Chapter 22
Chapter 22 — The House She Left Behind
Mother said the old does not go, the new does not come. I hung the pearl of peace on the new key. Previously, I thought that keeping the house was preserving the memories my grandmother left behind. Later I learned that what really had to be kept was the boundary that was not forced by love, debt, pity and fear. That small, old apartment no longer exists. But my mother and I finally walked out that old door.
The people around her shared a quiet laugh, and the warmth of that ordinary moment softened every old worry. Looking back, she understood that the long road had not been wasted: each misunderstanding had led them closer to the life they now chose together. With that thought, the story reached its gentle conclusion, leaving the promise of tomorrow in their hands.
