Chapter 23
Chapter 23 — Bridge Yard Beats
The Olympic semi-final took place two days after the historic victory over the Indonesian couple, with the opponents being the second-seeded pair from Japan - experienced athletes with sophisticated technical play and extremely fast ball handling speed that have caused many strong opponents to give up.
Before the match, Coach Kiet gathered the whole team for a final strategy meeting. His eyes were full of seriousness but he could not hide his pride at what his students had achieved. "No matter what the outcome of this match," he said, "you guys are guaranteed to bring home at least one historic bronze medal for the Vietnamese sports team. But I believe you can go even further."
"We will try our best, teacher," Long replied, his eyes steady. "We want to bring home the brightest colored medal possible."
The match took place in an extremely tense atmosphere, the stands were filled with spectators from all over the world, creating a huge psychological pressure for both teams. The Japanese pair, as expected, showed incredible ball handling speed right from the first minutes, continuously causing difficulties for Vietnam's defense.
The first set ended in defeat for Vy and Long. Even though they tried their best, they still couldn't keep up with their opponents' breakneck speed. During the halftime break, coach Kiet and Tram quickly adjusted their tactics.
"We need to slow down the pace of the match," Tram analyzed quickly, her voice full of urgency. "Don't try to go head-to-head with their speed. Use subtle drops, forcing them to move more, slowing down the pace they're imposing."
Vy and Long listened and quickly adjusted their playing strategy in the second set. Instead of trying to compete head-on in terms of speed, they switched to a more variable style of play, alternating between powerful attacks and subtle drops right next to the net, forcing their opponents to constantly change their pace of movement.
The new strategy was clearly effective, helping the Vietnamese couple gradually regain the initiative, winning the second set convincingly, bringing the match to the deciding set amid the extreme excitement of the stands.
The third set opened with caution from both sides, each side clearly understanding the importance of each score in the match that decides the ticket to the Olympic final. The Japanese couple, after being caught playing speed tactics, were forced to adjust their playing style, creating a battle of wits that was no less intense than a battle of strength.
In the middle of the set, the score was closely tied, neither side was willing to give way. Long, as the defensive mainstay, continuously made spectacular saves, while Vy made the most of every smallest opportunity to launch decisive shots. The smooth coordination between the two, forged through hundreds of hours of practice, is clearly shown in the most stressful moments.
"We're doing great," Long whispered to Vy during a brief break between shots. "If we just keep focused, we can do it."
At point twenty, Vy made a delicate drop right next to the net, leaving her Japanese opponent unable to save her despite her best efforts. That score put the Vietnamese couple ahead, creating an important psychological advantage in the final decisive moments.
The Japanese opponent, under increasing psychological pressure with each score, began to make small mistakes in the next phases. Seizing that rare opportunity, Long made a powerful shot from the back of the court, the ball crashed straight into the opponent's corner, officially ending the match with the final victory belonging to the Vietnamese couple.
The referee immediately confirmed the result, and the entire arena exploded in endless, passionate cheers. Vy and Long stood still for a moment, unable to believe what had really happened, before running to hug each other in the middle of the field, tears of happiness rolling down their faces.
"We're really in the Olympic finals!" Vy shouted, her voice almost breaking from extreme emotion. "We've secured the silver medal, Long!"
"No, we still have a chance to win the gold medal!" Long replied, hugging her even tighter, his eyes sparkling with strong belief. "We will fight hard in the final."
On the stage, coach Kiet and Mr. Trinh Bao Son hugged each other, unable to hide their tears of happiness at the achievement that far exceeded all the initial expectations that the Vietnamese sports team had set for this Olympics.
"This is truly unbelievable," Mr. Son said, his voice choked with emotion. "No Vietnamese badminton player has ever gone this far in the Olympic arena."
"And you still have a chance to go further," Coach Kiet replied, his eyes filled with pride as he watched the two students hugging and celebrating in the middle of the field, mentally preparing for the upcoming historic final.
At the press conference after the match, international reporters once again surrounded the Vietnamese couple, unable to hide their surprise at the magical journey they had just created. "Just a year ago, you two were competing in separate singles competitions," a reporter commented. "What helped you two create such a successful union in such a short time?"
"I think the key lies in absolute trust in each other," Vy replied, her voice filled with sincerity. "We are different in style, but that difference helps us perfectly complement each other on the field."
"And off the field too," Long added, a warm smile appearing at the corner of his mouth, making the reporters couldn't help but laugh at that sweetness.
That evening, before resting to prepare for the final two days later, Coach Kiet gathered the team to announce the final opponent - none other than the Chinese couple they had lost to by a narrow margin in the group stage.
"This will be a meaningful rematch," Coach Kiet said, his voice full of seriousness. "This time, you have more experience and better understanding of their playing style. I believe, you have the opportunity to change the outcome."
"We will put all our heart and soul into this match," Long replied, his eyes determined. "This is an opportunity to prove that failure in the group stage is just a lesson, not destiny."
Tram spent the entire evening carefully analyzing the previous group stage match, pointing out every small weakness that the Chinese pair successfully exploited. "Last time, they lost because they lacked experience in handling long balls, which require a lot of patience," she explained. "But now, after all the matches they went through in this tournament, they have become a lot more mature."
Vy listened attentively, carefully recording every important tactical detail. "I believe, this time we are ready to confront them fairly," she said, her voice filled with determination.
The night before the final, Vy and Long spent private time mentally preparing, sitting together on the small balcony of the athletes' village, watching the starry night sky. "Tomorrow, no matter the outcome," Long said, squeezing her hand, "I want you to know, this has been the most wonderful journey of my life, not only because of the achievements, but because I had the opportunity to go through it with you."
"Me too," Vy replied, resting her head on his shoulder, her heart filled with peace before the most important match of both of their playing careers, ready to continue writing the meaningful final chapter of this magical journey.
Before leaving the balcony to return to his room to rest, Long took out the small notebook that had followed him throughout the season from his shirt pocket and flipped to the last blank page. "I want to write something here, before our most important match," he said, picking up a pen to scribble a few lines.
"What are you writing?" Vy asked curiously, trying to look over his shoulder.
Long smiled and closed the notebook before she could read it. "Secret," he replied, his eyes sparkling with rare mischief. "You'll find out after the match tomorrow."
Vy was curious but didn't ask further, just smiled at that lovely mystery. They both stood up, held hands and walked back to the resting room, their hearts filled with excitement and nervousness before the historic match that would take place tomorrow - the Olympic final that both had worked tirelessly throughout a long and arduous journey to reach, a journey that they both believed would be talked about for many years to come.
