Chapter 8
Chapter 8 — You demand justice, I'll show you what justice is
“So what are you going to do?”
I closed the book and looked straight at him.
“Lam Vy, what did you say?”
"Divorce. Splitting it in half helped us figure things out clearly. If 'fairness' is the most important thing, then breaking up must also be fair."
He jumped up.
“I can't divorce because of this—”
"What's the matter? You criticized me for earning too little and asked to split it in half. You brought the whole family into my house and forced me to serve you. From beginning to end, you never respected me. Tell me, what is not enough for a divorce?"
“I know it's wrong—”
"You don't know it's wrong. You just know I have money."
That statement was like pouring a bucket of cold water. He stood dumbfounded.
"If I really only made 20,000 yuan, would you say today 'you knew it was wrong'? Would you still stand here and say no divorce?"
His lips trembled.
"I can't answer. Because the answer... we both know."
I took a file from the nightstand.
"This is the divorce agreement I asked my lawyer to prepare last week. The house is mine, no division. You buy the car, you keep it. Whoever keeps the money. Three years of marriage, no shared debt, no property disputes. Sign it, go to the agency on Monday to complete the procedures."
He took it, his hands shaking slightly.
“I prepared early.”
“The same night you proposed to split it in half.”
He turned the pages. Stop when you reach the last page.
"Here it says... I give up my right to request Han Vu to compensate for breach of contract."
"Yes. The termination of cooperation is my personal decision. The contract with your company is still valid. According to the contract, you must compensate me 1,200,000 yuan. But I let it go. This is the last time... because you are still my husband legally. Once signed, it's no more."
He closed the file.
“I didn't sign.”
"You can not sign. But I will file a divorce lawsuit. The court will investigate the assets. At that time, all of your expenses during the marriage, your family's misappropriation of assets, debts in your name... all will be revealed. Are you sure you want to go to that step?"
He sat still, unable to say a word. Outside the door, Vuong Que Chi's voice rang out.
"Tran Hao? What are you two talking about?"
I opened the door.
"Auntie, Tran Hao and I will divorce. Give you three days to move out of my house."
Her expression turned from bewilderment to horror in just a second.
"Are you crazy? How dare you leave my son?"
"It was my son who left this marriage first. Right from the moment he opened his mouth and said 'divide in half'."
Three days later, the Tran family staged a play of all levels. Vuong Que Chi cried three times. The first time was that night. She sat on the living room floor, beat her thighs and cried, saying her son had been tricked by the fox spirit. I was in my bedroom, ordering a box of earplugs. The second time was the next morning. She blocked the door to prevent me from leaving, insisting that I explain clearly.
"Every month you earn 20,000 yuan, where do you get the confidence to ask for a divorce? After getting divorced, are you going to eat the Northwest wind?"
“Auntie, the person you said earned 20,000 yuan… this morning his assets just exceeded eight figures.”
“It's a number that I probably can't even count.”
She was stunned. I slipped past and went straight to the door. The third time was noon on Tuesday. She called her father-in-law over. Mr. Tran Duc Minh is not a person who likes to cause trouble. Because of his wife's pressure, he forced himself to "advise".
"Vy, husband and wife don't have conflicts, Tran Hao just doesn't speak well..."
“Uncle, no he is not clever. It's his heart that's gone wrong. Think about it, three years of marriage, what can he do? He proposed to divide it in half, he brought the person back, I did the housework, and I endured the resentment. From beginning to end, he only thought about himself.”
He silently sighed.
“So you really want a divorce?”
“I'm sure.”
He pondered for a moment.
“When it comes to the children, I can't stop it. But you and your wife... shouldn't come and bother you. Sorry."
Having finished speaking, he stood up, returned to his room and started packing his luggage. Vuong Que Chi followed behind and shouted:
“Are you crazy! He chased you and you left too? Don't you need face anymore?"
“Face?” He turned his head to look at her. “Didn't you ask to come? Didn't you say you would stay for a few days and then return? Stayed three weeks! Do you know how much resentment she endured?"
It was the longest speech he had spoken in three years. Vuong Que Chi choked. Tran Lam led Lac Lac out of the room.
“Are you really going?”
"Go." he said.
“But I haven't found a job yet—”
“Go back and find it!”
