Chapter 7 — The Star Growers
The intergenerational class was opened on the roof of the old school because the ground was being repaired in the yard. Adults sit next to children, each person receives a tray with copper wire, filter membrane and a piece of paper saying "not a toy". Thao Nhi calls it a common time, not a class because the adults don't want to be taught and the children don't want to be tested.
Mien stood in front of the board, without using a speaker. I raised my hand to signal, then showed the symbol. Translate each item in large letters: see, touch, record, report.
“If you can't hear the whistle?” an old man asked.
Mien pointed to the vibration box on the table. The box vibrates once for a light wind, twice for a change of wind, and three times when the person in charge needs to be called. She doesn't speak for everyone. I let the listeners try it by hand.
Cu held the box and felt three beats. “What if I'm repairing a machine and my hands are full of oil?”
Mien wrote: “Lights.”
Lam placed a yellow lamp next to it. It changes color according to the same signal. Kha asked if it was bright outside, the lights would be difficult to see. Mien pointed to the reflective fabric strip tied on the stake.
“Have you thought it all through?” Kha asked.
Mien shrugged and wrote: "I live because of other people's mistakes."
The words made the whole class quiet. Ha did not correct it. She just said that the warning system needs to have enough access so as not to force disabled people to wait for someone to take care of them.
The lesson begins with general measurements. The three groups used the same reference machine, located next to two stations: the school roof and Mrs. Mui's house. The temperature is 0.9 degrees different, the humidity is 4% different, and the roof wind is clearly higher. A group of elders said that Mrs. Mui's machine was broken because it was near vegetables. Mien shook her head, drawing an arrow from the ground to the roof.
"Low stations close to the ground see a layer of moisture. High stations see wind," Lam explained.
“So why call both of them weather?”
“Because the weather is not at one altitude.”
Thao Nhi pulled a coil of wire from the dome to two stations, connecting them on the map. She said learners do not need to understand the algorithm, but need to know that two different numbers can be both correct.
Below, a group of children play with kites. The kite string is stuck to the station pole. Kha ran down, but Lam told him to stop. Kite players say the newly built poles make the beach cramped. The twelve year old boy asked who gave permission to plant stars on the field.
“Community,” Lam replied.
"I'm also a community. I don't agree."
Lam sat down with him. She didn't say the station was more important than the kite. She asked him where he wanted to deposit. He pointed out an open area near the wall, where the wind was low but the rope was not entangled. The receiving station switches there, the data is still useful because there is an additional terrain type.
“What if everyone objects?” Cu asked.
“Then look elsewhere,” Lam said.
“What if there's no more room?”
“Not planted yet.”
Kha looked at her, as if to say that data cannot wait for unlimited consent. Lam understood, but did not change his sentence. If Star Garden grows by encroaching on someone else's space, it will be just another project dressed up as a community.
At noon, the two stations gave opposite results. Ms. Mui's home station measured salinity increased by 0.12, the school station was almost stable. The other three roof stations fluctuate. Bach sent a message asking if the filter sensor was covered with salt.
Lam checked. Mrs. Mui's filter had a thin white layer on it, but not enough to make a mistake. Mien used a magnifying glass to point out the crystals clinging to one side, in the same direction as the wind. She wrote: “The pattern is not even.”
“You mean oblique salt rain?”
Mien nodded.
Take the sample with a clean stick. Cu brought a mesh bag to the roof and rinsed it in a black basin. There is no dust at the school station, but on the roof of Mrs. Mui's house there are tiny white particles. Slight metallic smell.
Thao Nhi asked if it was true due to the village's salt stove. Ha said testing is needed, but the attachment location shows that the seeds follow the wind and do not fall evenly.
Lam sent the photo to Bach, with an unknown caption. Bach replied after thirty minutes: "Maybe aerosol from the reflecting lagoon or salt dust; need a control sample from outside the area."
Cu read the news and said he would send the ship out. Lam objected because there was no plan.
“You just need to measure the scent and direction of the fish,” she said.
“That's what I do every day.”
“Do not include ball release devices.”
“I don't want to drag a ball along.”
"Good."
Mien drew three points on the map: salt hut, reflecting roof, fish turning area. I want to add an eighth station on a moored raft. Kha said that installing a station on a raft is difficult and the rope can easily get entangled. Cu said he had a way.
“But the device must be water-resistant,” Cu said.
“Don't plant on a raft if you haven't tried it,” Lam replied.
Mien looked at her and wrote: "Try a little."
“Where is Tiny?”
“Salt water basin.”
Ha laughed. “She's making us do an experiment before going to the beach.”
