Chapter 30 — The White Coat Oath

Updated 06/09/2026 6 min read

Five years later, since that happy wedding day, Hong Phuc Central General Hospital has become one of the pioneering medical facilities in patient safety in the country, with a program to reform the on-call regime and lower-line support system that has been replicated throughout twelve provinces. Yen, now as Head of the Patient Safety Department, stood on the podium to speak at a national medical conference, sharing the journey of building a program that has changed the face of an entire system.

"Everything started with a controversial shift, and a heartbreaking medical mistake," Yen began her speech, looking across the hall filled with medical experts from across the country. "But from those difficult moments, we learned that transparency, integrity and teamwork are the strongest foundation to build a safe, humane health system."

Khoa, now the Head of the Department of General Surgery, sat in the front row, his eyes full of pride following his wife's every word. Next to him, his five-year-old son named Minh Duc sat obediently, occasionally looking up to ask his father about the chart images being shown on the big screen.

"What are you talking about, Dad?" the boy whispered, his big eyes full of curiosity.

"I'm telling the story that helped save many people's lives, son," Khoa replied, stroking his son's head affectionately. "One day, when you're older, I'll tell you the whole story."

During the question and answer session after the speech, a young doctor from a remote provincial hospital stood up, his voice full of hope. "Mrs. Yen, my hospital still has very limited resources. Is this model really feasible for places like us?"

Yen smiled, her eyes full of understanding at the familiar question that she had heard many times during the journey of building the program. "I believe it is completely possible, just start with the smallest changes suitable to actual conditions. I still clearly remember the first training session at a small district hospital, where everyone was as skeptical as I am now. But now, that hospital has become one of the leading units in patient safety in the whole province."

The whole hall applauded at that inspiring answer. A representative of the Ministry of Health, sitting in a row of honor, stood up to speak, announcing the decision to include Yen's model in the national patient safety training framework program, officially applied to all hospitals across the country in the next three years.

That news caused the entire hall to explode in prolonged applause. Many former colleagues from all hospitals participating in the program over the years came to congratulate, unable to hide their collective pride at this historic milestone. Doctor Son, now the Deputy Director of the old district hospital, was also present and emotionally hugged the person who had inspired his entire career.

"I can't believe it, from a small training session last year, it has now become a policy that applies to the whole country," he said, his voice choked with emotion. "Thank you, sister, for never giving up believing in changes that seem small but have such great impact."

After the speech, Yen stepped down from the podium, receiving warm applause from the entire hall. Associate Professor Truong, now retired but still regularly invited to be an honorary advisor for medical training programs, approached and hugged his proud daughter-in-law.

“You have done something that not many people can do,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. "You turned a personal tragedy into a driving force for systemic change, saving countless lives across this country."

Dr. Phat, who has now become the head of the national patient safety training program, was also present at the conference and could not hide his pride when witnessing his students achieve such great achievements. "I am always proud to be a part of my two children's story," he said when meeting Yen and Khoa again on the sidelines of the conference. "From the most serious mistake of my life, ultimately led to better things beyond what I dared to hope for."

That evening, the whole family — Yen, Khoa, their son Minh Duc, along with Yen's mother and Associate Professor Truong — gathered together for a cozy reunion meal at the house that the two had built together over the past five years. Minh Thu and Nghia, now married, stopped by to celebrate, bringing their two small children, making the house even more bustling with laughter.

"I still can't believe it, we have come such a long way," Nghia said, toasting the group, his eyes full of nostalgia as he looked back at the years of residency that were full of hardships but also full of beautiful memories.

"And I believe, this is just a chapter in a long story that we will continue to write," Khoa replied, squeezing his wife's hand under the dining table, eyes filled with love as he looked at her and her young son who were passionately listening to their grandmother tell stories.

In the middle of the party, Minh Thu pulled Yen to a private corner, her eyes full of nostalgia. "Do you remember the day I saw the engagement ring on your finger and screamed in the middle of the nursing room?" she smiled, her voice full of warmth. "It feels like just yesterday, but now we have our own families, children, and a solid career."

"Time passes so quickly," Yen replied, smiling emotionally. "But I'm always grateful because you guys accompanied me throughout the whole journey. Without you guys, I certainly wouldn't have been able to overcome so many challenges."

Nghia, overhearing the conversation, also contributed, holding the sleeping baby in his arms. "I still vividly remember the night we stayed up all night analyzing data for the first reform project. At that time, we simply thought we wanted to help our best friend, but who would have thought it would create such a big change for the entire medical industry."

"That is the miracle of friendship and consensus," Associate Professor Truong contributed from the head of the table, his warm eyes looking around at the group of young people who had grown up together over the years. "When good people join hands for a noble cause, there is no limit that cannot be overcome."

The whole group raised their glasses and clinked glasses in warm laughter, fully enjoying the rare moment of reunion between friends and colleagues who had gone through many ups and downs together to reach the success and happiness they have today.

After dinner, when night fell, Yen led Khoa and Minh Duc to the small balcony, where they often sat and watched the stars every weekend night. She told her son about her grandfather, about the beautiful and sad memories that shaped the person she is today, about the long journey full of challenges but also filled with hope that she and her father went through together.

"Grandpa will definitely be very proud of mom and you, son," Yen whispered, hugging the boy tightly in her arms, her voice gentle but still filled with deep emotion, her eyes looking up at the sparkling starry sky.

"I will also become a doctor like mom and dad," Minh Duc said, his voice filled with the innocent determination of a five-year-old child, his eyes shining with excitement as he imagined his own future. "I want to help people like mom and dad, I want to wear a white blouse like mom."

Khoa hugged both his wife and child in his arms, squeezing them tighter in his warm arms, a happy smile shining on his face as he looked at the starry night sky. "No matter what path you choose when you grow up, your parents will always be proud and support you wholeheartedly. But if you really choose a medical career, remember to always uphold the oath we took - the oath of the white blouse, vowing to devote your whole life to the lives and happiness of others."

Three people stood there, under the starry night sky, hugging each other in complete happiness, closing a long journey full of challenges but also filled with love, and at the same time opening a new chapter full of hope for the next generation - a chapter continued by the white coat oath that united the whole family, and will continue to be passed on to many future generations, like a never-ending flame of compassion and integrity in the medical profession, lighting the path forward for all—even those who carry that noble oath in their hearts.
