Chapter 8
Chapter 8 — After My Mother-in-law Bought Me a 3 Million Yuan Death Insurance Package
“The morning after tomorrow, I will send someone to your house to pick you up.”
“Pay attention to safety.”
“Have the house locks been changed yet?”
“Changed.”
"Very good. See you the day after tomorrow."
I hung up. When my finger turned off the phone screen, I realized my hand was no longer shaking. Luu Tieu Yen stood next to me, looking at me with a puzzled face.
“Tu Lan, that phone call just now… what are you doing?”
I looked at her. It's been ten days. For the past ten days, I have shouldered everything alone. Can't say. Cannot be revealed. But the day after tomorrow... it will be the end.
“Tieu Yen, come with me the day after tomorrow.”
“Go to her party.”
Liu Tieu Yen's eyes widened.
"Are you crazy? She didn't invite you! Wouldn't you humiliate yourself by going there?"
“You just need to come with me.”
I walked into the kitchen, built a fire to cook rice. All debts... will be counted one day the day after tomorrow. Early in the morning of the third day, it wasn't quite dawn yet, I woke up. Change into clean clothes. It's not anything luxurious, just the dark blue fabric shirt I wear when I shop every day, washed very cleanly, without a single oil stain. I pulled out the iron box from under the bed. Inside are all the notes from the past half month. Screenshot of insurance confirmation call. Time and content Vuong Thuy Hoa came to investigate. Record Dr. Chu's arrival at the house. Photo of the pork bag in front of the gate. The time Tran Nhi Ho appeared in the middle of the night. I don't bring those things with me. Trieu Loi's side already has a full chain of evidence. I only brought one thing. It's the file that Trieu Loi's people brought two days ago. Brown paper envelope. Above are two red seals of Vinh An insurance company and district police.
“Notice of establishing a joint fraud investigation.”
The writing inside is very clear. Vuong Thuy Hoa. Tran Dai Quan. Tran Nhi Ho. Chu Kien Quoc. Crime: insurance fraud. Amount involved: 3,000,000 yuan. I put the envelope in the cloth bag I carried with me. At half past seven, Liu Tieu Yen's electric car stopped in front of the yard gate. She was wearing a red coat, her expression both tense and agitated, as if she was about to go to the battlefield.
“Tu Lan, do you really want to go?”
On the way across the village, from afar I saw the Tran family's old house with a large theater set up. Red banners hung between two rows of poplar trees, on which was written:
“Happy Housewarming.”
Several large round tables filled the yard. Someone is arranging bowls and chopsticks. In the distance, I could see villagers coming in and out to help, and the sound of chickens and fish slaughtering was extremely bustling. Liu Tieu Yen leaned close to my ear.
"The whole village has arrived. I heard that people from the neighboring village also came over."
I didn't speak up. Trieu Loi has already said it. It's okay to arrive before nine o'clock. His men will be in position around eight-fifty. I looked at the phone. Fifteen past eight.
"Tieu Yen, don't go in front. Take me around the back alley and enter through the side door."
The electric car turned into a small alley. Eight forty. Tieu Yen and I quietly entered the Tran family's backyard from the side door. The kitchen helper was busy in the kitchen, no one paid attention to us. More than half of the tables were filled in the yard. I opened the curtains to the backyard and looked outside. Vuong Thuy Hoa sat in the middle of the host table. She was wearing a brand new red shirt, her hair had just been curled in town, and her face was rosy and exposed. Next to him is Tran Dai Quan wearing a vest and leather shoes. Different from the usual appearance of wearing shorts and playing cards. Village chief Mr. Chu sat next to him yes, smiling happily and clinking glasses with Tran Dai Quan. Aunt Truong brought the food out of the kitchen, with a flattering face she approached Vuong Thuy Hoa. The whole village is congratulating her. 3,000,000 yuan in release money. In this poor village, that is a sky-high number. Vuong Thuy Hoa spoke very loudly, her voice was so clear that even from afar I could still hear it clearly.
"Everyone, don't be polite! Eat well and drink happily! From now on, my family will have money, so anyone in the village who is in trouble can open their mouths!"
Cheers and applause echoed throughout the field. Tran Dai Quan stood up to invite him to drink. After returning to his seat, he leaned closer to say something to his mother. I saw Vuong Thuy Hoa smile and gently pat the back of his hand. That action is like saying:
“Don't worry, it's all over.”
Eight fifty-five. My phone vibrated. Message from Trieu Loi. Just one word: I took a deep breath.
“Tieu Yen.”
“Come with me.”
I pushed open the backyard curtain and walked step by step into the middle of the yard. The first person to see me was Aunt Truong, who was carrying food. The plate in her hand shook and almost fell to the ground.
