Chapter 29
Chapter 29 — The White Coat Oath
Two weeks after the wedding, Yen and Khoa took advantage of their rare days off to enjoy a short honeymoon in her hometown, where many important memories were kept in their love journey. This was also a surprise gift that Khoa had silently prepared, wanting to return with his wife to the place where the most sincere feelings between the two of them originated.
"I think, there is no more meaningful place to start our married life than the place where you trusted me to share your deepest memories of your father," Khoa said as the two walked on the familiar sand, hand in hand, watching the sunset dye the sky orange.
"Thank you, for always understanding what means the most to me," Yen replied, leaning her head on her husband's shoulder, her heart filled with complete happiness. "I think this is the perfect way to close a chapter of memories and at the same time open a new, brighter chapter."
The days at sea passed peacefully, completely away from the pressure of daily busy work. The two spend time enjoying simple moments together — cooking simple meals together, walking along the beach every morning, or simply sitting quietly watching the sunset without saying a word.
One afternoon, Yen took Khoa to visit her mother, who remained in the countryside after the wedding to rest for a few days before returning to the city to live with her daughter at the sincere invitation from both husband and wife. Yen's mother welcomed her new son-in-law with a bright smile and prepared a cozy family meal.
"Thank you for bringing Yen back here," she said to Khoa while the whole family ate together. "I know, this place holds many sad memories for her, but I also believe, now it will bring new happy memories, thanks to having you by my side."
"I hope so too, Mom," Khoa replied, his voice full of sincerity. "I want Yen to know that no matter how sad the past is, the future ahead is always full of hope and happiness."
After the meal, Yen suggested that the whole family visit her father's grave together, bringing with her a familiar bouquet of white chrysanthemums. Standing in front of the grave, Yen introduced Khoa to his father again, this time as the family's official son-in-law.
"Dad, I'm officially married to Khoa," she whispered, her voice filled with emotion. "I believe, Dad will be very happy to see me happy like this, and I promise to always live to the fullest, continuing to pursue the values that Dad has passed on to me."
Khoa stood next to him, bowing his head before the grave with sincere respect. "I promise you, I will always love, cherish and take care of Yen to the best of my ability, so that you can rest assured in your home."
The sea breeze blew gently, carrying the faint scent of chrysanthemums, like a warm response from afar, making the whole family feel more clearly the peace and completeness in this meaningful moment of reunion.
That evening, after sending her mother home to rest, Yen and Khoa walked together along the coastal road leading to the small fishing wharf, where many of Yen's childhood memories were imprinted. The late moonlight illuminates the sparkling sea surface, creating a rare romantic scene amidst the peaceful space of the small fishing village.
"You know," Yen said, stopping in front of the old fishing wharf, her eyes looking far away at the boats anchored silently in the night. "When I was a child, I often dreamed that one day I would be able to leave this place, find another life, away from the painful memories associated with the sea."
"But now, I choose to return here on my own honeymoon," Khoa commented, squeezing his wife's hand affectionately.
"That's right," Yen nodded, smiling understandingly to herself. "I realized, it's not the place that makes memories painful, but the way we choose to face them. Thanks to you, I've learned how to turn places once associated with loss into places filled with new happy memories."
Khoa held her in his arms, the two of them silently admiring the moonlight reflecting on the sea surface, fully enjoying the rare peace amid the busy everyday days. "I'm proud of the journey you've been on," he whispered. "From a girl with pain that was hard to put into words, she has become a strong woman who knows how to transform pain into motivation to help many others."
On the last day of the vacation, before returning to the city, the two visited the district hospital where Yen held her first training session. Doctor Son, upon hearing that the couple was on their honeymoon nearby, enthusiastically invited them to visit. He could not hide his joy at welcoming two people he had always considered role models in his career.
"I heard you just got married, I'm really happy for you," Dr. Son said, his eyes filled with sincerity as he led them both to tour the latest improvements at the Emergency Department, a direct result of the support program that Yen had worked hard to build. "The medical error rate here has decreased significantly, and the team's morale has also improved significantly."
"I'm very happy to see that what I shared has truly created positive change," Yen replied, unable to hide her pride when witnessing the specific results of the program right at the place that inspired her.
On the way back to the city, sitting on the bus, Yen leaned her head on Khoa's shoulder, her heart filled with a rare feeling of peace and contentment. "I think this is the most meaningful honeymoon I can imagine," she said, smiling happily. "Not only can I rest with you, but I can also witness firsthand the results of my own efforts."
"And I believe, this is just the beginning of many other meaningful things that we will continue to create together in the future," Khoa replied, gently kissing the top of his wife's head, his eyes filled with hope as he thought about the road ahead that they would both walk on together, hand in hand, with all the love and common ideals they had pledged to stick together.
Returning to the city, the small room that Associate Professor Truong, which has thoughtfully prepared specifically for Yen, has now become a familiar working space for both husband and wife every night after work. Yen continued to spend time developing the patient safety program, while the department also began drafting new endoscopic technique teaching materials for resident doctors.
"I think we should combine these two areas together," Yen suggested one evening when they both sat together to work. "Both providing professional technical training and integrating patient safety principles right from the first lessons, so that the younger generation of doctors can clearly understand that these two factors always need to go hand in hand."
"Great idea," Khoa replied, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "We can build an integrated training program that not only teaches techniques but also teaches safety thinking and professional ethics right from the first steps."
The two spent the entire evening drafting initial ideas for the new program. The working atmosphere was filled with chemistry and harmony as if they were born to complement each other in all aspects of life, from professional work to private married life.
That weekend, a group of close friends - Nghia, Minh Thu and a few other colleagues - organized a small gathering to welcome the newlyweds back from their honeymoon. The atmosphere was warm and intimate like a big family that had gone through many ups and downs together.
"You guys look so happy," Minh Thu commented, looking at Yen with eyes sparkling with joy. "I'm really happy for you, after everything you've been through."
"Thank you, everyone, for always being by my side and supporting me throughout this whole journey," Yen replied, her eyes looking around at familiar faces, her heart filled with gratitude for the strong friendship and camaraderie that had accompanied her from the first days of her awkward steps into the medical profession.
Nghia stood up, raised his glass, and asked the group to congratulate him again, his voice full of generosity. "Wish Yen and Khoa a happy and fulfilling married life, and may we all continue to write many other meaningful stories together in our medical careers." The whole group clinked glasses together, bustling laughter and chatter echoed in the cozy space, closing a meaningful evening, marking the official start of a completely new chapter, more complete and happier than ever, in the lives of the couple who had just entered married life.
