Chapter 15
Chapter 15 — Bridge Yard Beats
The Vietnamese sports delegation arrived at the country hosting the regional Olympic qualifiers after a long flight. An atmosphere of tension and excitement enveloped the entire delegation right from the first steps at the international airport. The three days of getting used to the field and climate conditions before the tournament officially started became a valuable time for the team to complete the final preparations.
The stadium where the qualifying round was held was modern and could accommodate tens of thousands of spectators, creating a great deal of psychological pressure for athletes competing in such a large arena for the first time. Vy stood in the middle of the practice field, looking up at the empty stands, trying to imagine the scene that would take place when thousands of spectators filled those rows of seats on the official match day.
"How does it feel?" Long asked, standing next to her, his eyes could not hide his shock at the majestic scale of the gymnasium.
"I'm both nervous and excited," Vy answered honestly. "I've never played on such a big stage."
"I haven't either," Long admitted, gently holding her hand. "But I believe, once the match starts, we will only focus on the ball and the opponent in front of us, no longer paying attention to the size of the stands."
The practice session to get used to the stadium went smoothly, the whole team quickly adapted to the typical light and wind conditions of the stadium. Coach Kiet and Tram continuously observed and took notes on small adjustments necessary to optimize competition tactics to suit the actual conditions at the venue.
The evening before the official opening day, the organizing committee held a welcoming ceremony for the participating delegations, gathering athletes from all countries in the region. This is also an opportunity for Vy and Long to face directly for the first time with the number two seeded couple from Thailand - the potential opponents they may face in the semi-finals.
"Hello everyone," one of the two Thai athletes approached, smiling friendly and speaking fluent English. "We watched you guys compete at international tournaments before. Very impressive."
"Thank you," Vy replied in English that was not too fluent but enough for basic communication. "We also admire your performance very much."
That short but friendly conversation partly helped relieve psychological tension against an opponent that was previously only known through dry analytical videos. Both sides exchanged a few stories about their training journeys and common difficulties that any professional athlete must go through, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect even though they were about to face each other on the field.
The next morning, the first official day of competition began with the group stage. The Vy - Long couple was placed in a group with two relatively strong opponents, creating favorable conditions for them to advance deep into the next round without having to face too much pressure from the beginning.
The first group stage match went smoothly, the Vietnamese couple won overwhelmingly with a well-coordinated playing style that had been honed through many months of hard practice. The second match also ended with the same result, officially sending Vy and Long into the knock-out round at the top of the group, an unexpectedly favorable start.
"Perfect start," coach Kiet commented after two matches, unable to hide his satisfaction. "But from the knockout round onwards, everything will be much more difficult. We are not allowed to relax even for a minute."
That evening, when returning to the hotel, Vy and Long took the opportunity to call home and share the good news with their family. Vy's mother, even though she did not understand the rules of the competition, could not hide her joy and pride when she heard that her daughter had won her first matches at such an important international tournament.
"I'm so proud of you," she said over the phone, her voice filled with emotion. "Do your best, my daughter."
"I will try my best, mom," Vy replied, a bright smile on her lips even though she was tired after a stressful day of competition. "I will bring good news to mom."
Hanging up the phone, Vy turned to look at Long, the two exchanged looks full of determination before the bigger challenges that lay ahead - the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and possibly even the breathtaking final, where the ticket to the Olympics will be officially decided.
On the day off between the group stage and the quarterfinals, the whole team took advantage of the time to recover physically, while continuing to carefully review the tactics for the next opponent - a veteran couple from Indonesia, famous for their patient playing style and rich experience in international matches.
"This pair is completely different from the style of previous opponents," Tram analyzed in the morning tactical meeting, pointing to the detailed statistics table. "They are not in a hurry to score points, but patiently wait for the opponent to make mistakes. If you are impatient, it is easy to fall into their tactical trap."
"So what do we need to do to break that patience?" Long asked, attentively taking notes.
"Continuously change the tempo," Tram replied, "alternating between fast, strong shots and slow, delicate shots. The unpredictability will make it difficult for them to maintain their inherent patience."
The whole team spent the entire afternoon practicing the new strategy, accurately simulating the playing style of their Indonesian opponents. Even though they were tired after the group stage matches, Vy and Long still put all their heart and soul into each exercise, determined not to leave any loopholes that could be exploited by their opponents.
In the evening, after a light meal with the team, Vy took the opportunity to walk alone around the hotel area to relax her mind after a long and stressful day. Long, realizing her absence, quickly chased after her, finding her standing quietly watching the strange city at night from a small balcony.
"What are you thinking?" he asked, standing next to her, his eyes gentle.
"I'm thinking about the journey that brought us here," Vy replied, her voice thoughtful. "From two rivals on the field, to reluctant partners, and now a couple conquering the Olympic dream together. Everything happens so fast that sometimes I still can't believe it's real."
"I feel the same way," Long admitted, placing his arm gently around her shoulders. "But I believe, everything happens for a reason. Without that first training session full of collisions, perhaps we would never have had the opportunity to understand each other so deeply."
"You're right," Vy smiled, resting her head on his shoulder. "Sometimes, the hardest beginnings lead to the most beautiful results."
The two of them stood there, looking at the strange city sparkling with lights at night, their souls filled with peace and determination before the important challenges that lay ahead, ready to write the next chapter in the meaningful journey that they had both built together.
The quarterfinals took place the next morning. As expected, the Indonesian opponent played with a patient and clever style of play, exactly as Tram had analyzed. In the first set, the couple Vy - Long had many difficulties in finding the right pace, losing by a narrow margin.
During the halftime break, Coach Kiet reiterated the previously agreed upon strategy. "Change the tempo now. Don't let them dictate the game as they wish."
Vy nodded and took a deep breath to regain composure. In the second set, she and Long began to apply a strategy of alternating tempo, sometimes rushing with powerful smashes, sometimes suddenly switching to delicate drops right next to the net, making the Indonesian opponent unable to adapt.
The strategy was clearly effective, the Vietnamese couple gradually prevailed, winning the second set convincingly, bringing the match to the deciding set. The third set was tense down to every point, but thanks to careful preparation and a resilient playing spirit, Vy and Long finally won the final round, officially entering the semi-finals - where the next opponents were the number two seeded couple from Thailand that they had met in the previous welcome ceremony.
"We did it!" Vy screamed with excitement when the match ended, hugging Long amid the cheers of the stands.
"Only two more matches left," Long replied, his eyes sparkling with determination. "We are closer to our Olympic dream than ever before."
The whole team celebrated the victory with joy, but everyone clearly understood that the biggest challenge - the tough semi-final against the strongest opponent in the region - was still waiting ahead, requiring more concentration than ever from the entire team.
