Chapter 26 — The Sweet Taste After Criticism

Updated 10/08/2026 7 min read

Two months after their romantic date by the river, Mai officially embarked on a plan to expand Banh Nang shop, with Kien's close companion in every stage of preparation. Thanks to the money accumulated from the months of prosperous business after the incident with Dat Long, plus Kien's consulting support in terms of operations, the expansion plan gradually took shape in a more methodical and professional way than before.

“I want to keep the original space,” Mai explained to the construction team, pointing to the design drawing that she and Kien had drafted together over many nights, “just expand the back area to have more open seating for customers, and a small corner displaying the shop's three-generation history.”

"The idea is very good," Kien commented, standing next to her observing the drawing, "both preserving the traditional identity and meeting the growing needs of customers. I think, I should also consider adding an open kitchen, so customers can directly observe the baking process, creating a more interesting experience."

“I like that idea,” Mai nodded, adding notes to the plan, “as a way to share the story behind each cake with customers, not just simply selling.”

The renovation process took place for nearly a month, with the enthusiastic participation of the entire neighborhood - Uncle Tu helped supervise the electricity and water, neighbor Ms. Suong commented on how to arrange the space to suit feng shui, and even the children in the neighborhood eagerly came to see the construction progress every day, considering it an interesting event for the whole community.

While the shop was temporarily closed for repairs, Mai and Kien spent more time researching and developing new recipes, combining the methodical baking techniques that Kien learned in France with Mai's family's rustic family recipes.

“I think,” Mai said, one afternoon the two of them experimenting with a new type of cake in the makeshift kitchen, “we should create a special product line, combining both styles, named 'Companion Collection' — symbolizing our journey.”

“Great idea,” Kien replied, tasting the just completed batch of cakes, nodding with satisfaction, “this cake taste is really special, has the sophistication of European techniques but still retains the rustic, familiar flavor of Vietnam.”

They spent hours in the kitchen, testing recipe after recipe, sometimes arguing fiercely about ingredient ratios, sometimes laughing at their funny failures, but through it all, the feelings between the two of them grew closer and closer, as if they were born to complement each other perfectly.

In the evening, when the testing work had stopped, they sat and rested on the familiar bench, watching the renovation work gradually take shape ahead.

“How do you feel about everything that's going on?” Kien asked, putting his arm around her shoulder.

"I'm happy," Mai replied, resting her head on his shoulder, "not only because the shop is growing, but because I have you accompanying me in every decision, every challenge. It feels like, no matter what happens next, we will get through it together."

“I feel the same way,” Kien said, gently squeezing her shoulder, “and I believe that our future will have many more wonderful things waiting for us.”

The official reopening date is set for later month, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of Mai officially taking over the store from her mother. The whole group decided to turn this event into a special occasion, not simply to open a new space, but also to express gratitude to all the alley residents who have accompanied them throughout the recent turbulent journey.

“Should I invite the journalist who wrote the investigative article to attend?” Tung proposed in the planning meeting, “so that he can see the positive results from the efforts we have built together.”

"Good idea," Mai nodded, "also, I should invite Thao Vy's family too. Even though the engagement has ended peacefully, the friendship between the two families still needs to be maintained and respected."

Linh, sitting writing down the guest list, looked up with mischievous eyes. “So how long is the guest list, including journalists, both families, neighbors, and Mr. Kien's online fans?”

“There must be a limit to the number,” Kien laughed, “otherwise, we would have to rent the whole street to accommodate all the guests.”

The whole group laughed at that humorous prospect, the atmosphere preparing for the opening day was filled with excitement and anticipation, as an affirmation that the journey of Sun Cake shop, despite having gone through many ups and downs, is now entering a new chapter full of promise, with the companionship of not only Mai's family, but also a large community that has stood together through every difficulty.

In the last days before opening, Mai and Kien spent almost all their time at the shop, perfecting the smallest details — from rearranging the corner displaying the shop's three generations of history, to the final testing of new recipes in the "Companion Collection".

“Where do you think we should put this?” Mai asked, holding in her hand an old family photo frame taken from the first days the store opened, wondering about the appropriate position in the new display corner.

“I think it should be placed in the center,” Kien suggested, “so that anyone who walks in can immediately see and fully feel the meaningful three-life story behind this bakery.”

Mai followed his suggestion, placed the photo frame in the center, and stepped back to look at the overall display corner with proud eyes. Besides the family photo frame, she also hung her mother's carefully framed recipe book, along with the first article written about the shop's story after the incident with Dat Long, creating a vivid timeline recounting the entire emotional journey.

"It's so beautiful," Ms. Nga said, when she stopped by to check on the progress of preparations, her eyes filled with tears of emotion when she saw the display corner, "I never thought that one day, my family's story would be told in such a solemn and meaningful way."

“That's thanks to Mr. Kien's advice, mom,” Mai said, smiling and looking at Kien, “he always knows how to turn the simplest things into meaningful stories.”

Ms. Nga looked at them both with gentle, contented eyes, clearly feeling that Sunny Cake Shop is now not just a place to make a living, but has become a living symbol of an inspiring story of love, family, and community.

The night before the opening day, when all the preparations were completed, Mai stood alone in the middle of the new shop space, looking at every small corner that had been arranged. meticulous and careful. Warm yellow light shines throughout the room, reflecting on the precious memorabilia in the display corner, creating a scene that is both nostalgic and full of hope.

Kien walked over and stood next to her, quietly admiring the results of many days of effort. “Tomorrow will be an important day,” he said, his voice deep.

“I'm a little nervous,” Mai admitted, “not knowing how people will receive this change.”

“I believe everyone will love it,” Kien reassured, putting his arm around her shoulder, “because you did everything with all your heart, keeping the spirit of the shop while still bringing new, more exciting experiences.”

Mai leaned her head on his shoulder, looking around at this familiar yet new space, filled with a feeling of deep gratitude. “Thank you,” she said, “for always being by my side, accompanying me every step of the way, from the first turbulent days until now.”

“That's the most natural thing I can do,” Kien replied, kissing the top of her head lightly, “because I love you, and love the wonderful story you've created from a small bakery in this alley.”

They stood there for a while longer, enjoying the peace before the big day, dreaming together of the good things that lay ahead, not only for Sunny Cake shop, but for the whole journey that they were both building together.

Before leaving, Kien stopped at the display corner and looked at Mai's old family photo again. “I have an idea,” he said, turning to look at her, “who knows, one day, I'll have a new family photo to add to this display too.”

Mai immediately understood what he meant, her face turned red. “What are you talking about?”

“Just an idea,” Kien smiled, without explaining further, just holding her hand, his eyes filled with a sweet promise that both of them implicitly understood, even though no one had said it out loud.

Mai didn't ask more, just smiled, squeezed his hand, letting that moment naturally settle, bringing with it a silent hope for the good things waiting in the not-so-distant future, when their love story, after all the storms that have passed, is now gradually moving towards a new, more complete chapter than ever.
