready to enter the final chapter of this meaningful journey, a journey that taught him that loss and love, although parallel, are never truly mutually exclusive.
