Chapter 27
Chapter 27 — Appointment Under the Stars
On the next evening's news, as promised, the local television station broadcast a short report about the meteor shower observation event of the Astronomy Club of Binh Minh High School. Ngoc Han's whole family gathered in front of the TV, anxiously waiting for the report to appear.
When the image of Ngoc Han standing on stage, her emotional voice telling about her journey appeared on the screen, Ms. Lan could not hold back her tears, holding her daughter's hand tightly. “You speak so well,” she whispered, her voice filled with pride.
The reportage ended with a shot of the entire rooftop area sparkling with lights, hundreds of spectators looking up at the starry sky, and the host's comment: "A beautiful proof that when youth dare to dream and persevere in pursuing their passion, they can create miracles, not only for themselves, but also for the surrounding community."
The next morning, when Ngoc Han arrived at school, she noticed a clear change in the way people viewed the club. Many students, including those who had never been interested in astronomy before, were chatting about last night's report. Many expressed their desire to join the club as soon as the new school year begins.
"You're famous," Yen Nhi teased when she met Ngoc Han in the hallway, giggling. "This morning I heard all the girls in the class next door talking about 'the girl who told shooting stars' on TV."
Ngoc Han blushed, a little embarrassed by that unexpected attention, but inside she couldn't help but feel a small joy knowing that her story had truly touched the hearts of many people.
The club meeting that afternoon was filled with excitement. Mr. Dat announced great news - thanks to the attention from the television report, a local technology company contacted him, offering to sponsor the purchase of more modern observation equipment for the club in the next school year, while also pledging to support long-term operations.
"This is exactly what we have been hoping for so many months," Mr. Dat said, his voice unable to hide his joy. "The club now not only escapes the risk of dissolution, but also has the opportunity to grow stronger in the future."
The entire living room echoed with applause and cheers of joy. Nhat Quang stood up, his eyes emotionally looking around at the faces that had accompanied him throughout a long and challenging journey.
"I want to thank everyone," he said, his voice choked up. "Without the efforts and perseverance of each member, we would not be able to get today. Especially," he turned to look at Ngoc Han, his eyes filled with appreciation, "I want to thank the person who taught the whole club to understand that, sometimes, the most truthful stories are the strongest connections between people."
Ngoc Han smiled, feeling her cheeks heat up at that public praise, but her heart was filled with an indescribable happiness at being part of this meaningful group.
That evening, when Ngoc Han returned home, she received another unexpected call — not from her father, but from an unfamiliar phone number. It turned out that it was a representative of a prestigious university specializing in natural sciences, announcing that they had seen the report and were impressed with her story and organizational capacity, inviting her to participate in a scholarship program for students with excellent extracurricular achievements.
That news made Ngoc Han stunned for a moment, not daring to believe what she had just heard. She quickly called to share with Nhat Quang, her voice still shaking with excitement.
"I really didn't expect things to turn out this way," she said, still sounding surprised. "From an event that seemed to only help save the club, now it has opened up so many opportunities that I never dared to dream of."
"You deserve all of that," Nhat Quang replied, his voice full of pride and warmth. "It is the result of tireless efforts, of the courage to face your own fears. I believe, this is just the beginning of even greater things waiting for you ahead."
That weekend, Ngoc Han's whole family organized a small party to celebrate, with both Yen Nhi and Nhat Quang invited to attend. Ms. Lan prepared many of her daughter's favorite dishes, and the atmosphere in the house was filled with bustling laughter and chatter that is rarely seen.
"I have to be honest, at first I was worried when she asked for permission to return to support the club full-time in the middle of exams," Ms. Lan said to Nhat Quang while setting the table, her voice both joking and serious. "But looking back now, I'm glad I trusted her to make her own decisions."
"Ngoc Han always knows how to balance everything in her own way," Nhat Quang replied, smiling and looking at her who was busy helping set the table. "I'm just lucky to be able to accompany her throughout this journey."
The meal was cozy, full of laughter, funny stories about the backstage of the event were told over and over again, each time there were new details that made the whole table laugh. Yen Nhi recounted how she almost dropped the entire tray of snacks when she tried to squeeze into the crowd to take the most beautiful photo of the meteor moment, making everyone laugh out loud.
At the end of the meal, Ms. Lan raised her glass of orange juice, her eyes looking around the table filled with emotion. "I want to thank all of you, the friends who have always been by my side and helped my daughter throughout her journey," she said, her voice choked up. "Watching her grow up, confident and happy like she is now, that is the most precious thing a mother can wish for."
Ngoc Han looked around the dining table, looked at each dear face laughing and chattering, feeling a complete happiness that is rarely found, knowing that, although the journey ahead still has many unknowns, she will never have to walk alone again.
The following week, the club held a special meeting to welcome more than thirty new members who signed up after the event, a number that far exceeded all initial expectations. Teacher Dat proposed establishing a small group dedicated to guiding new members, and did not hesitate to nominate Ngoc Han and Nhat Quang as the main people in charge, recognizing the outstanding contributions of both over the past time.
"We will need to redraft the entire basic introduction to astronomy, suitable for beginners," Nhat Quang said during the meeting, his eyes filled with enthusiasm as he looked around at the young, eager faces of the new members. “This is our opportunity to build a stronger foundation for the club in the years to come, ensuring this spirit is carried forward even after our generation graduates.”
Ngoc Han nodded in agreement, a new but meaningful feeling of responsibility arose in her heart. She realized that the club is now not only where she finds herself, but also where she can contribute to passing on that fire of passion to the next generation of juniors, a meaningful cycle that she never thought she would have the opportunity to participate in, since the first day she reluctantly stepped into this living room.
Among the new members, there was a tenth grade girl named Bao Ngoc. She appeared especially timid during the first meeting, sitting in the corner of the room, not daring to talk to anyone. Ngoc Han, recognizing the familiar image of herself in that appearance, proactively came to sit next to her and gently started a conversation.
"How do you feel about the first meeting?" Ngoc Han asked, her voice warm, trying to create the most comfortable feeling possible.
"I... I'm a little worried that I won't be able to keep up with everyone," Bao Ngoc admitted, her voice soft. "Everyone here is so good and so confident."
"I also thought the same thing when I first joined the club," Ngoc Han smiled, briefly recounting her own initial days of confusion. "But you know, the most important thing is not to be good from the beginning, but to dare to take the first steps, no matter how scared you are. I believe, as long as you persevere, you will soon find your own place here."
Bao Ngoc smiled, her eyes were less worried, and nodded in thanks for that sincere encouragement. Looking at that scene, Nhat Quang stood from afar and observed, unable to help but smile warmly at the image of Ngoc Han gradually becoming an inspirational leader for the junior generation, just like the way he had led her in the early days of confusion.
