Chapter 2
Chapter 2 — After I Left the ICU, the Whole Emergency System Went Downhill
“Director On… no, Ms. On, Director Giang wants to ask how the monitoring period of bed number 6 was previously set?”
Tan Tranh immediately turned cold.
"Pay attention to how you address yourself. Currently, On Tung is no longer in charge of the ICU."
I nodded.
"That's right."
"Now I no longer have the authority to be the homeroom teacher, and I will not overstep my authority."
“However, you can convey the message for me.”
"Patient in bed number 6 this morning was close to the danger zone. The machines cannot be applied according to any fixed pattern."
Doctor Trieu froze and quickly turned back inside. Immediately afterwards, Giang Nhiem's tense voice rang out inside.
"Follow the septic shock protocol. Transfuse fluid first, then reevaluate."
Head nurse Manh Tri Vi's expression immediately changed.
“Director Giang, this patient cannot receive fluids that way.”
Giang Nhiem clenched the medical records in her hand.
“In such a writing process.”
Tan Tranh stood next to him and interrupted:
“Chief nurse, immediately carry out medical orders.”
I turned around and returned to the office. If I stood there another second, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to hold back and rush in. In the office, there was only a thermos left, a notebook with frayed edges from being flipped through too many times, and a few thank you cards from the patient's family. The one on top is of a little girl. The handwriting is crooked and scribbled:
“Doctor Wen, thank you for returning my father to me.”
I quietly placed the card in the cardboard box. Chu Du Bach stood leaning at the door.
“Do I have to do it to this extent?”
I raised my head to look at him.
“What did I do?”
"Principal Tan only removed me from my position as dean, not fired me. Now I'm throwing my hands up and leaving, what should the faculty do?"
I looked straight into his eyes.
“Chu Du Bach, didn't you just say that?”
“Without me, the whole team would have to learn how to operate on their own.”
He frowned slightly.
“I mean don't push yourself too hard all the time.”
I laughed.
“Take away my rights.”
“Taking my achievements on someone else's name.”
“When there was a problem in the ICU, they turned around and asked me what to do.”
“You think I'm stupid after all…”
“Or do you think I love you to the point of no end?”
In the hallway, soft sounds of conversation echoed.
“Director On is also really heartless, the patient is still in emergency.”
“Normally, doesn't she always say that patients come first?”
Chu Du Bach heard clearly. But he never opened his mouth to say a single word for me. Suddenly, I no longer felt pain. Some things die not in an instant. But little by little, little by little it cools down. I held the cardboard box and walked out. Chu Du Bach raised his hand to block it.
“At least you have to help everyone get through this hurdle and then go.”
I looked up at him.
“By what identity?”
“The person who was suspended from work?”
“Or a backup tool under Director Giang?”
His voice became lower.
“On Tung, don't force people too much.”
I spoke softly:
“Before, I was always harsh because I wanted to save people.”
“For now, it's so that you don't continue to trample on me.”
Before the elevator door closed, Manh Tri Vi hurriedly followed.
“Director Wen, the oxygen saturation of bed number 6 is dropping!”
I Tighten the edge of the carton. Finally, just leave one sentence:
“Tell Principal Qin to sign the emergency authorization.”
“Without authorization, I will not interfere with the medical order.”
The elevator door slowly closed. The moment the door closed, I took out my phone and sent the Medical Department a text message. 【The condition of patient in bed number 6 is quite special, it is recommended to immediately activate the second-level consultation, avoiding treatment according to a single protocol.】 After sending, I turned off the screen. I have done everything I can do. The day I left the hospital, the sky was so gloomy that it made people feel stuffy. In the hospital's general chat group, Tan Tranh posted an official announcement. 【From today, comrade On Tung no longer holds the position of Head of the Department of Intensive Care. Comrade Giang Nhiem will be in full charge of ICU management.】 A series of responses quickly appeared below. 【Supporting the hospital's decision, the ICU should have changed the atmosphere long ago.】 【Director Giang is young and enthusiastic, looking forward to the new look of the department.】 【No one can deny Director Wen's ability, but she is truly too strong.】 I looked at the screen for a few seconds and then directly exited the group. Among those who just spoke up, there was someone who called me in the middle of the night to beg me to arrange more hospital beds. Some people push critical cases that no one wants to admit into the ICU. Some people, when a patient's relatives cause trouble, hide behind me, leaving me alone to explain. Now, they say I'm too strong. When I got home, I put the box down in the office. Pulling out the drawer, my fingertips touched the old USB. In the hospital system, there are still public procedures submitted by me. But what really helps an emergency system run smoothly is never just a few sets of forms. Which patient cannot wait? In what cases is it required to report beyond the level? Which expert will answer the phone the fastest in the middle of the night? The department said "come right away", but in reality it took more than twenty minutes. Those things are not secrets. It's just that up until now, no one has ever really asked seriously. Nine o'clock in the evening. Chu Du Bach returned home. He pushed open the office door. Saw me packing my luggage.
“Where are you going?”
“Go now?”
He tried to suppress his rising anger.
“This afternoon, patient number 6 almost couldn't be saved, do you know?”
“What happened after that?”
“It was saved.”
“That's good.”
Chu Du Bach took two steps forward.
"You know that Giang Nhiem just took over the job and is not yet familiar with the process. Can't you help a little?"
The movement in my hand stopped.
