Chapter 25 — The Sweet Taste After Criticism

Updated 10/08/2026 7 min read

To mark half a year since the fateful review appeared, Kien secretly planned a special date, not telling Mai any details in advance, only telling her to spend the entire Saturday night with him.

“What are you planning to do so secretly?” Mai asked, curious all week, but Kien just smiled mysteriously, determined not to reveal.

At exactly seven o'clock on Saturday night, Kien came to pick Mai up, taking her to a place beyond her imagination - a small riverside cafe, where they had their first proper date after the fateful rainy night.

“Do you remember this place?” Mai asked, emotional when she recognized the familiar place.

“How could I forget,” Kien replied, leading her to a private corner that had been specially decorated with candles and flowers, “this is where we had our first date, where I realized I truly loved you, without any doubt.”

They sat down, enjoyed a romantic dinner under the flickering candlelight, reviewing the entire tumultuous yet happy journey that the two had gone through together for the past half a year.

“Do you know,” Kien said, after finishing dinner, his voice becoming unusually serious, “when I wrote that first review, I never thought it would lead to such a life-changing journey.”

“Me too,” Mai replied, smiling, “I used to think you were the most unpleasant person I'd ever met, but now you're the most important person in my life.”

Kien smiled, then pulled out a small box from his pocket, not a wedding ring as Mai thought briefly in her mind, but a delicate silver bracelet, engraved with a small inscription: "The sweetness after criticism."

"I'm not ready to propose right now," Kien said, his voice sincere, "because I want everything to happen at the right time, mature enough for both of us to be ready for that important turning point. But I want to give you this gift, as a commitment that, even though the road ahead is long, I will always accompany you, through all the sweet and bitter things."

Mai held the bracelet, tears suddenly flowing from her eyes at that sincerity and thoughtfulness. “Thank you,” she said, her voice choked up, “this gift means more than anything I have ever received.”

Kien put the bracelet on her wrist, then lifted her hand and placed a gentle kiss on it. “I promise,” he said, his eyes filled with love, “to always be by your side, to protect you, and to build with you the future we both deserve.”

They sat together until late at night, looking at the river sparkling with reflected city lights, fully enjoying this happy moment, without any need for any more flowery promises, because the sincere love that the two of them had cultivated together for the past half a year, spoke for itself.

On the way home, Mai leaned her head on Kien's shoulder, her heart filled with an unprecedented feeling of peace and happiness. She looked down at the sparkling bracelet on her wrist, thinking to herself that the journey from a disastrous review to this sweet moment was truly a story that she would never forget, and she believed that the next chapters of that story would be even sweeter.

“Do you remember,” Mai asked, as the car stopped at an intersection waiting for a red light, “the first evening we sat here, I asked you if you ever thought about meeting again at this fateful moment?

“I remember,” Kien replied, smiling, “and now looking back, I'm even more convinced that this is exactly what fate had planned. If it weren't for that review, if it weren't for the day I happened to visit Banh Nang, I would definitely have missed the most important person in my life."

Mai smiled and gently squeezed his hand. “I think so too. Sometimes, the things that seem the worst are the most cleverly disguised gifts that life has to offer.”

They continued to chat on the way home, reviewing every small but memorable memory of the past half a year - from the burnt batch of cookies on the first day of cooperation, to the rainy night fixing the leaky roof, to even the times they argued between laughing and crying because of their opposite personalities. Each memory mentioned made both of them laugh, feeling more clearly than ever that their love was firmly built on a foundation of sincerity and understanding, not just temporary flowery words.

When the car stopped in front of Banh Nang shop, Kien got out, opened the door for Mai, and then walked her to the door like a gentleman. “Thank you for a wonderful evening,” he said, kissing her lightly on the forehead.

“Thank you for everything,” Mai replied, looking up at him with eyes filled with love, “for the gift, for this evening, and for always being yourself—honest, sincere, even if sometimes a little too honest to the point of making me mad.”

They both laughed at that loving tease, giving each other a sweet goodbye kiss before Kien left, leaving Mai standing there with a heart full of happiness, her hand still fondling the sparkling silver bracelet, symbolizing a love that had overcome many storms to bear fruit.

Entering the house, Mai saw Ms. Nga still awake, waiting for her daughter with a cup of hot tea in her hand. "What's wrong, son, what's so special about coming home so late today?" she asked, her eyes undisguisedly curious.

Mai sat down next to her mother, held up her wrist wearing a new silver bracelet, and told her the entire romantic evening. After listening, Ms. Nga's eyes sparkled with happiness mixed with pride.

“This guy Kien,” she said, holding her daughter's hand to look at the bracelet, “really knows how to make my daughter's heart flutter. The inscription on this is so meaningful.”

“I think so too, Mom,” Mai replied, her voice still filled with the happiness of the evening, “I never thought I could find such a perfect love, after everything that happened.”

"You deserve to be happy," Ms. Nga said, gently stroking her daughter's hair, her voice full of affection, "after all the hard work and sacrifices for the bakery and for the family, now is the time for you to enjoy your own achievements."

Mai put her head on her mother's shoulder, clearly feeling the warmth of motherly love mixed with the happiness of a couple's love, creating a feeling of completeness and fulfillment that she knew she would forever cherish and remember for the rest of her life.

“Mom,” Mai said, raising her head to look at her mother after a moment of silence, “what do you think dad, if he were still alive, would say about me and Kien?”

Ms. Nga pondered for a moment, her eyes distant, remembering her deceased husband when Mai was young. “Your father will definitely like Kien,” she said, her voice gentle, “your father always likes people who are straightforward and sincere, even though sometimes the way they express themselves is a bit rough. a little bit. I believe that your father will be proud of you, of how you have grown up and resiliently overcome all difficulties to maintain the bakery and find your own happiness."

Those words touched Mai, tears suddenly flowed from her eyes, not because of sadness, but because she felt the invisible presence of her late father in this happy moment, like a silent blessing from afar.

“I miss you, dad,” Mai whispered, resting her head on her mother's shoulder.

“Me too,” Ms. Nga replied, hugging her daughter tightly, “but I believe, your father is always watching and always proud of you, even though he cannot be there to witness these important moments directly.”

Mother and daughter sat embracing each other for a while longer in the quiet space of the small house, letting their emotions settle, before going to bed together, closing a day full of love and memorable memories that will forever remain in the hearts of both resilient women of the Banh Nang family.

Before going upstairs, Mai stopped by the small altar where her father's portrait was placed, lit a stick of incense, and stood quietly for a moment. “Dad,” she whispered, “I have found someone I truly trust and love. I hope you will bless us and make us always happy, and that Banh Nang shop will always be strong, just like how we built it together from the first difficult days."

The thin incense smoke rose, blending into the quiet air of the night, carrying the sincere prayers of a girl who had grown up through many trials. Mai stood there for a moment longer, clearly feeling a deep peace spreading throughout her soul, as if her father himself, from far away, was also smiling and witnessing his daughter's happiness.

She went upstairs and lay down on the bed, still wearing the silver bracelet Kien gave her, her heart filled with warm thoughts about the future. Half a year has passed since that fateful day, bringing with it many storms and tears, but also filled with love and valuable lessons about resilience, solidarity, and the true value of sincerity. Mai closed her eyes and fell asleep with a satisfied smile on her lips, ready to look forward to the next chapters of her life story, confident that, even though there were many unknowns ahead, she would never have to face them alone again.
