Chapter 29 — Puppets Under the Lights

The graduation exam went more smoothly than Minh Long imagined, largely thanks to Diem My's careful preparation during the previous weeks of intense review. Both achieved good results and were eligible to apply to the university they had chosen together - a large pedagogical university in the city, not too far from home so that they could still regularly return to visit their families and the club.

Nguyen Du School's graduation ceremony was held on an early summer morning, under a clear blue sky without a single cloud. The schoolyard was brightly decorated with flags and flowers, and all grade 12 students dressed in formal uniforms, lined up neatly waiting for the important moment marking the end of their student life.

Minh Long stood in line, looking around the schoolyard, where he experienced so many emotional ups and downs during this senior year — from the pain of loss, to the arduous journey of healing, to budding love, and even proud successes with the club. He found Diem My standing not far away, in her class's row, and exchanged a warm smile across the distance.

In his opening speech, the principal mentioned many outstanding achievements of the school in the past school year, and especially spent a long paragraph talking about the Water Puppet Club, about the journey from the brink of dissolution to winning the "Best performance" award at the district cultural festival, considering it a typical testament to the school students' spirit of overcoming difficulties and preserving traditional values.

"In particular, I want to send my gratitude to Vu Minh Long," the principal said, his voice solemn, "who not only saved a club that was at risk of dissolution, but also inspired all students about the meaning of preserving national cultural heritage, even when facing the deepest personal losses."

Applause rang out throughout the schoolyard, many students turned to look at Minh Long with admiring eyes. He felt his cheeks burning with embarrassment, but at the same time filled with a silent pride, thinking of him, thinking of the long journey that had passed since the afternoon Diem My first appeared at his door.

After the official ceremony, the Water Puppet Club held a small performance right at the school yard lake, as a farewell gift for the 12th grade members about to leave school, especially Minh Long and Diem My, who have been most attached and devoted to the club during the past school year.

Thao, now one of the most veteran and confident members of the club, stood up to speak on behalf of the remaining members. "Mr. Long and Ms. My," she said, her voice trembling with emotion, "we don't know how to thank you two enough. Without you two, perhaps the club would no longer exist, and we would not have the opportunity to learn such a beautiful art like this."

She gave Minh Long a small, carefully wrapped gift — when he opened it, he saw that it was a painting drawn together by the club members, depicting the moment of the performance at the district festival, with the image of puppets sparkling on the water under the stage lights, and in the corner of the painting, a small line neatly written: "The legacy continues — Thank you, Mr. Long, for opening the door for us."

Minh Long held the picture, his emotions were so overwhelming that it took him a while to be able to speak. “Thank you,” he said, his voice choked up. "It is you who have given me a reason to return to what I love most. I promise, no matter where I go or what I do, I will always follow and support the club, and I am confident that, under your guidance, the club will develop even further."

Diem My, standing next to him, could not hide her tears of happiness as she looked at the younger members, whom she had worked hard to nurture for two years as club president, now mature, confident, and ready to shoulder the responsibility of continuing the club's tradition in the coming years.

The farewell performance took place in an atmosphere that was both joyful and nostalgic, with the participation of all members, including new faces joining after the district festival. Minh Long and Diem My participated in the final performance together, controlling a couple puppet, symbolizing love and attachment, amid warm applause and cheers from the remaining members.

After the show, when everyone gradually dispersed, Minh Long and Diem My stayed, sitting on the shore of the lake, where their journey began nearly a year ago. "Do you feel any regret?" Diem My asked, leaning her head on his shoulder.

"A little," Minh Long admitted, "but mostly grateful. I think, without this school year, without everything that happened — both pain and happiness — I would never have become the person I am now."

"Me too," Diem My said, smiling out at the calm lake surface reflecting the afternoon sunlight. "And I think, this is not the end, but just a new chapter about to open. We still have the club to return to visit, there is still a long future ahead to build together."

Minh Long nodded, held her hand tightly, they both sat quietly watching the sunset fall on the lake, the puppets were neatly arranged on the shore, waiting for new hands to continue writing their story, while the story of Minh Long and Diem My, although one chapter has closed, there are still many new pages waiting to be written in the upcoming college years.

Before leaving school that day, Minh Long stopped by the club room one last time, where he had spent countless afternoons practicing, chatting, and growing with new friends throughout the past school year. He looked around the small room, now decorated much more beautifully than the first day he entered, with a corner displaying documentary photos, newly won awards, and even a board listing the list of members over the years.

He took out the swallow puppet from his pocket that he completed a few days ago, the gift he promised to give back to the club. He placed it on the display shelf, right next to the other puppets his family had previously given him, a small but meaningful symbol of the continued continuation of the legacy his grandfather left behind.

Teacher Phuc, who happened to pass by, stopped and saw him standing quietly in the living room. "It's almost time to say goodbye," he said, his voice both happy and a little sad.

"Yes," Minh Long replied, turning to look at the teacher, "but I think, this is not a complete goodbye. I will still come back, every time I have the opportunity, to see how the club develops."

"I believe that," Mr. Phuc nodded, placing his hand on his former student's shoulder. "And I think your grandfather, if he could see all you've done this past school year, would be more proud of you than anything else in his life."

Hearing those words, Minh Long could not contain his emotions, his eyes were watery but the smile on his lips was still bright. He shook Mr. Phuc's hand, thanking him again for everything he had done for the club, for him, over the years, before leaving the living room, stepping out into the school yard where Diem My was waiting, the late afternoon sunlight dyed the whole space yellow, signaling that an important day was about to end, making way for a new, promising journey ahead.

On the way home, Minh Long and Diem My walked slowly through familiar streets, reviewing every memory they had spent together during the past school year - from the tense first meeting, to the training sessions that gradually healed both of their hearts, to even the storms they overcame together. "You know," Diem My said, holding his hand tighter, "when I first came to find you, I simply thought I was trying to save the club. I never imagined that journey would lead me to something much more meaningful — not just saving a club, but also accompanying you through a journey of growth, and finding the love of my life."

"Me too," Minh Long replied, squeezing her hand. "I think, sometimes the most important things in life come from the beginnings we never expected. Thank you, for not giving up, for patiently waiting for me to find myself again." They walked on in the warm sunset, filled with gratitude and hope for the new chapters that were about to open in both of their lives.