They spent the afternoon on a small test. Three station housings, three types of membranes, a basin of water mixed with different concentrations. Record the salt adhesion time, Kha measure the buoyancy, Cu test the vibration. No one calls the results forecasts.
When it got dark, the type B membrane kept the signal well but the fan blade stuck after 40 minutes. Membrane C is light, but the shell is bulging. Membrane A is the most stable, not the cheapest.
“Choose A,” Cu said.
“Not enough materials,” Lam replied.
“Choose to fix it.”
Thao Nhi suggested recording the failure rate, not just the good grades. She said that if the center later asks why the community network uses inconsistent materials, they must have an answer.
Mien typed on the board: “Error data is also data.”
Lam nodded.
That night, Van Suong organized a meal on the school roof. The adults brought braised fish, the children brought vegetables, and Ha brought a medicine box. The star particle V-19 appears on the screen as a yellow dot. No one sees it as a real star, but everyone calls it by name.
“Sao Truong,” Han said.
“Why Ba Mui,” Ti said.
“Sao Cu,” Cu protested. “I don't want to hang names.”
“I signed for the station,” Lam said.
“Signing does not mean naming.”
Thao Nhi opened the list. "The device name is not the owner's name. Call by place, not by person."
Finally, the stations are named according to the terrain: Roof, Rau, Choi, Workshop, Station, Dome. V-20 lost contact not erased; it says Drifting Star.
After the meal, a boy asked Lam if he was a star grower or someone who knew how to fly. Lam said the person who grows stars is the person who knows he cannot see everything.
Cu listened and replied: "And you still planted it even though you knew that."
A siren sounded from the shore, not a warning. A transport ship passes through the Thin Clouds area, lights reflected on the floating roof. A strip of white dust flew towards the village, thin as mist.
Ha stood up and closed the sea-side door of the classroom. She didn't call the speaker, just turned on the vibrating box and sent a light signal.
Three beats.
Everyone understands that it's time to check the filter cloth and clean water.
Lam looked at the board and wrote down the source: Choi station, eye observation, sample on the school roof; certainty level: medium; work: close the sea side, do not evacuate.
Mien read, pointing to the "recipient" section. They walked around, touching each vibrating box, marking who had received it.
One man did not want to accept it, saying the village was overdoing it. Ha does not force. She placed a towel next to his door, saying that if she changed her mind, she could take it.
When everyone returned, Lam opened the data warehouse. She saw nine packets at the same time but two were blank. One is from the hut, the other from the roof of Mrs. Mui's house. Both are located on the northwest wind side.
Not a wrong sensor.
But it's still not enough to call a storm.
Lam added in the notebook: "A distance of 300 meters can be the boundary of a wind layer."
Right below, Mien wrote in pencil: “Or the edge of something in the sea.”
In the distance, Thin Cloud's reflective roof lit up again. No one in the village knew what it was doing to the sky.
Thao Nhi did not let the students disperse after seeing the data line bending. She divided them into three groups. The first group stood at the lagoon, the second group stood near the field, and the third group stood at the school roof. Each group had to describe the same time period in three ways: figures, images, and skin sensations. She forbids the use of the word "clear" unless it is clearly accompanied by someone.
One boy said the field station must be broken because it was off the roof station. Another friend said maybe the field is the correct place to measure. The two children argued until Ha gave them both masks that had been weighed before and after the observation. One holds more dust. That doesn't prove wind direction, but proves the difference between the two can be in the actual air and not just in the machine.
Mien gives each group a beat. I teach how to report "no signal received", which is different from "zero signal". When a box vibrates silently, the user must tap twice to confirm they have tried. No one is allowed to enter the number 0 just because the screen has no numbers. That little rule makes the data table less beautiful, but the space becomes meaningful.
Lam brought rice to the roof. People eat between coils of wire, talking about very everyday things: bean prices, school fees, a leaky corrugated iron roof. Data doesn't turn them into people who only live for the weather. On the contrary, because they have to protect those things, they need to know what the sky is doing.
Before going down, Thao Nhi asked each student to put a question on the map. There is a saying "Does the wind remember the road?", There is a saying "Does the smell of salt go fast or does the person who recognizes it go fast?", There is a saying "If two stations disagree, who gets to sit in the middle?". She did not correct any sentences. She said a good monitoring network must withstand questions from people who haven't learned all the terminology.
That night, Lam sent the first memo signed by the entire group of students. Bach responded that some observations cannot be quantified. Lam replied: "Just because it can't be quantified doesn't mean it can't be recorded." She looked at the data stream of the two rooftops, each line telling a different story, and saw that it was that discrepancy that was helping Van Suong find the true shape of the low sky.
