Chapter 26
Chapter 26 — The City Behind the Mist
One month after that fateful meeting, the People's Committee of Van Son town organized a special ceremony, titled "Memorial and Vindication Ceremony", held right in the central square of the old town, which was once the focus of the disaster fifteen years ago, has now been firmly reinforced and is in the process of strong revival.
Hundreds of Van Son people, along with representatives of the provincial government and press agencies, were present to witness this historic moment. On the stands, a large stone stele was erected, engraved with the names of all seventeen victims who died in the disaster of the past, along with a solemn inscription recognizing the merits of architect Bach Vinh Son, who had been unjustly hidden for fifteen years.
"Today, we not only commemorate the deceased, but also officially restore the honor of a person who was slandered and turned away by an entire community, just because of the lies of a few individuals," Mr. Nguyen Trong Hai said in front of the entire ceremony, his solemn voice echoing throughout the square. "Architect Bach Vinh Son, who devoted his whole life to the safety of this land, deserves to be recognized as one of the people who contributed the most to protecting Van Son, even though he was no longer alive to witness this day."
Khanh Linh, standing on the stage next to her father's portrait, could not hide the tears rolling down her cheeks as she listened to each statement. Viet Hoang stood right next to her, his hand holding her hand tightly as a solid fulcrum in this emotional moment.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Khanh Linh said when it was her turn to speak, her voice trembling but full of determination. "Fifteen years ago, my father lost everything - his honor, his career, and the trust of the people he devotedly served. But he never gave up his belief in the truth, even though he had to live the last years of his life in humiliation. Today, I stand here, not only to say thank you to everyone who believed and accompanied me on this journey to find the truth, but also to promise my father, and all the people of Van Son, that I will continue on the path he started — building a safe, transparent Van Son worthy of the sacrifices of all the fallen."
Applause echoed throughout the square, mixed with the tears of many people who had blamed her family for many years, now expressing deep regret and gratitude. Ms. Ut Suong, standing nearby, could not hide her emotions, tightly holding the hand of Mr. Kieu Xuan Thinh who was standing next to her.
"Finally, justice has been served," Mr. Thinh whispered, his eyes directed towards the portrait of his deceased old friend. "Mr. Son, do you see, your daughter has done what this whole town owes you for the past fifteen years."
After the ceremony, Khanh Linh spent time talking to each victim's family present, listening to the stories and pain they have had to carry for the past fifteen years. Many families, upon learning about Ho Xuan Truong's proposal to return ill-gotten assets to establish a support fund, expressed their agreement, seeing it as a small part of justice being served, even though nothing could fully compensate for the losses they had suffered.
"We don't need money to ease the pain of losing loved ones," a middle-aged woman who lost her husband in the disaster last year shared with Khanh Linh, her voice still choked. "But we need to know that their sacrifice was not meaningless, that the lessons from that tragedy will help keep future generations safer. Seeing the new project being built with care and integrity like this, we feel somewhat comforted."
Construction work, after pausing during the days of storms and floods, resumed at an urgent pace but still fully guaranteed the strict safety standards that Khanh Linh had established. The entire design was adjusted and supplemented based on lessons learned from the recent storm, with the drainage and geological reinforcement system upgraded to a much higher safety standard than originally planned.
"We are building not just a renovated old town, but a symbol of recovery, of the ability of an entire community to overcome adversity," Viet Hoang shared in a progress report meeting with Mr. Bui Quoc Bao. "Every brick, every pillar erected here, carries a part of memory, a part of a lesson from a painful past."
That afternoon, a group of reporters from the central television station came to Khanh Linh and proposed to do a special report on the journey to exonerate her father, as well as the process of rebuilding the old town of Van Son. At first, she was somewhat hesitant about public attention, but after consideration, she realized this could be an opportunity to spread valuable lessons from her family's story to many other communities across the country.
"I hope that my father's story, and that of the entire Van Son town, can become a reminder for anyone who is responsible for construction safety and human life safety," she shared in front of the camera, her voice calm but full of weight. "Honesty, even at great cost, is always the only right path."
The report also dedicated a part to recognize the silent but no less important contribution of Viet Hoang, who stood side by side with Khanh Linh throughout the recent thorny journey. In front of the camera, he humbly refused to take all the credit for himself. "I only play a technical support role," he said. "The person who is truly courageous and resilient in pursuing the truth to the end is Khanh Linh. She deserves more recognition than anyone else."
After the recording session, the Provincial Department of Construction also officially sent a letter inviting Viet Hoang to take on the position of chief geological consultant for all future urban beautification projects of the province, recognizing his outstanding contributions in detecting and promptly preventing serious geological risks at Van Son. "This is a great honor," he told Khanh Linh when sharing the good news, "but I still want to continue accompanying you and fully complete this project before taking on any other new responsibilities."
"You deserve that position more than anyone," Khanh Linh replied, her eyes filled with pride for him. "And I believe, no matter what position you are in, you will always bring the best values to wherever you are."
That evening, after a long day full of emotions, Khanh Linh and Viet Hoang walked together through the old town that was gradually reviving under the warm yellow light. "I feel like a huge burden has finally been lifted from my shoulders," Khanh Linh said, her voice lighter than ever. "For the first time in many years, I feel like I can truly look to the future, instead of being haunted by the past."
Viet Hoang smiled slightly, holding her hand tighter. "And I hope I will be able to accompany you on your journey towards the future," he said, his eyes filled with deep sincerity under the sparkling old street lights.
They stopped in front of the central square, where the newly erected memorial stone stele still smelled of new stone, soft yellow light shining on each inscription engraved with the names of the victims. Khanh Linh gently placed her hand on the stone, feeling its coolness under her fingertips, like a silent promise that what happened here will never be forgotten, nor will it ever happen again.
"I think this will be the right place to hold the official inauguration of the entire project, when everything is complete," she said, her voice thoughtful, looking around the square space that is gradually being renovated with rows of newly planted trees and neatly arranged stone benches. "A place to both remember the past and welcome a new chapter for this whole town."
"I believe it will be a meaningful ceremony," Viet Hoang replied, wrapping his arms gently around her shoulders as they both stood silently looking at the shimmering lights reflecting on the water surface of the small fountain newly installed nearby. In the distance, gentle music emanated from a small cafe that had just reopened after the storm, blending with the bustling laughter of people gradually regaining their daily rhythm, creating a peaceful picture full of hope for the future of Van Son.
