Chapter 17 — Appointment Under the Stars

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

The fateful Friday morning arrived in a tense atmosphere that enveloped the entire club. Nhat Quang, Ngoc Han, and Thanh Ha were chosen as representatives to present directly to the board of directors, while the remaining members waited nervously outside the meeting room.

The board of directors meeting room had a solemn look that made Ngoc Han nervous when entering, no matter how carefully she told herself to prepare. The vice principal, a middle-aged woman with strict eyes, sat in the center, next to two parent representatives who had previously submitted feedback.

"I have reviewed the proposal you sent in advance," the vice principal began, his voice calm but no less sharp. "I appreciate the detailed preparation, but I still have some concerns that need to be answered more clearly."

"We're ready to answer any questions," Nhat Quang replied, his voice confident even though his hand on the table was slightly clenched, the only sign of the tension rising in his heart.

The presentation started with Nhat Quang giving an overview of the purpose and meaning of the event, followed by Thanh Ha presenting details about the communication plan and controlling the number of guests through the pre-registration system. When it came to her part, Ngoc Han stood up, took a deep breath to calm herself, and then began presenting the detailed safety plan that the group had worked hard to build over the past three days.

"As you can see in this diagram," she said, pointing to the detailed drawing projected on the screen, "we have calculated the maximum capacity based on current fire prevention standards, and arranged three separate emergency exits, each with a supervisor on duty throughout the event."

One of the parents, a stern-looking man, interrupted. "But you are still just students, how can you be sure to handle an emergency situation if an incident really occurs? This is not a joke, the safety of hundreds of people is on the line."

That sharp question made the atmosphere in the room slacken a beat. Ngoc Han felt her heart beat faster, but she still tried to keep her voice calm when responding.

"You're absolutely right," she admitted, not shying away from the difficult question. "That's why we invited a professional security unit to coordinate supervision throughout the event, not just relying on the students. In addition, we also invited the local rescue team to be on standby, along with the presence of teachers and parent representatives throughout the event."

Nhat Quang continued, adding more details about the contract signed with the security unit, along with the rooftop structure inspection certificate issued by the construction engineer just two days ago. Each answer was clear and had a specific basis, gradually making the atmosphere of doubt in the meeting room less tense.

"What about the issue of the number of guests exceeding the original estimate?" The vice principal continued to ask, his eyes still searching. "I saw that the initial number of registered students was one hundred and fifty people, but through the media, it seems that the number of interested students has far exceeded that number."

"We have adjusted the plan, limiting the maximum number of tickets to three hundred people, based on the actual safe capacity of the area," Thanh Ha replied, giving a detailed statistics table. "We have also set up an online pre-registration system, strictly controlled the number, and also have a backup plan to transfer part of the program to the school yard if the number of registrations exceeds the allowed threshold."

The presentation lasted nearly an hour, with a series of difficult questions continuously asked from both the school board and parent representatives. There were times when Ngoc Han felt like all three of them were being cornered by increasingly complicated hypothetical situations, but thanks to careful preparation over the past three days, they all found convincing answers to each problem raised.

Finally, after a long silence for the school board to discuss privately, the vice principal returned, his eyes softening somewhat compared to the beginning of the meeting.

"I have to admit, you guys prepared much more professionally and thoughtfully than I expected," she said, her voice calm. "The school board decided to approve the event to continue to take place on an adjusted scale, with the condition that students must strictly comply with all safety plans presented, and submit progress updates twice a week until the event date."

Hearing that, Ngoc Han felt like her whole body had just let go of a huge burden that had been suppressed for the past few days. She glanced at Nhat Quang and saw that he was also breathing a sigh of relief, his eyes sparkling with joy that was hard to hide.

"We promise to fully comply with all requests," Nhat Quang replied, his voice full of gratitude and excitement. "Thank you and parents for giving us the opportunity to prove it."

Stepping out of the meeting room, all three people almost hugged each other in the middle of the hallway, unable to hide their burst of joy after many days of extreme tension. The remaining members, who were waiting nervously outside, rushed around as soon as they saw the bright smiles on the group's faces.

"We did it!" Thanh Ha shouted excitedly, causing the entire hallway to ring with cheers of celebration from all club members.

Ngoc Han stood in the middle of that joyful crowd, feeling a genuine, indescribable happiness spreading throughout her body. She looked at Nhat Quang and saw that his eyes were also looking at her. The two exchanged a meaningful smile, like a wordless affirmation that all the efforts and sacrifices over the past months had not been in vain.

That afternoon, to celebrate, the whole group went to a small cafe in front of the school gate and ordered a series of milk tea and cakes to treat each other after a series of stressful days. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and talk, each person took a turn recounting the most thrilling moment in this morning's presentation, from the vice principal's stern eyes to the parent's difficult question that almost made all three of them confused.

"When he asked about handling emergency situations, I saw Ngoc Han's hand shaking on the file," Thanh Ha teased, making the whole table laugh.

"You're no calmer than me," Ngoc Han replied, smiling, a feeling of relief and closeness spreading between friends who had gone through a challenging journey together.

"Anyway," Nhat Quang said, raising his glass of milk tea as a congratulation, "we have proven that, with enough determination and careful preparation, there is no obstacle that cannot be overcome. Cheers, for our Astronomy Club!"

The whole group raised their glasses together, the sound of clinking glasses mixed with bustling laughter, temporarily dispelling all the fatigue and stress that had accumulated over the past days. Ngoc Han looked around the table, looking at the radiant faces of the friends who had accompanied her over the past few months, feeling a deep sense of familiarity and appreciation that she never thought she could find when she first reluctantly stepped into this club.

In the afternoon, when she returned home, she told her mother the whole story with unconcealed excitement. Ms. Lan listened attentively, occasionally nodding in appreciation at the clever details in how the group handled the situation.

"I'm proud of you," Ms. Lan said, her eyes shining with sincere joy. "Not only because you helped save the event, but also because of the way you handled pressure so maturely. That's what I want most from you, more than grades or achievements."

Those words made Ngoc Han feel extremely warm, as a confirmation that, although the road ahead still has many challenges, she is not alone in her journey of balancing passion and responsibility.

But right in the middle of that joy, Ngoc Han suddenly remembered that she still had an important promise to fulfill - to return seriously to exam preparation as committed to her mother. She pulled out her phone and immediately texted her mother the good news, silently telling herself that from tomorrow, she would have to find the balance that had been temporarily put aside during the past three days of fighting, before other pressures, still silently waiting ahead, could come.

Late that night, before going to bed, she received a text message from Nhat Quang, just a short line but enough to warm her heart: "Thank you for always being there, in all the most difficult moments. Good night, my little star." She smiled and read and reread that message a few times before putting the phone aside, falling asleep in the most peaceful sleep of the past week, unaware that in just a few days, another storm, much quieter and more unexpected, was waiting to test the very relationship she cherished the most.
