Chapter 29
Chapter 29 — The City Behind the Mist
Three months after the surprising proposal in the inauguration square, the wedding of Khanh Linh and Viet Hoang was held on a clear early spring day, when Van Son was filled with peach blossoms and plum blossoms blooming on the hillsides, completely dispelling the cold of the past winter.
The chosen location was the central square of the old town, where the two had gone through many ups and downs together during their journey to find the truth. The decoration team has turned the space here into a beautiful romantic scene, with thousands of peach blossom petals scattered across the walkway, soft white silk strips flying in the spring breeze, blending with shimmering candles lit when night falls.
From early morning, Khanh Linh was present at Mrs. Ut Suong's small house, where she asked her and her mother to help prepare the wedding outfit. The traditional red wedding ao dai, meticulously hand-embroidered by local artisans of Van Son, dressed Khanh Linh in a beauty that was both traditional and gorgeous, making both Mrs. Ut Suong and Mrs. Diep teary-eyed when looking at the bride in the complete outfit.
"You're so beautiful, Khanh Linh," Mrs. Ut Suong said, her voice choked. "I believe, your father, even though he cannot be present today, is still watching and smiling happily when he sees his daughter finding a peaceful destination."
Mrs. Diep, adjusting each fold of her daughter's shirt, could not hide the tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks. “I wish your father could personally walk you down the aisle today,” she said, her voice shaking. "But I believe, he is always here, in your heart, in every step you have taken to get to where you are today."
The ceremony was held according to traditional rituals harmoniously combined with modern elements, with the witness of a large number of Van Son people, who have followed Khanh Linh's journey for more than a year as if witnessing their own child's story. Mr. Bui Quoc Bao, as a representative of the local government, was honored to be invited to speak and bless the couple.
"The love story of the two children, blossoming amid the harshest hardships and challenges, is the most beautiful testament to the power of honesty and steadfastness," he said, his voice filled with emotion to all the guests present. "Van Son is proud to witness, and be a small part of, this beautiful story."
When it came to the ring exchange ceremony, Viet Hoang looked deeply into Khanh Linh's eyes, his voice trembling with emotion as he recited the vows. "I promise to always be by your side, through all the ups and downs of life, just like what we've been through together," he said. "I promise to always be a solid fulcrum, so that you can confidently pursue the values you believe in, the same way you steadfastly pursued the truth for your father."
Khanh Linh, tears rolling down her cheeks but still smiling brightly, responded to his vow with all sincerity. "I promise to always trust and accompany you on every journey ahead," she said. "Just like you have always believed in me and accompanied me, even in the darkest moments of my life."
When the two shared their first kiss as husband and wife, applause and congratulations echoed throughout the square, blending with peach blossom petals fluttering in the gentle spring breeze. The sky of Van Son that day was incredibly blue, without a single cloud, as if nature itself was blessing the couple's happiness.
The wedding was held right at the square, with the participation of all the townspeople, the victims' families who had accompanied Khanh Linh on her journey to find justice, and friends and colleagues from everywhere who had followed her story all the time. The atmosphere is filled with joy, bustling laughter, mixed with traditional dances and folk songs of the highlands.
In the middle of the party, Khanh Linh took the time to go to each table and thank each guest for accompanying her throughout the arduous journey. When she came to the table of the victims' families, she couldn't help but be moved by the sincere blessings they gave her, even though they themselves had lost so much in the disaster of the past.
"Your happiness is also a great comfort to all of us," an elderly woman, the mother of one of the victims, told Khanh Linh, her voice filled with sincerity. "Seeing him find happiness, after everything his family has been through, makes us feel like somehow our losses were not completely meaningless."
Late at night, when the party gradually calmed down, Khanh Linh and Viet Hoang stood quietly together in a corner of the square, watching the spring moon shine down on the old town sleeping peacefully. "I can't believe it could end so beautifully," Khanh Linh whispered, leaning her head on her husband's shoulder.
"This is not the end," Viet Hoang replied, wrapping his arms around her tightly. "It's a new beginning, for both of us, and for all of Van Son."
A while ago, while the guests were still lingering to enjoy the elaborately prepared traditional dishes, Mr. Kieu Xuan Thinh stood up and asked for permission to say a few words as a representative of Mr. Bach Vinh Son's old friends. He brought with him a small, old wooden box that he had kept for many years.
"Before Mr. Son passed away, he entrusted me with this box, telling me that it would only be given to Khanh Linh on the day she was truly happy," he said, his voice trembling with emotion, handing the box to Khanh Linh in front of all the guests. "He said, I believe that day will definitely come, even though it may be very far away."
Khanh Linh opened the box with trembling hands. Inside was a letter that had yellowed over time and a silver hairpin, the jewelry her mother had worn on her own wedding day. The letter, in her father's familiar handwriting, read: "My dear daughter, if you are reading these lines, it means you have found true happiness in your life. I am sorry that I cannot be with you on this important day, but I always believe, you will find someone worthy of your love and trust, just like the way your mother once trusted me. Live happily, my daughter."
Khanh Linh's tears flowed uncontrollably. She hugged the letter tightly to her heart as if hugging her own father. Viet Hoang, standing next to her, gently supported her, so she could vent all her pent-up emotions in that sacred moment. All the guests present could not hide their emotions. Many people quietly wiped away their tears at the deep affection that a father had for his daughter, even though he had been gone for a long time.
"Dad already knew," Khanh Linh whispered, her hand caressing the silver brooch sparkling in the candlelight. "Dad believed in me, even when I didn't dare believe in myself."
After that emotional moment, the party continued in a warm, bustling atmosphere. Traditional dances of the highlands were performed by young girls in bright costumes in the middle of the square, attracting warm cheers from all guests. Khanh Linh, although still a little emotional, was also pulled into the middle of the spread circle, hand in hand with Viet Hoang, immersing herself in the bustling sounds of drums and gongs echoing throughout the space.
Near midnight, when most of the guests had gradually left, only the closest people remained, Khanh Linh and Viet Hoang sat down next to the reduced feast, enjoying the last rare peaceful moments of the big day. Mrs. Diep, sitting next to her daughter, held her hand tightly, her eyes filled with satisfaction. "Today, I am the happiest mother in the world," she said, her voice filled with emotion.
"I'm also the happiest girl in the world, mom," Khanh Linh replied, resting her head on her mother's shoulder for a moment, before turning to look at Viet Hoang with eyes full of love.
When the last candles on the square gradually burned out, leaving only silver moonlight illuminating the entire space, Khanh Linh gently stood up, pulled Viet Hoang's hand and walked to the memorial stone stele for the last time on that important night. She placed her hand on the cool stone, whispering a thank you to all those who had fallen, those whose sacrifices, although painful, had helped guide her to the happiness she had today.
"We will always remember you guys," she said, her voice as gentle as a prayer. "And we promise to always live worthy of the lessons that sacrifice left behind."
