Chapter 23 — The Sweet Taste After Criticism

Two weeks after the investigative article shocked public opinion, lawyer Khoa brought to Banh Nang shop the news that the whole neighborhood had been waiting for for many months.

“I just received the official notice,” he said, his voice unable to hide his excitement, “the corporation behind the project has decided to completely cancel the development plan for this area, after suffering too much pressure from public opinion and legal risks arising from Dat Long's case.”

Mai stood speechless at that news, it took a few seconds to say anything. “Really…cancel it completely?”

"That's right," lawyer Khoa nodded, showing her the official notice, "they committed to not continuing any survey or land collection activities in this area anymore. This is a complete victory, not only for Banh Nang shop, but for the whole community."

The news spread quickly throughout the alley in just a few minutes, cheers of joy rang out from every house, people poured out into the street, hugging each other in bursts of happiness after many months of living in insecurity, fear of losing the home that had been with them all their lives.

Mai immediately ran to Uncle Tu's car repair shop, the first person she wanted to share this good news with. "Uncle, the project has been canceled, I don't have to worry about being cleared anymore!"

Uncle Tu, upon hearing the news, could not hide his emotional tears. "Thank you, thank you to your whole group. If it weren't for you guys standing up to fight, the whole neighborhood would probably be destroyed by now."

In the afternoon, the whole alley spontaneously held a small party right on the street, each family contributed a dish, together celebrating victory after a long and arduous journey. Laughter, music, and congratulations echoed everywhere, creating a more natural and sincere festive atmosphere than any properly organized event.

Kien stood next to Mai in the bustling atmosphere, his arm lightly wrapped around her shoulder, his eyes looking around at the joyful scene of the whole neighborhood with an indescribable pride.

“Look,” he said, his voice filled with emotion, “everything we've been through has ultimately led to this moment.”

“That's right,” Mai replied, resting her head on his shoulder, “I didn't think I could be this happy, after everything that's happened since the day you walked into the shop and wrote your first review.”

Kien laughed and hugged her tighter. "I didn't expect that that bad review would be the beginning of the most beautiful story of my life."

In the middle of the party, Ms. Nga stood up and lightly tapped the glass to attract everyone's attention. "Dear people," she said, her voice trembling with emotion, "today, I want to thank everyone for uniting together and protecting our common home. In particular, I want to thank my daughter and Mr. Kien, who did not hesitate to lead the whole neighborhood through this storm."

The applause rang out loudly, everyone simultaneously turned their eyes towards Mai and Kien, making both of them feel embarrassed by this unexpected attention.

“I just do what I think is right,” Mai said, her voice choked up, “without the solidarity of my whole neighborhood, I definitely can't do anything alone.”

The party lasted until late at night, everyone reviewed memorable memories during the recent turbulent journey, both joyful laughter and happy tears, marking a brighter new chapter for this beloved Banh Nang alley.

In the middle of the party, Tung suddenly climbed onto a plastic chair, holding a small microphone borrowed from a portable speaker system, his voice excitedly announcing. "Everyone, I have special news to share. Mr. Kien's public love video on Sunny Cake Festival has just reached the five million view mark, becoming the video with the highest views in the history of 'Vi Giac Tru' channel!"

The whole crowd roared with excitement, and the applause rang out again. Kien blushed at this unexpected attention, while Mai couldn't help but laugh at her lover's rare awkward expression.

“See,” Linh interjected, her voice filled with pride, “I told you, your love story will be famous all over the internet.”

"Don't overdo it," Mai smiled, gently pushing her best friend's shoulder, even though inside she couldn't hide her joy at the warm reception from the online community.

Uncle Tu, standing nearby, heard the story and joined in with a witty joke. "So thanks to our neighborhood's tiny bakery, the whole country knows about this Ben alley. Look out for the crowds of tourists coming tomorrow, we have to consider expanding the shop soon."

The whole crowd had a hearty laugh at that humorous tease, the festival atmosphere was even more bustling and warmer than ever, when all the anxiety and tension of the past turbulent days have now been completely replaced by joy, solidarity and even crisp laughter echoing throughout this small but meaningful alley.

Late that night, when the guests gradually left, Mai and Kien separated from the crowd and walked along the alley that was now quiet again, with only a few scattered lights from the houses that were not sleeping. They stopped in front of the Sun Cake shop, looking at the familiar sign in the moonlight.

“I think,” Mai said, her voice thoughtful, “now that all the big storms are over, maybe it's time for me to think about expanding the store, like Uncle Tu said earlier.”

“I think that's a great idea,” Kien replied, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, “with the reputation the shop has earned, along with your wonderful family recipe, I'm sure it will be a success.”

“But I don't want the shop to lose its rustic, familiar nature,” Mai said, her eyes looking far away at the alley, “no matter how much it expands, I still want to keep the spirit that my mother built from the first days.”

“I believe you can do it,” Kien said, gently squeezing her shoulder, “because you always know how to balance tradition and innovation, just like how you balance your mother's family recipe and my suggestions.”

Mai smiled, leaned her head on his shoulder, clearly feeling a rare complete peace after many tumultuous days, filled with hope for the bright plans that were gradually forming for the future of both the bakery and the relationship between the two.

“I have an idea,” Kien said after a moment of silence, his voice somewhat reserved, “I was thinking, instead of continuing to be a strict reviewer like before, maybe I should redirect my channel to a different type of content — not to criticize, but to celebrate small restaurants, family recipes is gradually being forgotten in this era of industrialized fast food.”

Mai looked up at him, her eyes shining with excitement. “That idea is so great. So will you become a storyteller for other Sun Cakes across the country?”

“That's right,” Kien nodded, “I think, after everything I've been through, I realize that the real value lies not in pointing out what's wrong, but in helping people see and appreciate the good things that exist around them, even though they are sometimes obscured by small shortcomings.”

“I support you wholeheartedly,” Mai said, holding his hand tightly, “and I believe, with your inherent dedication, this new direction will bring even more meaningful things to the community.”

They stood there for a while longer under the moonlight, hand in hand, dreaming together of a future where they would both continue to accompany, not only in love, but also in a common mission - preserving and honoring sincere, rustic culinary values in an increasingly hurried and bustling world.

Before saying goodbye so everyone could go home, Kien gently kissed Mai's forehead, his voice whispering affectionately. “Thank you, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this beautiful story, both about love and about the meaning of life that I have lost for many years.”

“Thank you,” Mai replied, looking up at him with eyes full of love, “for constantly being by my side through every storm, and for helping me realize that sometimes the most straightforward criticism is the beginning of the sweetest things.”

They stood there for a long time under the late moonlight, not needing to say anything more, simply enjoying the complete peace after a long and challenging journey, before Kien saw Mai off into the house and then left, leaving the small alley to fall into a peaceful sleep, carrying bright hopes for the days ahead.
