Chapter 30 — Unprocessed Photos

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

One year after graduation, Bao Nghi stood in front of the gate of Tran Phu school on a weekend afternoon, feeling both familiar and strange when looking back at the school that had witnessed the biggest turning point in her life. She visited the school at the invitation of Mr. Toan, who kept in touch with her throughout her first year of college, to attend the Photography Club's second annual exhibition - an event that has become a new school tradition since last year's resounding success.

Minh Khang was waiting for her at the gate, holding two glasses of milk tea bought from a familiar shop near the university where they were both studying - as planned, they chose schools close to each other in the same city, close enough to maintain their relationship without having to face the heartbreaking separation that many other student couples have to go through after graduation.

"Are you ready?" Minh Khang asked, giving her a glass of milk tea, his familiar smile still as warm as ever.

"Ready," Bao Nghi replied, holding his hand as they walked into the schoolyard, where memories of a tumultuous school year were still imprinted in every small corner.

The photo darkroom, now upgraded with some new equipment but still maintaining the familiar cozy space, was filled with students preparing for tonight's exhibition. Vy, now the club's president, is busy directing new members, with a more confident and mature demeanor than last year. When she saw Bao Nghi and Minh Khang entering, she immediately ran to hug them both.

"You two are here!" Vy shouted, her voice full of excitement. "I have to show you this year's results. We worked so hard."

Linh, a tenth grade student last year who timidly asked Bao Nghi for advice, is now an active member of the club, confidently taking Bao Nghi to see her works selected for display - a collection of photos of the silent moments of the school's janitors, directly inspired by the first photo Bao Nghi took nearly two years ago.

"I still remember what you said," Linh said, her voice full of pride. "About not having to be completely scared to try. I'm still a little scared, but I tried, and look, now my photo is on display."

Bao Nghi smiled, feeling a deep happiness when seeing the seed he once sowed had sprouted and developed in such a beautiful way in another young soul.

Dinh Phong, now a first-year student studying Cinema Engineering but still takes the opportunity to visit his old school whenever he has the chance, appeared with a large box of cakes, declaring it a "gift to celebrate the second-year exhibition" even though no one asked him to bring anything.

"You still haven't changed at all," Bao Nghi smiled, hugging the friend who had become an indispensable part of her most beautiful memories.

"Why change when everything is perfect like this?" Phong replied, winking mischievously, making the whole group laugh.

The exhibition that evening went smoothly, attracting a large number of students, parents, and even a few familiar faces from the local press who continued to pay attention to the club's success story. Bao Nghi stood quietly in a corner, watching the new generation of students confidently introduce their works to the crowd, feeling a beautiful cycle of growth and passing on trust.

After the exhibition, when most of the guests had left, Bao Nghi and Minh Khang lingered in the dark room alone, as had become their habit every time they returned to visit their old school. The familiar red light still radiated the same warm color as ever, and Minh Khang, with a meaningful smile, took out an old film roll from his coat pocket.

"Do you remember the last roll of film we developed last year?" he asked. "I found another roll, taken at the same time but I forgot to develop it. I thought, today is the right opportunity to complete it."

Bao Nghi smiled, feeling an emotion rising in his heart at that meaningful gesture. Together they performed the familiar process — threading the film, mixing the chemicals, keeping the timing precise — with a rhythm that had been honed countless times together before, as if their hands had instinctively memorized each step.

When the strip of film was hung on the clothesline to dry, the two stood silently watching the tiny frames gradually appear in the red light - moments from a year ago: Dinh Phong was grinning next to a chemical tank, Vy focused on arranging the exhibition layout, Mr. Toan stood thoughtfully looking at a photo, and in the middle of the strip of film, a frame made them both stop longer - Bao Nghi and Minh Khang stood side by side on the lakeside under the moonlight, hand in hand, both of their faces radiant. beaming a genuine smile, not staged at all.

"This must be when Phong secretly took pictures of us," Minh Khang said, laughing softly. "He never confessed, but I guess it was him."

Bao Nghi looked at that frame for a long time, feeling the entire journey they had gone through to get to this moment — from initial fear, through hurt and healing, to the solid trust they are building together today. "I want to print this," she said quietly. "For both of us."

"I think so too," Minh Khang replied, gently squeezing her hand.

They stood there, in the middle of the small room that had witnessed their entire story, under the familiar warm red light, watching the strip of film from the past slowly unfold before their eyes, and thinking about all the still undeveloped photos ahead — moments yet to come, chapters yet to be written, but now, they both knew, whatever the future brought, they would face it together, with honesty, respect, and a love that had been tested, ready to so that every moment, whether beautiful or difficult, can be seen fully in its true light, with no fear to stop it.

"You know," Bao Nghi said, resting his head on Minh Khang's shoulder as they both sat down on the familiar stool, waiting for the film strip to dry completely, "when I first joined the club, I thought I would never let anyone see the real me. I thought the camera lens would forever be the only place I felt safe."

"What now?" Minh Khang asked, his voice gentle, genuinely curious, not to lead her to any specific answer.

"Now I think," Bao Nghi said, slowly choosing each word, "the lens is not a place to hide anymore. It is a way for me to tell stories, for me to connect, for me to choose to share what I want to share, with people I trust. The safety I once sought behind it, I now find in the people around me — you, Thanh Truc, Phong, Vy, teacher Toan. The camera is just a tool for me to express that, no longer a shield to I'll run away again."

Minh Khang gently squeezed her hand, didn't say anything more, just let the warm silence between them speak for everything they both felt but didn't need to express it in words.

When the film strip was completely dry, they carefully cut out small pieces, chose the frame on the lakeside to enlarge, and printed two copies - one for Bao Nghi, one for Minh Khang, as a silent promise that, no matter how busy and how many new challenges university life brings, they will always keep a part of this story with them.

Before leaving the dark room, Bao Nghi stood for a moment, looking around the small room one last time that evening - the photo drying lines, chemical tanks, and dim red lights had become an inseparable part of her growing up story. She thought about the shy girl who had stood behind the pillar, fearfully looking through the crack in the door into this very room nearly two years ago, and felt a deep gratitude for the journey that had brought her here.

"Ready to go home?" Minh Khang asked, waiting for her at the door, holding two photo prints that still smelled of new paper.

"Ready," Bao Nghi replied, smiling, holding his hand.

They walked out of the dark room, closed the black painted wooden door behind them, and stepped into the cool night outside, where the stars sparkled in the sky like thousands of small frames waiting to be seen, to be treasured, to be washed out in the true light - no longer unwashed photos forever hidden in the dark, but stories ready to be told, to be shared, to be fully lived in the light of a sincere love and a strong friendship, which would continue to write many chapters. new, brighter, ahead.
