Chapter 29
Chapter 29 — Appointment Under the Stars
Graduation day has finally arrived, bringing with it a complex mix of emotions between joy, nostalgia, and even a bit of sadness at having to say goodbye to those memorable student years. The schoolyard was brightly decorated with flags, flowers and congratulatory banners, and bustling music echoed throughout the campus from early morning.
Ngoc Han stood in front of the mirror in her room, adjusting her traditional blue bachelor's gown, her heart pounding with excitement and excitement. Ms. Lan stood next to her, helping her daughter adjust her graduation cap, her eyes unable to hide her emotions.
"I can't believe you've grown up so fast," Ms. Lan said, her voice choked, her hand gently caressing her daughter's shirt. "Just a few days ago I was a shy girl, now I'm about to enter a completely new chapter of my life."
At that moment, the doorbell rang. Ngoc Han and Ms. Lan looked at each other and hurriedly ran to open the door. Standing there, in a rarely seen neat suit, carrying a small suitcase, was her father - the man she had been waiting for many years.
"Three!" Ngoc Han screamed, unable to control her emotions, rushed to hug him, tears flowing uncontrollably.
"Daddy's here," her father said, his voice equally choked, hugging his daughter tightly as if to make up for all the hugs he'd missed over the years. "Dad came home in time, just as promised."
The whole family stood hugging each other in the middle of the door frame, letting happy tears flow freely, no need to suppress or hide anything anymore. This is the moment that Ngoc Han has been waiting for a long time, a moment that she had almost given up hope of ever reaching.
The graduation ceremony took place solemnly in the school's large hall, with the full attendance of twelfth grade students, parents, and all teachers. When Ngoc Han's name was announced to receive her diploma, she stepped onto the stage amid bustling applause, her eyes immediately looking to the row of chairs where her father, mother, and Nhat Quang were sitting, all of whom were looking at her with proud eyes.
After the ceremony, the whole family took souvenir photos together in front of the school gate, where the familiar "Binh Minh High School" sign still stands as tall as it has for many years. Her father, for the first time in many years, appeared in the full family frame of three members, something that previously seemed to only exist in distant dreams.
"I want to see where the meteor shower event you told me about took place," her father said as the family strolled around campus after the ceremony. "I'm curious to know where helped you rediscover your love for the night sky."
Ngoc Han led her father to the familiar rooftop, which had now returned to its usual quietness, no longer sparkling lights or bustling crowds like the event night, but still retaining the special atmosphere that she had loved all year long.
"This is where I stood, telling my story in front of hundreds of people," she said, pointing toward the area where the makeshift stage once stood. "And here," she pointed to the main telescope still fixed in the corner of the terrace, "is where you and Nhat Quang used to spend many evenings together observing the sky."
Her father quietly looked around that space, his eyes full of emotion. "I'm sorry for not being there to witness the journey you went through," he said, his voice low and filled with remorse. "But I'm glad you found this place, found people who can accompany you when I can't."
"I don't blame you anymore," Ngoc Han replied, holding her father's hand, her voice sincere. "I have learned to accept that love is not always perfect, and the most important thing is that Dad tried, was here, right now, with me."
The father and son stood quietly together on the terrace, watching the afternoon sky gradually change color, a simple but profound moment of healing, closing a long chapter full of hurt to open a new chapter, where both of them can rebuild the trust and family affection that has been eroded by time and distance.
That evening, Ngoc Han's family held a small party at home to celebrate, inviting Nhat Quang, Mr. Sau, and a few closest friends to attend. This was the first time her father met Nhat Quang face to face, and the atmosphere was initially a bit tense when the two most important men in Ngoc Han's life faced each other for the first time.
"I've heard Ngoc Han talk a lot about you," Nhat Quang said first, his voice polite but no less confident. "I'm very happy that you were able to return on this important occasion for her."
Ba Ngoc Han looked at him for a moment, his eyes filled with the stern look of a father, before smiling and shaking his hand tightly. "I heard my daughter talk about you a lot," he said. "About how you patiently helped her overcome so many difficulties. I truly thank you for that."
The atmosphere gradually became more comfortable as the whole party talked together, sharing funny stories about the journey of building the club, the memorable event night, and the future plans of the two young people about to enter university. Mr. Sau, with his witty stories about seafaring life, also contributed significantly to making the atmosphere more lively and cozy.
At the end of the party, when everyone had left, Ngoc Han's father pulled her out to the small balcony, where a few stars could be seen peeking through the city lights. "He's a good guy," he said, his voice sincere. "I believe you have chosen the right person to accompany you on the journey ahead."
"I think so too," Ngoc Han replied, smiling happily, resting her head on her father's shoulder in that rare moment of peace, feeling the completeness that she had been waiting for so many long years.
"I've already talked to the company," her father added, his voice serious but determined. "I would like to transfer to a management position at the mainland office, although the salary may be a little lower than working on the rig. I want to be closer to you and mom more, especially when you are about to enter a new phase of life."
Ngoc Han looked up at her father, unable to hide her surprise and emotion at that big decision. "Are you sure you want to do that? I know offshore work is very important to you."
"Nothing is more important than family," her father replied, his voice firm. "It took me too many years to realize that. Now I want to make up for it. Even though it may never be enough to completely fill what I lost, I will try my best from now on."
Those words made Ngoc Han's heart so warm that it was difficult to express in words. She hugged her father, clearly feeling that, although the healing journey between father and son still needed more time and a lot of effort from both sides, the first steps, sincere and specific like these, were enough for her to believe in a brighter future waiting ahead, for her whole small family.
Ms. Lan, standing in the balcony door frame, quietly observed that moment, her eyes also filled with tears. When Ngoc Han's father went back into the house to get more drinks, she came out and stood next to her daughter, gently holding her hand.
"I'm glad that our family has finally found completeness in its own way," Ms. Lan said, her voice gentle. "It's not a flawless perfection, but a sincerity, knowing how to admit mistakes and trying to fix them together."
"I think that's the most meaningful thing," Ngoc Han replied, leaning her head on her mother's shoulder. "I've learned that family doesn't have to be perfect to be appreciated, everyone just needs to be willing to try for each other."
That night, after everyone had left, Ngoc Han stood alone on the balcony, looking up at the night sky sparkling with the first stars, gently touching the shooting star bracelet given by Nhat Quang. She smiled, feeling an unprecedented peace, knowing that, although the road ahead still had many new things and challenges awaiting, she had enough strength, enough love around her, to confidently move on to the next chapter of her life.
Her phone vibrated slightly, a text message from Nhat Quang. "Thank you for such a beautiful day today," he wrote. "I'm glad to be a part of this special moment for your family." She smiled, quickly typed a response before putting down the phone, her heart filled with deep gratitude for all the people who had accompanied her along the way, from family, friends, to even a small club that had completely changed her life in a way she had never dared to dream of.
