Chapter 17
Chapter 17 — The Wedding House Was Destroyed, I Want It All Back
“Hello comrade, I am Lam Niem.” I said clearly, pointing to the room number on the door, "tonight I was in the room resting, they knocked on the door one after another, cursing and threatening, I recorded and videoed it all, ready to provide."
“What nonsense are you talking about!” Chu Da's mother jumped up, her voice cracking again, "I came to beg you to sign the petition, you wanted to force my daughter to death, and you still—"
“Mrs. Zhou.” The police interrupted, "We are handling the case. If you continue to cause trouble, we will take you to the station immediately. Do you want to spend the night there?"
He turned back to look at me, his voice softer but still serious.
"Miss Lam, if it's convenient, you can come with us to the station to make a report. All audio and video recordings will be provided in one copy."
"Okay." I nodded, “my lawyer is on his way, we can come along.”
“Nem Niem.”
Tham Du's voice rang out from the end of the hallway. She carried her briefcase and walked quickly, her breathing was still rapid but her demeanor was still sharp as usual.
“Sorry, the road is a bit blocked.”
“Lawyer Tham.” The police recognized her, his face softened, "We are preparing to take everyone back to the station to work, please come with us."
"Okay." Tham Du nodded, then turned to me, "Go in and get the necessary documents, bring your phone, back up all your data to the cloud, I'm here, no need to worry."
I nodded, went back into the room, quickly changed into neat clothes, put my ID card, room card, two phones and some documents in my bag. Before stepping out, I looked back at the quiet room behind me. The sound of the door knocking just now seemed to still echo, but my heart gradually stabilized. There are storms that cannot be avoided... then step straight into the eye of the storm. The police station's lights were bright, the cold white light was so cold that it made people completely awake. We were separated to work separately, Tham Du and I were in one room, Chu Da and his family were in another room, and the other man was called to a separate room to give testimony. The police asked very carefully, from the moment they knocked on the door, to the entire breakup process, and even the incident where the apartment was previously destroyed. I answered each question, trying to keep my voice calm, just presenting the facts, without adding emotions. Every time I came to an important point, Tham Du would gently knock on the table to remind me to pay attention to word usage, or add necessary details. The audio and video recordings are played back multiple times on the screen. Chu Da's mother's screams, Chu Da's threats, my reaction - all were so clear that they couldn't be denied. At that moment, I suddenly felt lucky because I was used to saving everything. Otherwise, faced with such overwhelming emotions, perhaps I would have been carried away, taking steps back step by step... until there was no way back. When the minutes were completed, it was almost two o'clock in the morning. Chu Da's mother was severely warned for disruptive behavior, forced to leave at night and pledged not to do it again. Chu Da, his face as heavy as a stone, silently helped her leave, before leaving, he turned his head to look at me once. That look was so complicated that it was impossible to name it - there was anger, there was helplessness, there was something a bit like begging... but in the end he still didn't say a word. The other man was detained by the police to further verify his identity and itinerary that night. Obviously he was a bit uneasy, but still tried to act calm, saying that he was only "kind enough to go with you to reconcile". The police gave a very light reminder, but enough causing his face to change.
"The camera image in the apartment complex where the incident occurred shows someone very similar to you appearing, you need to coordinate the explanation."
His face immediately turned pale, his eyes unconsciously glanced towards me and then quickly avoided, as if afraid of being seen through something. When I walked out of the police station, it was already dimly lit. The morning wind brought cold moisture, blowing across my skin, causing my tense mind to tremble slightly, as if being pulled back to reality. Tham Du looked at his watch, then looked at me.
"Go back to the hotel and rest for a few hours. We'll go to the prosecutor's office tomorrow morning."
She paused, her voice lowered.
"While I was waiting for you, I received another call, the news is almost confirmed, they are campaigning to have Chu Tinh's case returned due to 'unknown details'."
“What if it gets returned?” I pulled my jacket tight.
“The name is to supplement the investigation, but if the investigation direction is misguided, or important evidence is overlooked…”
“The case may drag on, then gradually sink.”
Tham Du's voice is not loud, but every word is as clear as tapping on the bone.
“They think you're just an ordinary office worker who can't stand a long fight and will give up on your own.”
I laughed softly, without much emotion.
“Then let them try and see how long I can last.”
Tham Du looked at me, his eyes softened a bit, as if he had more recognition.
