Chapter 8
Chapter 8 — The French company paid me 2,000 yuan, the next day the entire chain was paralyzed
The control room erupted into cheers, and prolonged applause as if someone had just saved an entire city. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. But no one forgot — the only person who made it happen... was me. I didn't feel happy at all. Not a trace of joy, not a trace of complacency. I just quietly opened the completed report file, saved it, and then pressed send. Recipient: Personal mailbox of the group CEO.
“Comprehensive technical report on the production line paralysis incident at the French branch.”
The contents include: • Analysis of the root cause of the crisis: It was the incredibly stupid decisions of Pierre and the human resources department. • Comprehensive damage assessment table, both direct and indirect, arising from the technical team's erroneous actions during my absence. • And finally, a petition for specific responsibility, clearly stating the individuals and departments involved, along with the level of impact and recommendations for handling. Every word, every line of data in the report... Like sharp nails - Pinning Pierre and the management team tightly into a column of shame, so that no one can cover up, brush off their hands, or push the blame onto others anymore. I closed my laptop and stood up. Looking at the CEO's assistant - the person who had followed me closely since returning to Paris, I said:
“I completed my mission.”
"Send word to your CEO: money given, job done. I'm leaving."
I don't intend to stay another second. No need for a celebration party. No thanks needed. No need for applause. Get money. Leave. This trip to Paris — started with contempt, ended with a judgment. And now, I close it. Just as I was about to leave the company, going directly to the airport, the CEO's assistant stopped me.
“Miss Lam, our CEO hopes to meet you once before you leave.”
“He's flying from Geneva, he'll be there within the hour.”
I frowned slightly. To be honest, I have no interest in these types of high-level meetings. But the assistant's eyes were extremely sincere, even carrying something like... pleading. I thought for a moment. Finally nodded. An hour later, I was invited to the reception room on the top floor of the company. And there, I met the man who was running a huge commercial empire. He looked a little older than the image in the video call, but his eyes were still sharp, like cold blades — the eyes of someone who had made countless life-or-death decisions. The first thing he did — was right in front of me, sign a document.
“From this point on,
Pierre and Mary – are officially no longer employees of the corporation.” His voice was calm, but decisive like the sound of a hammer hitting a table. Leave no chance to anyone. After that, he signaled his assistant to leave, then poured me a glass of water himself. Unlike Pierre, who opened his mouth about power and money, he did not talk about benefits, did not solicit. Instead — he talked about technique. From the system I built, to the potential of artificial intelligence in the future manufacturing industry. He is not a very technical person, but every question is to the point, not superficial, and does not show off fake knowledge. Most importantly — he didn't see me as a tool for hire, but as an expert, capable of peer-to-peer dialogue. After a while of deep conversation, he returned to the main issue.
“Miss Lam, on behalf of the company,
I would like to sincerely apologize for the short-sightedness, arrogance and stupidity we have shown before.” He stood up and bowed slightly towards me. I didn't expect that a person in the highest position of this corporation would be so humble.
“Talent is the most valuable asset of a business.
Yet we… chose the stupidest way to hurt the person we needed the most.” He sat back, his eyes never leaving me — a serious, passionate look, without any scent of transaction.
“So today, I came here, not to give orders.
But to make a request — and hope you will really give it serious thought.”
“We would like to invite you to stay.”
Not an invitation from a company. It's the respect that comes from a leader who understands human values. And that, for the first time since this story began, made me a little shaken.
“I will send you a completely new contract.”
“Salary of 5 million euros per year — remains the same.”
“In addition, you will receive 5% of the net profits from all engineering projects you lead in the future.”
“She will take on the position of Technical Director not only of the French branch, but of the entire European region, with full decision-making authority over personnel, finances and R&D direction.”
“In addition, the corporation will give her 100,000 shares of stock options, divided over a 5-year period.”
Each condition he proposed was enough to make anyone in the professional world stunned. Not just huge numbers — but real power. He paused for a moment, his voice low — so sincere that it was impossible not to be moved:
“Miss Lam, what we need from you…
not just techniques for fighting fires.”
“We need people like you, to change a system that is old and stagnant.”
"We need your vision. We need your strategic depth. We need your ability to lead."
For the first time, I looked at these Western faces… and saw something I had not felt for a long time — true respect. Not because of how much money I can help them make, but because they recognize me for who I am — my talents, qualities, and values.
