Chapter 24
Chapter 24 — Wind and Snow Falling, Ancient People Return
Morning Dew New Day
One year after the Xuan Huong Old Quarter Renovation project was officially completed, one morning in early winter, the dew in Hem Suong was as thick as usual, weaving between two rows of mossy tiled roofs, flowing slowly through each familiar street corner. But this morning, there was something different in the air, a quiet excitement creeping throughout the small alley, when everyone around here knew that today was a special day for Diep Suong flower shop.
Diep Khanh stood in front of the mirror in the small room above the shop, which used to be her mother's private room. She put on a simple but elegant wedding dress, designed by herself with the flower decoration in her hair with pure white gladiolus flowers, the flower associated with so many memories between her and Bach Du over the years.
"Daughter, you look very beautiful." Ms. Tam Nghien stood next to her, her trembling hand adjusting a strand of Diep Khanh's hair. Her eyes were filled with tears of emotion, her voice choked up, unable to hide the pride of someone who had followed her since her childhood days. "If Aunt Yen were still alive, she would definitely be very proud of you."
Diep Khanh smiled, reaching out to gently touch the old flower recipe book placed on the dressing table, a souvenir she always kept with her like a connection to her mother. "I think so too, grandma. I hope you're watching me from somewhere, and you'll be satisfied with what I've done."
She opened the notebook to the last page, where her mother had left an unfinished space, as if she had intended to save it to write something more but hadn't finished it yet. Diep Khanh took a pen and carefully wrote a few short lines, recording the recipe for the wedding bouquet she had personally designed for today, as a way to continue the mother-daughter story between two generations, so that the notebook would not only be a memory of the past, but also continue to accompany her in the new chapters of her life.
Lam Tuyen walked into the room, carrying a small basket of flowers, her voice filled with happiness. "It's all done, everyone is waiting for you out there, it's time." She looked at her friend from head to toe, her eyes filled with tears of emotion. "You are so beautiful, Diep Khanh. This is truly the moment you deserve after everything you've been through."
Diep Khanh took a deep breath, her heart pounding with every beat, excitement mixed with happiness filling her chest. She walked down the old wooden stairs, each step made a familiar creak as if humming a welcome song for this important day.
Outside the flower shop, the space is lavishly decorated but still retains Diep Suong's characteristic rustic and cozy look. The flower trellis on the winding iron frame, the result of the joint design of the two of them last year, is now blooming with pink and white climbing roses, creating a beautiful natural dome right in front of the shop, where a small cozy ceremony will be held, with only the attendance of family and closest friends.
Bach Du stood waiting under the flower dome, in a light gray suit, his face shining with unconcealed happiness when he saw Diep Khanh step out from the flower shop, amidst the morning mist that still lingered throughout the small alley. That moment, for both of them, was exactly like the first time they met in the university lecture hall, when their eyes met in a space filled with the scent of flowers, except now, there was no longer any hesitation or misunderstanding between them.
Ngo Thuc Van stood next to her son, her eyes filled with pride and happiness, without any trace of the strictness and aloofness of the past. She has become one of the most enthusiastic supporters of this relationship, often stopping by the flower shop to help Diep Khanh when needed, building a warm mother-daughter relationship that both cherish.
Duong Viet Bang and Chu Minh Lam were also present, standing with other guests under the flower dome, smiling and witnessing the happy moment of the two friends they had accompanied throughout the recent turbulent journey. Ve Thi Doan, a close friend of Ngo Thuc Van, also attended, bringing a bouquet of fragrant tea as a gift according to traditional customs.
"Diep Khanh, are you ready for a new journey?" Bach Du asked when she came to stand in front of him, his voice was gentle but contained so much love that had been cultivated through each day.
"I've been ready for a long time." Diep Khanh replied, a bright smile on her face, her eyes shining with sincere happiness. "From the day you reappeared on this street, amidst the thick fog, I knew we would find a way back to each other, no matter how many difficulties and challenges we had to go through."
The host of the ceremony, an elderly family friend invited by both sides, read simple but sincere blessings, recalling the long journey that the two had gone through together, from the pure student days, through five years of separation filled with misunderstandings, to today's moment of reunion filled with tears and smiles. The small ceremony was cozy, simple but full of love, exactly like the spirit that both Diep Khanh and Bach Du always aim for in their lives. There was no lavish ostentation, only the closest loved ones gathered together, witnessing the moment two hearts that had been lost for five long years finally found their way back to each other completely.
After the ceremony, when the morning sunlight began to penetrate the gradually fading fog, Diep Khanh and Bach Du stood together in front of the flower shop, hand in hand, looking out at Xuan Huong street that was gradually awakening to a new day. The beautifully restored ancient roofs and colorful climbing trellises all blend together to create a picture that is both old and new, just like their love story, carrying both ancient memories and a completely new beginning.
"Do you remember, when you told me in the past, no matter where you go, you can't leave this street?" Diep Khanh asked, leaning her head on his shoulder, enjoying the warmth amid the coldness of the Da Lat morning. The dew still lingered on the flower petals in front of the shop, sparkling slightly under the first rays of sunlight penetrating through, like thousands of small crystal beads adorning the already beautiful scene even more splendidly.
"You remember." Bach Du smiled and squeezed her hand tighter. "And I also remember, I said, no matter where I go, I want you there. Now, maybe we have found a way to make both of those wishes come true, right on this very street."
The morning wind gently blew through, bringing with it the typical cold air of Da Lat, sweeping away the thin mist that still lingered on the flower branches in front of the shop. But this time, that cold wind no longer brought with it the loneliness or hurt of the past years, but only a feeling of peace and warmth remained, like a gentle welcome to a new chapter in both of their lives, written by love, by understanding, and by trust that has been rebuilt from the brokenness of the past.
In the small crowd witnessing the ceremony, Cung Vinh Vuong also sent a congratulatory flower basket with a brief handwritten card, a gesture that Diep Khanh accepted with tolerance, seeing it as a complete end to the resentments of the past. A little further away, somewhere in the city, Ta Bao Tram's life is also turning a different page, full of difficulties and expensive lessons that she must face on her own, an inevitable consequence of the wrong choices accumulated over many years.
Diep Khanh no longer spends much thought on things from that sad past. She turned to look at Bach Du, his eyes were watching her with deep affection, then they both looked towards the brilliant flower dome in front of the shop, where the closest customers were raising a glass to celebrate a new beginning. The morning wind continued to blow gently, carrying the faint scent of gladiolus flowers, mixed with warm laughter echoing throughout the small alley.
Diep Suong flower shop, amidst the morning mist of Alley of Mists, continues to open its doors to welcome a new day, as it has done for more than twenty years, carrying the legacy of a deceased mother, and now, the complete love story of the daughter she always loved, finally finding her own true happiness, right on the same old street that witnessed both the pain and the sweetness of a long but worthy journey.
Diep Khanh bent down, plucked a dew-still white gladiolus from the wedding flower basket in her hand, and pinned it neatly in her hair. She suddenly remembered the words her mother wrote in the recipe book last year: "Flowers don't need to be the most beautiful, they just need to be at the right time." For many years, she still thought that sentence was only meant to talk about flower arranging. Now standing here, in the morning mist, hand in hand with the man who had come a long way to return right when she needed him the most, she understood that her mother had talked about more than just flowers.
