Chapter 6
Chapter 6 — The Night Before My Wedding, I Disappeared
Fourteen hours left... It's time for my flight to Milan. Tong Ky Uyen sent me an address via WeChat.
"It's seven o'clock in the evening. I booked a table at Thap Quang. We haven't had a meal together in a long time."
Thap Quang is an old French restaurant... Where he used his first bonus to take me to eat when he first fell in love. I stuffed the last few clothes into the suitcase and zipped it up. Then answer in one word: At seven o'clock in the evening, I arrived at the restaurant on time. Tong Ky Uyen was already sitting at the window waiting for me. Today he specially changed into the dark blue shirt that I had previously complimented him on, and his hair was also extremely neatly combed. Seeing me sitting down, he pushed the menu in front of me.
"Let's see what you want to eat? I remember you like Beef Wellington here the most."
His voice was gentle, his eyes carried a hint of ingratiation.
“No need, just call it what you want.”
I didn't open the menu, just held the glass of lemonade in front of me and took a sip. Tong Ky Uyen called the waiter over and ordered a few familiar dishes. While waiting for the food to arrive, he took out a delicate velvet box from his pocket and pushed it towards me.
“Van Thanh, open it and take a look.”
I don't touch it. He opened the box himself. Inside is a Bulgari diamond necklace, sparkling with luxury under the restaurant's dim lights.
“Actually, last week was your birthday, but I was busy with a project so I forgot.”
He looked at me, his eyes full of affection.
“I asked someone to bring this necklace from abroad.”
“Consider it a birthday gift to make up for it.”
“You definitely look beautiful when you wear it.”
I looked at that necklace and said nothing. My birthday is next month. The person who celebrated last week's birthday... Was Miao Xiaoxiao. I looked at him and suddenly felt a little funny. Even lying... He no longer bothered to prepare properly. I'm not exposing it. Just calmly close the box and push it aside. It seemed that Tong Ky Uyen was a bit disappointed with my reaction, but quickly adjusted her emotions.
“Van Thanh, I know you've been frustrated these past few days.”
He reached out to hold my hand on the table. I withdrew my hand and placed it on my knee. His hand shot into space, awkwardly stopping in mid-air.
"Tieu Xao's story is because you didn't think carefully."
“Tomorrow after we register our marriage, I will let her move out and rent a house.”
"I also told the lawyer to cancel the transfer procedure for the other apartment."
He looked at me, his voice sincere as if he was making a promise.
“Let's live a good life together in the future, okay?”
At that moment, the phone on his desk rang. On the screen appeared the name Miao Xiaoxiao. Tong Ky Uyen looked at the screen, then looked at me, seemingly hesitating whether to listen or not. The phone bell kept ringing. I picked up the wine glass and gently shook the red liquid inside.
“Who knows, maybe it's urgent.”
Tong Ky Uyen felt liberated and immediately accepted the call.
“What's wrong, Tieu Xao?”
On the other end of the line came Mieu Hieu Xao's voice, carrying the sound of crying.
"Mr. Ky Uyen... my stomach hurts so much..."
“The power suddenly went out in the house, I'm scared of the dark…”
Tong Ky Uyen's face immediately changed.
"Don't cry anymore, have you taken your medicine yet? I'll be home right away!"
He suddenly stood up and grabbed his coat from behind him.
“Van Thanh, I'm sorry, Tieu Xao She's sick, the power is out in the house, she's alone so she's scared."
He put on his shirt and looked at me apologetically.
“Let's eat this meal next time.”
“After you eat, go home early.”
He pulled out a card from his wallet and placed it on the table.
“The password is my birthday.”
Having finished speaking, he turned around and prepared to leave. After two steps, he stopped and turned to look at me. His eyes carried a bit of guilt and fake affection.
"Wait until I get home. Tomorrow we will register our marriage."
I watched his back quickly leave... Disappearing behind the revolving door of the restaurant. I picked up my knife and fork, cut a small piece of beef and put it in my mouth. The meat is too tough. Can't chew forever. I spit that piece of beef into a tissue. Then take off the engagement ring on your right ring finger. The ring that he once knelt on one knee with red eyes put on my finger that year. I put it under the other bank card. Then stood up and walked out of the restaurant. The wind outside is a bit cold. I tightened my windbreaker and raised my hand to stop a taxi going to the airport.
